Andertons in Australia?

I'm trying to establish if (according to family lore) my g-grandfather Thomas Anderton did actually emigrate to Australia.

I expect that her would have left shortly after WW1 (somewhere between 1918 and 1922 most likely) but can find no record on any of the "ancestors onboard" or similar.

Thomas was born in Manchester in 1874 and served in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps during WW1.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone who can help trace Thomas.

Thanks

Debra

Benjamin Anderton, b. 1804, Mathews Co., VA

I queried Benjamin several years ago and thought I'd try again now that more people are doing research. There is another Benjamin Anderton in the Kingston Parish register (Gloucester county -- from which Mathews Co. was formed) b. in 1773 born to William Anderton and Jane. I am wondering if this Benjamin was my Benjamin's father.

There are Anderton's in Mathews County, VA and another set in Gloucester County (adjacent) -- I have never been able to connect these two sets of Andertons.

The Andertons in my tree date back to early 1800's. There seem to be quite a few of them around Bingley area and as far as I know, this isn't all that far from Anderton, Lancs which may be the origin of the name. However, I've made contact with several people with common Anderton ancestors so hopefully I should be able to find out more.
Thanks for the reply
Rgds
Jacki Blackburn

Mike, congratulations on the Viking ancestry. It seems I'm descended from Andertons who lived around Eldwick, nr Bingley, West Yorkshire. By the way, they don't seem to be the same family as from Kildwick (if you've encountered them). Have you any idea if the Yorkshire Andertons might be connected to the Lancashire Andertons?
Look forward to hearing from you
Rgds
Jacki Blackburn

Dear Gary,
I am researching my Hart family in Blackrod. They have a lodger living with them named Joseph Anderton. He is with James Hart in 1841 (Westleigh) and then with James' son William Hart in 1851 census (Ince, St. Catherine's parish). Joseph Anderton was baptised 11 Apr 1828 (chapelry of Blackrod). His mother Alice Anderton was a spinster, no father listed, she was buried on 11 April 1828 (age 28 yrs). I am trying to find the connection between the Andertons and the Harts. Why was Joseph living with the Harts? Perhaps Alice is the sister of Catherine who married James Hart around 1818. I don't know the maiden name for my Catherine who married James Hart. I believe she died around 1841 (she is not with the family in the 1841 census), I have sent for a death certificate for her but have not received it yet. Have you come across any information about these people in your research? I found one baptism record for a Catherine daughter of Christephor & Catherine Anderton 19 Aug 1792 in Walton on the Hill (West Derby Chapel). Is that in an area close to Blackrod? Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.
Janet HART Simmons

Sam
My apologies; in my enthusiasm got mixed up!
As to your Anderton family tree, I would be very interested indeed. I have been researching the Andertons of Lostock Hall now for over twenty years and have a pedigree going back to AD 1153. William de Brindle/Burnhill (born c1215) of Ashton in Makerfield, Lancs took the local name Anderton, becoming the progenitor of the Anderton family.

I can find no marriage for the Band Leader, however, the latter maybe of some help;
[Wallace] Hartley, a violinist, worked on the Cunard Liner Mauretania before leaving to become bandmaster on the Titanic. He had a fiancé in Boston Spa, near Wetherby in Yorkshire and spent time with her in that village the week before boarding the Titanic.
http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/biography/442/

Tony
Sam
Not only is there something weird going on in your ancestors, in so much as the relationships in the 1901 Census is [or seems to be]incorrect, but also (and I hate to be the one to tell you this) the Band Leader on the Titanic was not Hartley Cowgill, but Wallace H Hartley of Colne.

Tony
Can you tell me why they only let you see the 1881 uk census and non of the others?

Is that the correct spelling of Alice's last name? as it is different from that used in William's name.

Thank you again for the quick reply.

Anthony my eyes are starting to twinkle. My Great grandfather was Hartley Cowgill Anderton born Oct 25th 1897 to Peter Anderton(c1874) and Annice(Annise)Dawes.(c1876) (Some of my relatives have come up with the name Kershaw associated with the Dawes as in Kershaw-Dawes but I don't know where that came from) Annice had a sister Ethel who married a Mr Hartley(they are Colne natives) Is Alice Dawes and Hartley Cowgill, related to my Ethel and Annice

Peter and Annise had Lily?, William(Billy), Thomas(Tom), Robert(1900), Henry(Harry)(abt1895) And Hartley Cowgill who married Alice Roberts. Alice always said that she didn't like being called Alice Anderton because she new another Alice Anderton who left her children and people always thought it was her. (Alice owned and ran Andertons a little restaurant at the bottom of Holcombe Hill on the old road.)
Samantha Harris

Hi Tony, I just tried to post and it lost the page. Lost the post too and long winded it was. so to repeat myself in short...I know Wallace is the Bandmaster. Hartley Cowgill Anderton is my Great grandfather. Two different people. According to my grandmother before she passed on. Said that Annice Dawes had a sister Ethel Dawes who married a Mr. Hartley. First name unknown. I think she is the connection to the Hartley Family which we have been trying to connect. Ethel was suppose to have taken my g-grandpa Hartley on the Titanic with her but he got sick and she missed the boat so to speak.
I have attached a file if it will take. It prints out better than it looks. It is of the Anderton tree. Sorry no dates it is my first working copy with I did to get all the names down from all sources of the family before I started to research. Hope it comes through.
It is not letting me post with an attachment sorry.
Sam

Yes, it would appear that we are 5th cousins since we share the same g-g-g-grandfather in Henry. I found Henry (1804-1874) to be son of James (1775-1854) and Lydia Farrimond (1785-1846). Henry's wife, Mary Simm (1802-1881) was born to Joseph Simm (1764-1839) and Margaret Rigby (1765-1844). In addition to your g-g-grandfather, John (1833-1894) and my g-g-grandfather, James, there appears to be another 6 siblings ... Liddy, Mary, Ann, Peter, Elizabeth and Margaret. Send me an e-mail if I can be of further help.

Ancient ancestors

The Anderton clan originated in Anderton village in Lancashire,England. Then one of our ancestors moved to Euxton and I am from that branch.I was born in Bolton a few miles to the south-east.
I have discovered,as a result of a DNA test, that I belong to a Y-chromosome haplogroup known as I1a or the "Wodan" or "Viking" group.I am told that the first man to bring our chromosome to Britain maybe between 700 and 900AD was, with a high level of probability,a Danish Viking!.This may shed light on our surname's origin being "Eindrithi-tun" (Old Scandinavian) rather than "Eandred-tun"(Anglo-Saxon).Bear in mind also that what is now Lancashire was within the "Danelaw".It seems likely that our ancestor made a daring journey across the North Sea,arriving on the east coast.A later generation then migrated west into what is now Lancashire to find land to settle.Centuries later, here I am!
