I have since found an even earlier ANGE!(the name later evolved through AYNGE to AINGE).

A Richard ANGE is listed in the Guild archives of Stratford on Avon in December 1494. As he would have been adult, this makes it possible that he was the father of unknown Ange b1508 and the probable grandfather of Richard Ange b1531. This early line appears to have been butchers (confirmed by later records), with rented premises in Bridge street, formerley called Borgestrete.

The reference can be found at:
Title Guild of the Holy Cross: Grants and leases

Date 25 December, 1494

P Dated in the hall of the Gild, in the feast of the Nativity of our Lord, 10 Hen.VII

P Endorsed: `Indentura Thome Grene, jun., nunc Roberti Brat, Richarde Ange a tenemente in y⊇ Borgestrete'

RefNo BRT1/2/526
Re: Ange Town and the early ANGES

Hi Stan and other ANGE friends.

I hope this info adds to your's and any other interested person's knowledge of how and where the Anges began.

We spoke on the phone about a year ago re Francis Ange & family, who emigrated to Maryland "soon" (could have been months or a few years as Francis said he was "quite a big boy" then?) after 31st Jan 1650 (Charles 1st beheaded), on the ship Great Bengal. I have been unable to find any trace of this ship or their arrival in Maryland. I think our families are linked this far back, as I can find probable evidence that my ancestor Thomas was a brother of your ancestor John (father of Francis)and their father was called Thomas. Unfortunately, as 1st names were duplicated and parish records incomplete, it is not possible to prove they were from the same family, as other related Ange cousins/siblings lived in the Stratford on Avon area at the time and among them, were 2 Thomas's with families, one a calcearius/shoemaker and the other a maltster/publican. There is still an old thatched pub (now called The Old Thatch) in the centre of Stratford, with its own well in the back yard. This was exceptional for the time and I believe it was Thomas' pub.

The 1st Ange I have found (listed on Ancestry), was unknown Ange b1508 near Stratford. I can find no more info about where he came from or married. It has been considered by many that the name has French protestant Huguenot origins, which have not yet been proven. He was the probable father of Richard, David, George, Humphrey, Walter and John Ange, who were all born in or near Stratford within 15yrs of each other, when no other father Ange was around and he may have been called Francis, as all of the next generation called a son or daughter Francis/Franciscus/Frauncisci (the spelling varies but each is identified as filius/filia in latin). As the burial records are not available, it is not clear which survived childhood and married, some to cousins. Endemic plague and other illnesses led to a high death toll at this time.

The parish register spelling changed from Ange to Aynge about 1600 and to Ainge about 1640-1660 (in some parish records). This was probably due to the priests writing what they heard phonetically and as many people were illiterate and not bothered about spelling or followed the fashion of the day, the surname evolved. All of these Holy Trinity marriaqe and baptism records were transcribed by parish priest Richard Byfield and can be bought on cd.

Have you been able to find any more info and can you trace your tree directly back to Francis? I believe that a generation has been overlooked (fibbed about by Francis?), as I can believe longevity of 100yrs being known in the area at that time but not 137yrs.

I can also find no evidence of the "fine chest' which Richard Ange built for playwright William Shakespeare's impressive new residence 'New Place' (demolished mid 1700's). This is almost certainly true, as Stratford was a small town then, the families had been neighbours for several generations (although there is no marriage link in the family trees) and one family of Anges called a son Shakspear Ange. There was a Richard Ange of middle age at the time, who probably did done much of the fine woodcarving/carpentry work in beautiful Holy Trinity church, where the families worshipped. (The only other place of worship then was a smaller guild chapel but no records exist of any baptisms/marriages/burials (no churchyard either!).

Wendy Clare (doing a one-name study of the ANGE/AYNGE/AINGE surname)

Dear Wendy
My father was an Ainge (Royston), his father was Walter son of Charles Ainge son of William Ainge, all born in the London area. I heard from my father that there was an Ainge French Uncle that came to visit when he was a child and that we were descended from the French Heugenots. I have so far not managed to trace back that far. I get stuck when I get back to William Ainge marrying Jane Scoltock. I would love to be kept informed of your findings, it sounds a mammoth piece of work and very interesting.
Best Wishes
Janet

Dear Wendy
Yes you found the correct Charles on the census. His father was William born between 1827 and 1830 married Mary Stone born Birmingham 1830. Charles was born 1859 - 1929 married Elizabeth Sharp, siblings Elizabeth 1858, Samuel 1867, Alice Eliza 1869, John Henry 1868, Francis 1871, John ainge 1873, Henry 1862, William 1856. I think William 1827-1830 was married to a Mary again but I've had a lot of difficulty finding more info. I'm trying to find that elusive link without success. So any help you can give I would really appreciate.

