Appelbaum's from Lodz and Sierpc

My grandmother's maiden name Tillie Appelbaum and she was born in Lodz around 1898. Her father was Mendel and her mother, Rachel. Her siblings are Max (came to US), Joseph (went to Israel) , Murray (Morris)(came to US), Hannah (perished during WWII). Their mother died and their father remarried Cyril. They moved around 1914 from Lodz to Sierpc. They had Zeev, Tova, Dina, and Rivka, who all went to Israel. Tova and Dina moved later to Canada. I believe there was another son from Rachel named Haskell who died as a teenager in Poland. I am trying to ancestors and info on where exactly they lived in Poland.

Hi Charles,

This is what I've put together so far:
Charles and Sylvia had Frank (Franklyn, Franklin) and Rose
Rose had three children; I'm the oldest.
Frank Applebaum was married four times. First to Sheila then to Jackie, with whom he had Samuel and Howard, then to Carol, with whom he had Scott and Ian and then to Renee, with whom he had you, Brandi and Yelana. Does this sound right to you?
I have one photo of him and Charles and Sylvia. I also have a copy of his original SSN application. I have other bits and pieces of information, too. Please get back to me if you'd like to compare notes.
Warmly,
Deb

Hi again,

Okay, I was wrong in my previous reply. This was the message I just got. And I understand that none of the other names are correct, but just fyi, on my uncle's ssn application it shows Appelbaum and on his school records it shows Applebaum. What makes it even more interesting is that his grandfather spelled it Affelbaum. I think spelling was arbitrary back then.

Warmly,
Deb

My given name was irving Noah Appelbaum, born May 5, 1925 in NYC. My father was Louis Appelbaum, brother of Morris Appelbaum (with three sons, Louis, Ralph, and one other I don't recall). Yes, I've just turned 86!
Another brother was Ben living in Akron with 6 children I believe, and Izzie, who lived in Hartford Conn. until he moved to Long Beach NY where my father and mother lived out their lives.
In 1951, starting a career in San Francisco theater and UC Berkeley teaching I changed my name to our grandfather's- Rachmael,(Rachmiel)- and took the surname of Ben-Avram.

My sister Billie, now 80 yrs! lives in Palm Springs, and we often talk about finding our Cleveland relations. Are you part of what mmust be our Uncle Morris's and Ben's family? We Appelbaums have a rich heritage. We would welcome warmly any connections that are still open to us.

The fact you spell Appelbaum with an "el" and mention familiar first names is promisng. Please don't hesitate to respond,-- even if it may be we do not share our roots. But my intuition tells me the aswer is YES.
Until soon,
Rachmael

The Franklin (Frankie) Appelbaum/Applebaum I'm trying to trace was born on October 13th,1932 in Coney Island, NY and died in December 1985. His social security application spells his name appELbaum and his Navy papers spell it appLEbaum.

I know he was married to a woman named Jackie and had two daughters named Marsha (Marcia?)and Allison who would probably be between 55 and 65 today (2011). I'm pretty sure they moved to New Jersey in the late fifties or early sixties.

His sister, my mother was called Rose, but I understand she may have actually been named Raisa or Raizel. She passed in July, 1960.

His father, my grandfather, was Charles and I'm fairly sure his grandparents, my great-grandparents were Samuel and Frieda Temares Appelbaum/Appelbaum. My maternal grandmother was Sylvia La Vine. She was the daughter of Jacob and Devora/Dobora (Dora) La Vine and the sister of Harold.

I'd really love to connect with Marsha and Allison.

My direct email is dkny101@gmail.com.
Re: LAWRENCE V. APPELBAUM

Joseph Appelbaum married Anna Maria Bax on 22 Jan 1825 at Sankt Johannes Baptist Katholische Pfarrkirche, Delbrück, Amt Delbrück, Kreis Paderborn, Regierungsbezirk Minden, Provinz Westfalen, Königreich Preußen. They lived in the town of Ostenland had at least 12 children. At least two of these children moved to the US.

Johann Georg Appelbaum

Born 18 Jul 1831 at Ostenland, Amt Delbrück, Kreis Paderborn, Regierungsbezirk Minden, Provinz Westfalen, Königreich Preußen.

Baptised 18 Jul 1831 at Sankt Johannes Baptist Katholische Pfarrkirche, Delbrück, Amt Delbrück, Kreis Paderborn, Regierungsbezirk Minden, Provinz Westfalen, Königreich Preußen.

