There is no obvious person in the current telephone directory for Dundee and district. If he is still alive he would be 74 and nothing comes up that indicates his death in Scotland (Scotlandspeople) up to 2006.
If he was still resident in UK in 1953 at age 18 he would have been liable for military service so perhaps a record of this can be found.
However, he may have left UK and on findmypast.com I find a record of a John Angus age 5 born (calculated from age)about 1934 sailing from Glasgow to New York on the American Importer (United States Lines)departing 26 October 1939.
It might be wise to determine if this was your John and whether he then remained in USA or maybe Canada before following up possibilities in UK.

I am afraid I don't know much about Iain's origins beyond that I think he may have been adopted and that before marriage his mother was my aunt Eleanor [Nellie] Macmillan, daughter of John Macmillan and his wife Mary McKechnie. I have lost contact with my father's brothers and sisters since they left for Canada in the early 1950s and this was an attempt to refind them via a relatively dictinctive name.

Re: Angus DNA

Check out http://www.macinnes.org/misc/dnatesting.php where the steps for the Clan MacInnes DNA project are outlined. If you scan the site more broadly, you will note that "Angus" is taken to be a sept of MacInnes, or more correctly, MacAonghais. The testing is actually done through FamilyTreeDNA, see http://www.ftdna.com of Houston, where a variety of YDNA tests are available. They range from 12, 25, 37 & 67 marker "STR" tests for "haplotyping" to various "SNP" tests for "haplogrouping". If you are unfamiliar with the jargon, Wikipedia is a good source for background.
You don't have to join the Clan MacInnes in order to do the DNA testing and provide results to the group administrator, but you might find it interesting to join up. You get a better view of the other clan members who've tested if you do. So far, there are many with MacInnes, MacInnis, MacAngus, and so on; but I think I am the one and only straight Angus so far.
BTW, I descend from a long line of Alexander Anguses as well, but from further up north-east than Glasgow.

I am Allan Douglas Angus, (b. 1951 SK, Canada), son of Alexander Angus (b. 1919, MacDuff, Scotland), son of Edward Angus (b. 1886 MacDuff, Scotland), son of Alexander Angus (b. 1849 MacDuff), son of Alexander Angus (b. 1806 Gamrie, Scotland), and so on.

I have done Y-DNA testing to check the story that "Angus" is a sept of MacInnes. (See http://www.macinnes.org ) and I find that the existing set of folks involved in the MacInnes DNA project seem to have 3 distinct backgrounds. These include the expected DalRiada Scots, Norse, and what may be Pictish. I appear to fall into that latter category.

My haplogroup is R1b1b2a2 or R1-S116, for those into such things. My haplotype falls into what Sykes calls OGAP2 (google "Bryan Sykes") or what Oppenheimer calls R1b-9 "Rox" (google "Stephen Oppenheimer"). These patterns both point to a group of Mesolithic hunter-gatherers who entered Scotland about 15,000 - 13,000 years ago. This rather predates the invasion of Argyll by the Scots by around, oh, a lot.

My Ysearch ID is SDZ95, and I have also posted DNA results on my site here at Ancestry.

But enough about me... I have found no one else with the Angus surname at FamilyTreeDNA, Ysearch, or Ancestry.

Would anyone else among you be willing to step up and do Y-DNA testing to help further uncover the background of this family name?

Great. Once you get your 25-marker results, FTDNA will probably also make an intelligent guess as to your haplogroup, which for Scots is usually R1b, R1a, or I1a. R1b is often associated with the expected Celtic or Pictish ancestry, while I1a often implies a Viking somewhere. R1a may imply Norse or Germanic ancestry. If your interests swing to verifying the haplogroup estimate, you can later get what's called a deep-clade test. The 25-marker test is a good starting point for testing relationships over the last few hundred years. Haplogroup testing looks at deeper relationships over, perhaps, some thousands of years.

You'll also be able to look for DNA matches in the FTDNA database and at YSearch.

On the mtDNA side, most testing can only tell the haplogroup of your maternal line. It is not so useful for judging near-term maternal relationships, unlike YDNA on the paternal side.

You may also be interested in looking at http://dna-forums.org which is a message board dedicated to this area.

Angus family from Bute, Boleskine and Inverness, Scotland

Seeking information on an ANGUS family who married into my Macraes. I would be very grateful for any additional information.

