The list at British Genealogy doesn't exist any more (British Genealogy stopped operating lists 2 or 3 years ago, and we lost all the messages!).
There is now a forum at http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=b... - try that. We don't have many members there yet.
Richard

Laurie-I did know that Daniel was a Civil War Vet and that he was discharged in 1865 with a gunshot wound to his left leg and that it had to be amputated. I didn't not know that a headstone was ordered for him and I did not know where he was buried. As a matter of fact that is one of the pieces that has been eluding me for quite some time. Now I am hoping that I will find Mary Jane buried there as well. I am planning a trip up to Langston in the next couple of weeks, for it just so happens that a grandson of Daniels, Franks youngest son Arthur is buried in Langston Cemetery.

The Michigan Marriage Record (FHC Film #2342449) list Daniel born in Allegany Co. NY and Mary Jane born in Oreleans Co. NY. So that would seem to back up your thought that he is Phillip's son. I will check in Montcalm and see what I can find on him. Thanks for the directiona and I will keep you posted on what I find.- Diane

Hi Diane-I don't know how far you've researched Daniel S Appleby. He was a veteran of the Civil War-21st Mi Infantry-so when he died March 5 1897,a headstone was ordered for him in Langston Cemetery-Pine township,Montcalm Co.If you look at the census-both he and Mary were born in NY,and Franklin was born there too. He's either a son of David and Bethana Appleby(ee,ie,etc)of Chatauqua Co,or more likely Phillip and Sybil Appleby(my ancestors)who were from Spafford,NY and early settlers of Allegany co.If it's true Mary Jane was born in Olean-it's more likely he was Phillip's son. Let me know how you do with finding out more on him. I would start in Montcalm with town death certificates. Many towns kept these records before they were required to. Daniel died in 1897,so there's a good chance youight find one!-Laurie

I am seeking any info on Daniel S Appleby. I know he was born in New York in 1827, married Mary Jane Lane 11 May 1868 in Grand Haven, Ottawa, Michigan and died after 1880 in Michigan, possibly Montcalm County. They had one son that I know of, my gg-grandfather Franklin A., born June 1856 died 1932.
I am hoping the find more info on Daniel and his parents, of whom I know nothing. If anyone can connect any dots for me it will be very much appreciated.

Diane

My mother was an APPLEBY - and her family were "originally" (?) from South Cockerington near Louth. The furthest back I have been able to go is to John APPLEBY and his wife Elizabeth who were probably born in the 1760s/1770s. In my fairly extensive APPLEBY tree, however, I have Ann APPLEBY of Stewton, Lincs. marrying George BRUMPTON around 1872 - and Frances Appleby of Grimoldby, Lincs. marrying William FIFE in about 1861.
Is this of any help?

Dear Rick, I'm very interested in the family you mention. They must be relatives of mine, but I can't work out how. My mother was an APPLEBY from Lincolnshire- her family originated in South Cockerington. I've traced them as far back as John APPLEBY who married Elizabeth and had three children - William (b.1784), Thomas Larder (b. 1785) and John (b.1789).
Would be interested in comparing notes and discussing this further. I hope to hear from you.

Thanks for the reply! I have no idea who his father was. That's one of the things I was hoping to find out.
I know John Leslie Appleby and wife Lizzie lived in Kentucky for a while (Whetstone and Cole Camp in Cumberland Ky..) and in Tennessee.
Here are their children and some dates (I found this info on census records and in an obit)
Minnie E. Nov 1897
James (Jim) E. Jun 1899 may have married a Mary E. ?
Henry Thomas or Thomas Henry but called Tom 1902 (my dad remembers Tom some)
Curtis 1904
Fannie 1906
Otha E. 1904 I believe he may have married Ruth Pinson
And there may have been another son Leslie (I found his name listed in Minnie's obit) Minnie was my Great Grandmother and she and her son Robert (Robbie) was murdered in 1949

I believe John Leslie Appleby's wife Lizzie's first name was Elizabeth and they may have married Feb 19 1896
Thanks, I actually have been thinking on the same James H. tonight..son of Herrod and Caroline.. I saw a William and Mary On the same page as Herrod and Caroline in 1860 Russell Ky..and thought perhaps that was Herrods parents..

