Hello Kevin

I am an Anness born in London although now living just outside Edinburgh. I was interested to see you mention the Christian names of Francis and Frederick. My grandfather was Francis as is my father (although known as Frank.) My uncle was also Frederick. Looking on a UK geneolgy website these names crop up frequently. I therefore suspect that we have a common ancestry. I have researched a little into the surname of Anness and can tell you that it is very old - Anglo Saxon - and has it's origins in Diss, Norfolk in England. The coat of arms associated most strongly with the name is very simple thus reflecting it's age. The older the name the more simple the coat of arms as there were fewer family names.

Hope this is of interest to you.

Best wishes - Debbie

I?m not related to the ANNESS family, but there is a book titled, ?A Dictionary of British Surnames,? by P.H. Reaney, pub. in 1976. Page 10 has an entry for Annas, Anness, Annis, Anniss. There are only four lines of text, beginning with this :

?Annes 1170-76 YCh.?

On page lxiii, at the front of the book, the abbreviation ?YCh? is expanded as : W. Farrer and C.T. Clay, ?Early Yorkshire Charters,? 12 vols, 1914-65.

I?m out of my depth on this because my own family research is stuck in the 1800s, but I wish good luck to the ANNESS researchers.

Reg Niles

I know of another family even older, or perhaps of the same bloodline. I am an Anness derived from the rainy river district in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. As far back as I can trace my lineage for sure is late 1800's. I am very interested to know exactly where my great grandparent Frederick Anness, who settled in Emo, Ontario; in the Rainy River District was born. Apparently my grandfather Francis Bruce Anness was born in 1912 or 13 in Emo. He claimed to be the seventh generation which would make me the ninth generation. At an average lifespan of 55 years, this would bring the original Anness possibly from 250 to 275 years back, around 1700-1750 in North America. If anyone can enlighten me with a response to this letter I would greatly appreciate it. Likely English/Scottish or possibly French origin I suspect, but that's just an educated guess. You can email me at Kanness@gmail.com Thanks.

Anness in Maryland, mid-late 1700s

Since Anness seems to be a family which began around CT, MA, RI area, and because my Elizabeth Anness Brawner is living with Gilbert Smith Minor in 1850, there may be a connection with Stonington, New London, CT. Gilbert Smith Minor and his brother Frederick William Minor were obviously living in Dumfries in 1850. Gilbert was a lawyer. Their parents were Robert and Alura Minor from Stonington.

It is really frustrating that no-one seems to be able to tell me much about Anness in MD. There was a Thomas Annis who is listed in Charles Co MD, but he must have been born in late 1600s since his marriage to Elizabeth Mackey is listed before 1718. My Elizabeth was born about 1798, so he is too old to be her father. I can find no obvious son for Thomas and Elizabeth living in MD.

There was a John B Anness (a saddler) who was born about 1780. He lived in Fauquier Co VA. His widow Sarah Carter died just prior to the 1850 census. It is possible he was Elizabeth's brother. John was born in VA whereas Elizabeth is listed as born in MD.

I suspect your Anness people have nothing to do with mine. However if you can find a link, I would appreciate knowing about it.

I am still looking without seeming success :(
for Elizabeth Anness and her family. She married
Henry Brawner (s/o John Cornish Brawner) in
Alexandria VA in 1815. There do not appear to
be any other Anness family members about at
that time. There are Annis family members and
conclude they must be related because they
lived in close proximity in and around Dumfries.

Henry and Elizabeth were both born in MD. Henry
was presumably born in Durham Parish (whose
records for that period are lost). So Elizabeth
may also have been born in that Parish.

Looking, looking, looking! If anyone can help
PLEASE do.