MARGARET MACRAE was born in the Black Isle parish of Knock¬bain on 11 October 1796 and was baptised at Arpafeelie Epis¬copal chapel on 16 October the same year. She died in 1831 and there is a memorial stone to her in the Kilmuir burial ground, Black Isle. At Inverness on 11 May 1821 she married PETER ANGUS, a gunner, sailor and cutterman who served on several ships including the "Atlantic Cutter". He was born at Rothesay, Isle of Bute c.1788 and died at Inverness on 8 January 1863. Peter was the son of Peter Angus, a shipmaster, and Janet Muir. At Boleskine, Inverness shire on 5 June 1835, four years after the death of his first wife, Peter married Jemima Ross. She was born at Ardersier, Inverness shire c.1814 and died at 5 Waterloo Place, Inverness on 13 March 1873 (the informant being her son-in-law Alexander Martin. Jemima was the daughter of Kenneth Ross, a lock keeper, and Johanna McIntyre. Peter's family home was 68, Telford Road, Inverness, and Peter was latterly a Superintendent 2nd Mate for the Inland Revenue. Peter and his second wife Jemima were buried in a family plot at Chapel Yard, Inverness. From both marriages there was issue:
1 ARCHIBALD ANGUS (1st marriage) was baptised in Inverness on 29 August 1823. He was alive at the time of the death of his sister Catherine [4 ] in 1862.
2 ISABELLA ANGUS (1st marriage) was baptised at Inverness on 5 April 1825 and emigrated to Australia. Some time after the death of her mother, Isabella erected a memorial stone to her in the Kilmuir burial ground on the Black Isle: on that stone it refers to Isabella as "of Chesterfield, Waverley, Australia". (Waverley is a small area of Sydney, in which lie roads called Chesterfield Lane and Chesterfield Place - hence the name on her mother's memorial. It is believed that there was originally a large house called Chesterfield in that area).
3 JANET ANGUS (1st marriage) was baptised in Inverness on 30 April 1827.
4 CATHERINE ANGUS (1st marriage) was baptised in Inverness on 29 November 1829 and died there on 2 November 1862. She was a general domestic servant and died unmarried at her father's house.
5 JOANNA ANGUS (second marriage) was born at Boleskine, Inverness shire on 12 March 1836 and was a dressmaker and general domestic servant. In Inverness on 26 October 1866 she married Alexander Martin, a gardener. He was born c.1838 and was the son of Donald Martin, a shoemaker, and Ann Allan. In 1873, Alexander was living at 71, Tomnachurch Street, Inverness and was the informant upon the death of his wife's mother, Jemima Angus/McIntyre. (In 1928 upon the death of Joanna's sister Jemima, the informant was a Martin relation who lived at 15, Derby Road, Withington, Manchester). They had one son and two daughters (I have more information).
6 JANET ANGUS (2nd marriage) was born in Inverness and bap¬tised there on 3 January 1838. She died in 1909 and was buried in a family plot at Chapel Yard, Inverness. In 1861 Janet was a domestic servant and she lived with her parents in their Inverness home.
7 PETER ANGUS (2nd marriage) was born in Inverness on 2 November 1840. He died in 1851 and was buried in a family plot at Chapel Yard, Inverness.
8 JESSIE ANGUS was born in Inverness c.1841, according to the 1871 census, at which time she was living at her widowed mother's home in Telford Road, Inverness. (It is possible that this "Jessie" is a nickname for "Janet" [6].
9 JEMIMA ANGUS was born c.1844 and died in 1847 aged three years and was buried in the family plot at Chapel Yard, Inverness.
10 KENNETH ANGUS (2nd marriage) was born c.1846 and died in 1854 and was buried in a family plot at Chapel Yard, Inverness.
11 JOHN ANGUS (2nd marriage) was born in Lochbroom c.1848 (the 1871 census says Ullapool). He died unmarried at 5 Waterloo Place, Inverness on 2 November 1872 and was buried in a family plot at Chapel Yard, Inverness. In 1861 he was an apprentice sheepman and in 1871 he is described as a hardware merchant in Inverness: at both times he was living in his parents' Inverness home. Upon his death he was described as an ironmonger.
12 ARCHIBALD ANGUS (2nd marriage) was born in Inverness on 19 June 1849 and was baptised there the following month on 17 July. In 1871 he was living at his widowed mother's Inverness home and was a hardware merchant. Archibald died in New York, USA on 25 December 1913. (Strangely, on Archibald's baptism entry, his father Peter was described as a "grocer of Telford Road, Inverness", not a sailor). It was Archibald who paid for a memorial stone on the Angus family plot at Chapel Yard, Inverness, and upon his death, his name was added to the stone.
13 JEMIMA ANGUS (2nd marriage) was born in Inverness c.1852. She died unmarried on 5 September 1928 at ..... Carse Road, Inverness (though her home was then at 4 Telford Road), and she was buried in the family plot at Chapel Yard, Inverness. In 1871 she was living with her widowed mother in Telford Road, Inverness. Upon her death, Jemima was described as a ladies companion, and the informant was a Martin relation of her sister Joanna.
David Kidd (Kydd) and Isabella McNab

