Hi William

I'm not sure if I ever replied to this - if I did please ignore this!

Your grandfather, Harry John Annal was born in the USA. His parents, William & Elizabeth, lived for a short while in Boston but soon returned to South Ronaldsay.

If you have a look at my website, you'll see some details of this family: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dave.annal/trees/tree_f1.html

I have information on the Annal family of North East Fie, Scotland - collected when investigating for my Annal friends.
The first mention of someone by that name is Janet Annal, Kippo Farm, in the Parish of Crail Fife - sometime in the 1300s.

Re: Annal family

Jane was born in 1854, a year before civil registration was introduced in Scotland. There is absolutely no doubt that she was an ANNAL - her parents were David ANNAL (1807-1878) and Elizabeth MATTHEW, who married in Liff (near Dundee) in 1834. They had nine children that I know of:
William; David; John; Mary; James Matthew; Alexander; Mary Ann; George & Jane.

David ANNAL was the oldest son of William ANNAL (1778-1856) and Margaret ANDERSON of St Andrews in Fife. They had three other sons who each ended up in a different part of Scotland.
David (above) stayed in Dundee. James (1809-1895) moved to Dalry in Ayrshire and is the ancestor of a huge group of ANNALs (who normally use the spelling ANNALL). William (1812-1881) returned to St Andrews with his parents and is the ancestor of another large group who stayed in St Andrews. John (1816-1867) moved to Edinburgh and married but had no children.

I passed much of this information to Karen Powrie recently - are you in touch with Karen?

Quick geography lesson! Th city of Dundee is north of the River Tay. On the other side of the river is the County of Fife which includes the city of St Andrews. Orkney is many many miles north of this area.

I dug thru and found a message from Karen Powrie who thinks her Great Grandfather David Duncan is my Great Grandfather William Duncan's brother. She has a brother William marrying a Jane Annal in her research. I have fingers crossed that I will hear from her soon and that she will have some solid documentation. I am hoping she is in Scotland or England with access to better information than I have so far.

Monica's Isabella is from Orkney, whereas your Annals, Janice, are from Dundee. I've never been able to find any link between the Orkney group and the Fife/Dundee ones and I'm 99& certain that there isn't one. However, in both cases the name seems to have evolved from the name ANNAN or ANNAND.

I have an Isabella but so far have not identified if she is an Annal or Duncan. I would appear that she spent some time in New York. I have several photos of her and she has facial features that are strikingly similar to my grandmother who is an Annal- Duncan. In many photo she is with a man who's name escapes me. Do you have a scanned photo of your Isabella? The photos I have of this Isabella could have been taken during a visit to New York where my grandmother grew up. I have not been able to put this Isabella in as cousin or neice to my Grandmother Florence Duncan. My Grandmother was referred to often as "Flo".
