Dear Ernie,

I found your post while doing a search on the Tully Family. My husband is the ggg grandson of Nathan's partner, Charles Hoppin, and is named after his son, Charles Hoppin Tully.

You are probably familiar with their business, Hoppin & Appel. We spent our vacation in New Mexico this summer and had occasion to visit the former site of the Hoppin & Appel trading post in Mesilla. It is now a national landmark and is called the Paul Taylor home.

We would love to see a photo of Nathan, if you have one. If you happen to have any photos of Charles Hoppin, that, too, would be wonderful, as we do not have any.

You mentioned in another post the name of Henry Tully. Was he somehow related to Pinckney Tully? I know that Pinckney lived in Santa Fe for a time and eventually moved to Las Cruces/Mesilla. I also am aware that he and Charles Hoppin were brother Masons. Pinckney adopted Charles' young son after Charles Sr. died in 1864.

What ever happened to Nathan? We know he inherited Charles' portion of the business when Charles died, but that's about it.

In any case, it is fascinating to find the descendant of our ancestor's partner!

Linda Tully
casatully@comcast.net

Joe:

All the records on my great-grandfather Colonel Appel's ancestors indicate the family was in Philadelphia by the 1840's, and that my great-great grandfather Simon Appel came from Hungary. He was German-speaking and belonged, at one point, to the Pennsylvania German Society. His son, Aaron, whom I knew, was listed in the Yarzheit book at Rodeph Shalom synagogue in Philadelphia. Aaron went to Central High School in Philadelphia, then to Jefferson Medical College. When he graduated, he joined the Army, with his brother Daniel, as a surgeon and a Cavalry officer. He fought in the Indian Wars, rode up San Juan Hill, and was House physician to the Algonquin Hotel during its heyday. All in all, he was quite a fellow, and a representative Ashkenazim. When he married an Episcopal priest's daughter, he turned his back on his ancestry and his faith. My grandmother never discussed her father's background with me. I discovered my Jewish ancestors after her death and her son's (my father's) death. Aaron Appel lies buried with his wife Sophie on a hillside in Arlington National Cemetery just down from the tombs of the Unknowns.

I am a descendant of some Jewish Appels who settled in Philadelphia in the late 1830s or early 1840s to the best of my knowledge. They belong to Adath Jeshuren and to Rodeph Shalom congregations in Philadelphia. They had lots of children, some of who moved to Chicago (Robert Appel). They came from Hungary. The family intermarried with Greenewalds.

I am a descendant from Simon Appel who was born in 1829, probably in Hungary. Simon's father was Michael, born in Hungary in 1799, died in Philadelphia, PA 27 Dec 1872. As far as I know, these Appels were German-speaking Jews. Simon held a second-class seat at Rodeph Shalom, the German Jewish Congregation in Philadelphia. I am willing to share my information with other descendants of this Simon Appel.

Anna Louise Appel (20 Oct 1897 - 17 Mar 1993) was the daughter of William Henry Appel & Lulu P. Weber Appel. According to her obituary, she lived in Boise in later years, but when younger attended both U. of ID. & U. of OR., and graduated cum laude from Columbia University, then spent several years in New York city as a dancer with the Ziegfield Follies, subsequently spent several years in Canada where she was a superintendent of Chatauqua. Would be interested in learning & sharing more information on this family; I am distantly related - Anna was my g-grandmother's great-niece.

Dean Geiss
dcgeiss@bellsouth.net

The family of John George Apple/Appel arrived in this country 1849 from Baden, Germany. Children listed in his will are John, John George, Henry, John Nicholas (dec.), and Konigude.
I believe Bernhart Appel, b.may 30, 1847 d. Oct. 20, 1929 in Evansville, was his grandson . I do not know who the parents were. Bernhart (Bernard) married Catherine Dill, and their children were Benjamin, Anna, Carrie, Kate, Albert Martin and Henry C. Appel. Benjamin was my husband's grandfather. I have most of the family information on Benjamin's children and grandchildren, but Bernard's parents remain a mystery. I have been through most of the courthouse records, but I appreciate your offer. Thank you.
Hi

I am the daughter of the oldest of the 12 children of Edwin L Appel and Virginia Faye Rice. (daughter of Alma and Joe Rice) You have to be friends with my aunt Debbie. I am also in the process of running down the Appels and not having to much luck. My mother does know her fathers mothers name was Rosella and fathers name is William. There is actually a 13th and old son of Edwin's named Edwin Jr. Mother also told me she had always heard her father was born in Kansas.
I know your message is old but my mother is also deperate to find something about her ancestry. I you have anymore news PLEASE let me know and have Debbie email me anyway.
ryanandjanell@yahoo.com
thank you!

Appel-Sellers-McGraw-Battin....Lillian Appel was the daughter of Fred Appel and his second wife. Lillian was the second wife of John Sellers...marrying him when her half sister (daughter of Fred Appel and first wife) died. I am in contact with a descendent of Fred Appel and third wife. Another relative has traced the Appel family back to 1540's. Would be happy to hear from you.

I am looking for information about my great-grandmother Elizabeth Appel. I believe she was born in the US, but her parents were from Hesse, Germany. Her dates are approximately 1870-1940. She was married to Henry Fischbach. As a child she lived in Pennsylvania and is in fact buried in Philadelphia. She and Henry lived in Catonsville, Maryland. They had 5 or 6 daughters and 1 son that died as a boy. Any information on her parents and family would be appreciated. I know that her parents came over, but I don't know when or where.
Kari Farnell