Seeking birth information and parents for David Kidd (or Kydd) who was born in 1866 (other dates are 1873 and 1870) in Carmyllie, Angus Scotland. He married Isabella McNab who was born in Dundee in or about 1876. Their children were Catherine, John, David, Alexander, Mary, and Jeannie. The family is referenced in the 1901 census as living on Ladywell Road in Motherwell Scotland - David is a Railway Engineer. The family moved to Canada in or about 1910 and settled in Toronto, Ontario - listed as living at 38 Silver street. Isabella is the daughter of William Mcnab & Catherine. In Toronto they may have been grocers or store owners. Son John worked as a printer in Toronto and then joined WW1 (Underage)and later was an RCMP officer in Ottawa (married Viola Gardiner from Cantley Quebec and they had 13 children). John died in 19663 - the entire family is a roadblock past and future - any help greatly appreciated.

ANGUS of Grand Rapids, MI, 1950+

Do you know the approximate birth dates of the Anguses you named? If you mean those were siblings of the same household in the 1950's, they might have been descended from the family found on census databases, possibly children of George, b. 1920, or Robert, b. 1925. Notice that the name Alice occurs: Alice, b. ca. 1877.

In Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI, 1880, ANGUS: Josephus, 42; Sarah, 39; & ch. Willard, 19; Rosa, 18; George, 16; all b. NY; & Alice, 3, b. MI.

In Kent Co., 1900, ANGUS: Charles, 66; Martha, 67; J. A., 42; Mertie, 40; Willard E. {Wm.?}, 40; George, 34.

In Kent Co., 1910, ANGUS: Martha, 77; Wm., 50 {Willard?}.

Kent Co., 1930, ANGUS: A. George, 31; Rose, 30; George, 10; Marguerite, 9; Alice, 8; Robert, 5; Wm., 70.

I Googled Zabasearch and clicked advanced search for the males you listed in Michigan. There is a David listed in Ann Arbor, b. Dec. 1932/3? & Raymond of Midland, MI, b. Oct. 1932. You might possibly find the correct ones if you have better information about ages. I don't see the males named on the Social Security Death Index, so they are probably living. SSDI does have George ANGUS (31 July 1919 - 22 May 1988) last res. Kent Co., MI.

Re: Angus Family moved to Ontario,Canada

This is my husband's family. His grandfather was Leslie Angus. I have tried for quite some time to find information and others out there that are related, especially regarding Robert Byron Angus and Julia Orange Johnston. Robert Byron was my husbands great grandfather also. I have a picture of this couple and their children, all except George, who wasn't born at the time the photo was taken. The original couple that came over from Scotland with the Rutherglen Union Society in 1821 are John Angus and his wife, Margaret Smith. If still interested, I would love to exchange information. If I get your email address we could discuss this away from the message board.

David Angus descendants

I am looking for information on David Angus, born 5 July 1872 in Glasgow. He was the youngest son of John Angus and Catherine Cairns Morrison. He was a Silver Smith who emigrated to the USA in 1893. He arrived at Ellis Island on 3 July 1893 aboard The Umbria (which came from Liverpool). I don't know whether he remained in the USA or moved on to Canada. Thank you.
Ruth Stephens

Re: missing marriage date for an Edward Angus wed to a Jane Douglas, both born approx. 1821

Hello there
Regards to the marriage info - this couple are also in my family tree. I have a strong Angus connection. I havent been able to find a marriage for these 2 either but I might be able to shed a bit of light on this for you.
A lot of the Angus's didnt get married in what you would call a normal church. They all lived near to the Scottish Border and it was quite a common thing for them to elope and get married at Lamberton Toll booth in Scotland. These marriages are classed as irregular border marriages and its a nightmare getting info as a lot of the records are not available. My local records office as some records but probably only a couple of decades. They are not listed in this book.
Fiona