Arrived 28 Jan 1852 in New Orleans on the ship "Welker."
Died 10 Jan 1914 in Lee County, Iowa.
Buried in Oakland Catholic Cemetery, Keokuk, Jackson Township, Lee County, Iowa.

Georg and his first wife had approximately 11 children near Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. One of these children was Lawrence Applebaum (1869-1954) who moved to Saint Louis where he married and later died.

Johann Theodor Appelbaum

Born 3 Jan 1835 at Ostenland, Amt Delbrück, Kreis Paderborn, Regierungsbezirk Minden, Provinz Westfalen, Königreich Preußen.

Baptised 5 Jan 1835 at Sankt Johannes Baptist Katholische Pfarrkirche, Delbrück, Amt Delbrück, Kreis Paderborn, Regierungsbezirk Minden, Provinz Westfalen, Königreich Preußen.

Arrived 8 Nov 1864 at New York on ship "Georg."

I suspect he is the same person who was buried 3 Feb 1903 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Saint Louis City, Missouri. This person married Elisabeth Buchholtz(sp?) and had at least four children in Saint Louis, Missouri. One of these children was Charles Appelbaum (1880-1920).

Notice the different spellings of the two brothers' families. Theodor and his family spelled their name Appelbaum, but Georg and his family spelled their name Applebaum.

I found the information about their birth and emigration from a great book by Heinz Marxkors called "Auswanderer aus dem Ortsteil Ostenland im ehemaligen Kirchspiel Delbrück im ehemaligen Kreis Paderborn in der ehemaligen Provinz Westfalen, im ehemaligen Königreich Preußen: Ausgewandert in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika." There is an index online at http://www.slcl.org/branches/hq/sc/indexes/marxkors/marxkors...

You will notice in the index that there is a Joseph Appelbaum who emigrated from the parish of Elsen, which is next to the parish of Delbrück. I do not have the Elsen book, so I do not know the birth date of this Joseph Appelbaum. I know there is a Joseph Appelbaum family in Saint Louis and another Joseph Appelbaum family in Lee County, Iowa. Joseph Appelbaum from Elsen could be either of these, or he may have gone somewhere else.

They had one daughter my Grandmother Audrey Reardon. Marie then remarried a man named Gaynor and had 3 sons. She apparently ran a boarding house in Los Angeles late in life. I would love to hear if any of this information matches anything you have.

Appelbaum, Ft. Mad,Iowa, Catholic Branch

I'm looking for the Catholic branch of the Appelbaums who came through St.Louis and settled in Ft. Madison, IA in mid-1800's. This was my ggrandfather, Joseph Appelbaum, who came from Germany, perhaps Prussia. This is a tough thread to chase as I have nothing but his name and eventual marriage to local woman (Nelle). There are a few other male Appelbaums in the Ft. Madison area at the same time--perhaps relatives?

Appelbaums in Missouri and New York

My ggf was Samuel Appelbaum (b. 1869, Russia;
d. 1954, St. Louis, MO). I am Helen's nephew
(hi Helen!). Helen, from the Hebrew translation
on his gravestone I'm pretty sure Sam's father's
name was Isaac (Itsac).

I have questionf for the rest of you. Why are
Appelbaums concentrated in Missouri and New York?
Check out http://www.hamrick.com/names/names.cgi?surname=appelbaumyear...
Comments?

Also, I recall seeing a Morris Appelbaum in either the MO or NY fed
census returns. Have to dig out my notes to see exactly where.
--Jim

Hi Barry,
I, too, am trying to locate family. I responded to your message because an old book of my mother's makes reference to "Uncle Harry in Long Island".
My grandparents were Sylvia (LaVine) and Charles Applebaum of Coney Island, NY.
Their only children were Franklin who died in 1985 and my mother who died in 1960. She used the name Rose, but I think her real name may have been Raizel.
Have you had any info on this particular line of the family tree?
Oh, if it helps, my grandfather Charles used the nickname "Honey". He MAY have had some sisters named Lena or Sadie, but maybe not.
I was very young when I taken from them by my step-mother.
Any assistance you could offer would be great.
Thanks, Debby

Helen, I'd love to know if we're related. My grandfather was Morris Appelbaum. He had a slew of brothers: Benjamim, Hymie, Robert, and William (there may be others). His father's name was David. David Appelbaum had a couple of brothers as well, but I don't know their names. I think most of these people lived in New York. Can you or your husband make any connection to that? I know it's not too much to go on, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Take care! --Andrea