Kind regards
Janet

I don't have this Ainge on my list, so I'm very interested to hear more about your family. My closest in name/birth is Charles Henry baptised in Bredons Norton, Worcs on 1st Sept 1861 (and he is not listed in the 7th April 1861 census). His parents were Thomas Ainge and Julia Pigeon, with a son William age 9 and two daughters. This Charles died 1949.

I will check my sister's list of about 8,000 Ainges to see if I can find the rest of your Charles' family. It would help me if you can give me any other family members, where they lived and if occupation known. I also have about 25 Ainge trees on Ancestry, trying to match these individuals into groups and follow where they moved to.

An Ancestry search found me a Charles Ainge b1859, living in Bethnall Green, with carpenter father William and mother Mary (jpeg file attached). Although I have 2 apparently unrelated Ainge groups living in the London area, with their extended families, the only child with Charles as a middle name, is already accounted for. Another Charles Ainge b1859 in Stafford, was in St Albans in 1891.

If Ancestry block you viewing the jpeg census record of Charles with family, please send me your email addr and confirm where they were living, so I can find you the right family.

Wendy Clare wendy01162@aol.com

I am in the UK, researching the ANGE/AYNGE/AINGE family, which appears to have started in the (then) small town of Stratford on Avon and trying to find out more about this emigrant family.
I am unable to find any record of their arrival or ship Great Bengal, although it is a likely name for a large ship then, as the English were expanding trade in India about the middle of the 1600s. Parkgate was a busy old shipping port near Birkenhead (Liverpool area), until the estuary silted up. Travelling from this port (considerable distance from Stratford on Avon) may have avoided storms in the bay of Biscay. It has been reported that Francis said he was a big boy (he would have been 20) when Charles I was beheaded (30 Jan 1649) and they left 'soon' after (which may have been a few years to an old man). I can prove my Ainge ancestry back to 18 generations and believe that John was a cousin of my first verified Aynge (the spelling varied due to semi-literate priests, snobbery, fashion, bad head cold (and as most of the people were illiterate, it didn't seem to matter to them). My sister and I have over 200 people of this family living in Stratford on Avon and lots more in the surrounding villages. Not all of them can be matched up in families yet. It is amusing to think that they were acquaintances of the famous William Shakespeare and it is reputed that a Richard Aynge built a 'fine cabinet' for Shakespeare's house at New Place, which may be the exact cabinet still there. Does anyone have a copy of this passage in a book by Thomas Bailey? I would also very much like to see a family tree for these people and their descendants. You are all very welcome to view my Stratford on Avon Aynges (The first Anges/Aynges/Ainges) and AINGE (biggest) family tree on Ancestry. I also have 'mini' Aynge trees for many of the surrounding villages. Wendy

They migrated to West Tn. and died there after 1870. I will be in North Carolina this fall and would like to visit any Ange homesteads, cemetaries, ect. We plan to visit Plymouth and Washington. Any information on early Ange ancestors would be appreciated. Thanks, Sherry

Hey guys. and gals. I'm Bill Hedgepeth. My mother is Marie Hedgepeth the daughter of Thomas Allen Ange who was the son of John Francis Ange who was the son of Elijah Ange who was the son of Gabriel Ange who was the son of Francis Ange listed in the 1790 census of Martin County North Carolina. Been researching the Ange name for almost a year and found some 1700's Ange's located in a part of Delaware that use to be Maryland. A Priscilla Ange bought a tract of land on November 4, 1761 on the south side of what was known as Sow Bridge Branch. A John Ange lived there and owned a mill. On Oct. 6, 1775 John Ange Jr.,Thomas Ange and a Richard Tull entered into a partnership to build a saw and grist mill and a dam where John Ange Sr. lived. Oddly enough this part of Delaware is due exactly east of Sommerset County Maryland where the Francis Ange who lived to be over 100 years old resided. This information can be found at www.accessible.com/amcnty/DE/Delaware/delaware71.hmt. I have also located a John Ange that served as a Captain in the Revolutionary War.

