Laurie, I have found alot of record on aol by typing in www.excite.com, then typing in Social Security Death Records and searching. When you go to any place where you would type in a name, it should give you information on the date of birth or death. Some sites are differant, and you will find more people in some site than you will in others. Another way is Vital Records Search. After typing in the www.excite, search for Vital Records. This will take you to sites where you would have to write to a specific address in any state you wish for birth, death, marriage, or any other record you wish to have.