I did find a James in Clinton Ky with Wife Mary S. children Delia A, John W. and Sarah Q James had his mother Caroline and brothers Jacob, David S. and Robert living with them as well...in Clinton Ky 1880.. made me wonder if the son John could be my John Leslie (the w could have been an error)

I also noticed there is a James H. and a Dave both from Ky that are found in Tennessee at one time..just as my John Leslie is..

APPLEBY 2/19/1896 @ William Frank Stone's;
Cumberland Co., Ky. marriage records Book 1896, page 256.

It lists John's parents as J.H Appleby and Mollie, both born in Russell Co., Ky.
Have any ideas who J. H Appleby and wife Mollie could be?
I'm wondering if J.H. Could be James H... and Mollie could be a nickname of a Mary..
Any help would be great!

William Ivins Appleby (NJ, Utah) genealogy write-up

William Ivins Appleby was an early elder in the Mormon Church, having traveled from NJ to Salt Lake twice in the mid-1800s. In his "Autobiography and Journal of William I. Appleby", dated (started) July 6th, 1848, he gives some summary information about his siblings, with the footnote: "I will given their names, and the names of my kindred, together with their genealogy, as far as acquainted with in their proper place, and time."

This genealogy is not included in his Autobiography and Journal, which is reposited at the LDS Church Library. The church librarian has told me the church does not have it. Does this genealogy exist, and if so, where?
My family is also from Whetstone and some cousins are listed in Lawson Bottom which is just down and across the river near Cole Camp. I had run across your John in the census records and entered him into my database just in case I later found the connection but I haven't found him yet. I do know that Robert A "Bob" Appleby born 9/3/1838 and died 1/1/1918 who married Sarah Ann "Sally" Dicken, born 3/16/1836 and died 9/7/1907, on 12/13/1860 lived in Lawson's Bottom and while they had a John he was not the one you are looking for. Maybe he belongs to a brother but I don't have him listed as one of theirs. His brothers are Herrod "Harry" b. abt 1823, William Allen b. 10/20/1831 (my ancestor) and Pollard Turner b. 8/17/1840. Their parents names were William and Mary "Polly" Bartlett Appleby. Maybe you can get some clues from them. I am sure they are connected, I just don't know how.

Yes, William and Mary are Herrod's parents and James did have brothers Jacob, David and Robert so if the dates are right, I am sure you have the right ones. I am not sure if you know the history but Clinton County was formed from Cumberland and Russell County so the areas that they lived in is actually not far from each other. Creelsboro in Russell County is only across the river from Irish Bottom/Whetstone in Cumberland County and Wells Bottom in Clinton County.

I have three James H Applebys. The one that would be of the right age was born ca 1852 in Clinton County. His parents were Herrod "Harry" Appleby born ca 1823- died ca 1880 and Caroline Hereford. I don't have a wife for him but maybe that would give you a lead. I do know that the Applebys moved from Clinton to Russell and Cumberland at some point. I found quite a bit on the Applebys at the library in Jamestown, Ky. There is probably a lot more that I did not find as I only had a few hours to spend there.

I'm hoping to trace a friend or family member who could kindly provide a photo of:

HAZEL APPLEBY (14 Feb 1901-10 Mar 1951)
Married Thomas THOMPSON in 1926
Lived on Cole Street, East Peoria, Illinois
(Hazel tragically took her own life in 1951)

Thomas Thompson was my great great uncle and his family here in England would love to find someone who has a photo, or any memories, of his wife Hazel.

Many thanks in advance if that someone is you!
Martin
martin.crane@tesco.net