Ange' s sister Lydia md. Guilford Ange, brother Fenner md. ((?) Haddock of Pitt Co.)? His grandparents were Gabriel Ange Sr. (son of Francis Ange Sr. &wf.
Hello, Reita. My name is Stan. I live at home with my parents Dale & Lavaughn Ange, West in Washington Beauf. Co. N.C. (H#252-927-4665). right now I'm using a friend's computer in Durham N.C. I would like to who was Farncis Ange's wf. & decendents in Maryland and how they came to N.C. I don't believe Abiagail was the mother of Francis Ange Sr. of Martin Co., but was maybe his sister-in-law. Abigail and Francis are both listed as heads of households in the 1784-1787 N.C. Cens. & 1790 U.S. both of Martin Co. , & both listed with children under 16. Abigail's husband (?) Ange must have before the 1784-1787 N.C. Cens. & she must have remd. (?) Watson after the 1790 U.S. Cens. He must have died before a 1796 land deed, where Abigail is listed as Abigail Watson with son Elias Ange(who must have been her son and was at least 21). She is listed in Onslow Co. N.C. in 1800 Cens & I believe Elias is listed there as well or a county nearby ( *and maybe the same one in S.C. later). If what you are saying is so I would like to know. Do you have any thing on their marriage(date & place)? If Abigail was Francis Ange's wf. & mother of Francis Ange Sr. of Martin Co. N.C. was she from N.C. or Maryland? Or were there 2 brothers who came to N.C. from Maryland ( 1. (?) Ange md. Abigail & 2. Francis Ange Sr. md. Ester (?), if so was Francis b. 1629 & d.1767 there father or grand father. Reita , Ricky probably remembers my grandparents David & Mamie Ange. They lived in the old Ange home which has been in the fam. for at least 200 yrs. Bye for now & Merry Christmas with a Happy New Year.

Ange family in Tennessee

My Ange family (Henry Ange and Francis Barnes) moved from NC to TN around 1878. Henry D. Ange was a confederate vetran. He died shortly after coming to TN. My great grandmother Lee Annie Ange has a brother named Henry Ange born about 1878-79 in Trenton/Dyer TN. Henry and Francis died before 1890 and left several orphaned children. My g-grandfather married Lee Annie when she was only 12. He had lost his wife Golda Blessing shorly after the birth of their first child. I am looking for any information concernign the death of Henry Ange and Francis Barnes or any other connections to this line.

Esther Moore

Jamesville North Carolina Census 1880 found:
Stephen H. Davis (age 29) married Sarah Jane (age 26)
......Children
Charles (born 1873)
Debro (1874)
Emma (1876)
Sally W.(1880)
***There were additional children born to Stephen and Sarah...
Dennis V. (married Romulus Ange) . Had a least two children...???Onward and Goldie.
Ora (married Herbert Lee Ange) . Had three children.
Clifton, Cecil and Marvin. Cecil and Marvin were twins.
Marvin died during infancy.
Herbert Harvey (1889 ?) (married Mamie Wiggins)
Had two children...Udee and Herbert Harvey Jr.

There may be more to this family I am not sure as I am just really trying to look into it seriously.
I am told Stephen and Sarah are buried near Williamston/Jamesville/Darden areas. Supposely there is a "Davis" grave- yard there.

My father was Harvey Jr and is no longer living. Actually I have no living aunts or uncles...only cousins who are as limited re: our family history.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
.........Sarah Jane Davis-Crawford
Know Emma was married to Lloyd Gardner and had at least two children Herbert and Mamie Ruth Wynne.
Also know Charlie lived in Plymouth but not sure where he is buried. Know he had at least one son (Charlie ---who lived his later yrs in Beaver Dam Virginia with his wife --Ruth)
I too have been looking for info on Henry or Albert Ange. I am not sure which one is my g.g.grandfather, but he married either Frances Emily Barnes or Emily Barns or Emily Barnett.i do have much information beginning with his daughter Nora Viola b. 6/10/1874 and her twin. I believe both brothers migrated to west Tn., Lauderdale and Dyer Counties. My e-mail is Sherrytem@comcast.net and please contact me directly.
