Donald W. Applegate 1922-2012 Ohio

Donald W. Applegate ) (1922-2012) (NEWS ARTICLE) Donald W. Applegate, a decorated World War II Army veteran who battled German forces, was wounded twice, and liberated prisoner-of-war and labor camps, died April 29 in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, South Detroit Avenue. He was 90.

He had prostate cancer.

Mr. Applegate of Sylvania Township was the retired president and a former owner of Toledo-based Lucas Products, successfully marketing such varied niche items as laundry products and hand-cleaning solutions, iron-on mending patches, and adjustable bookshelves.
He retired in 1990 and his wife later became president.
The couple sold the business in 2010 to Robert Urfer.

Mr. Applegate received the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest medal for bravery in action, for refusing to yield to overwhelming enemy force in a small French town. He received the Silver Star for an episode in Germany in which Captain Applegate personally led reinforcements in an attack that inflicted heavy casualties and captured artillery, and more than 170 prisoners. He was wounded twice -- in the Battle of the Bulge and in the battle in the small French town -- and had two Purple Hearts.

He began speaking openly after a return visit to Europe for the 60th anniversary of the war's end, as he realized fewer veterans survived by the day. He was proud of his role in liberating the camps and aiding the prisoners, his wife said.

"He felt it was important that the younger generation would know about World War II and why he was there," she said.
He spoke of his experiences in Andrew "Bud" Fisher's book of interviews with area war veterans, What A Time It Was.

A 1940 graduate of Scott High School, Mr. Applegate was a student at Miami University when he was drafted.
After the war, he studied at the American Institute of Foreign Trade in Arizona and the National University of Mexico. He lived in Santiago, Chile, for three years on assignment for National City Bank of New York.

In 1960, he was a leader in Wood County, Ohio for John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign.

He was a staunch conservationist and a longtime birder and was a former treasurer of the Toledo Naturalists' Association.

He was formerly married to the late Barbara Applegate.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy, whom he married April 15, 1980; son, John Applegate; daughters, Martha Applegate and Anne O'Brien; stepson, Lonn Dugan; stepdaughters, Cynthia Dugan, Sherrie Larkin, and Jeannie Sanders; 18 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is to be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Sylvania United Church of Christ, of which he was a member. Memorial services are to be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday in the church. Arrangements are by Walker Funeral Home.

The family suggests tributes to Hospice of Northwest Ohio; Sylvania United Church of Christ, or the Toledo Naturalists' Association.

Contact Mark Zaborney at: mzaborney@theblade.com or 419-724-6182.
Published in Toledo Blade on May 9, 2012 .

We can place Aaron in Clark Co., IN by 1850 through two sources--the 1850 Census and his application for bounty land in 1855, where he states he resided in Clark Co., IN. He was probably a resident of IN even earlier, since he enlisted in in IN Militia in April, 1813.

In the 1850 Census, the person I believe is this Aaron is residing in Jeffersonville, Clark Co., IN, age 71, born in PA, and a farmer. Also in the household is Mary, age 69, born in PA; and John, age 29, born in IN. I do not believe this John is John Dothitte Applegate, his son.

Aaron is mentioned in a brief biographical article in "Biographical and Historical Souvenir for the Counties of Clark, Crawford, Harrison, Floyd, Jefferson, Jennings, Scott, and Washington, Indiana" (1889). The actual article is about his grandson, James P Applegate:

"James P. Applegate was born in Jeffersonville, September 29, 1838. His grandfather, Aaron Applegate, came to Indiana in 1806. His great-grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary army and also in the 'Whiskey Rebellion' and for forty years after a Hardshell Baptist preacher."

According to his bounty land application, Aaron joined John Prather's Company of the 2d Regiment of the Indiana Militia on 10 April 1813, and left on 9 May 1813.

The "Hezekiah of Indiana" and "Rev. Hezekiah Applegate who married Amelia Dothitte in New Jersey" are the same person. He was actually born a bit earlier--1743. He married Amelia in PA in 1763. He died in about 1830 in Scott Co., IN. He left a large paper trail, because, for a Baptist preacher, he sure did a lot of land deals.

Trying to define how a branch from NJ got intertwined with Indiana. Can anyone tell me anything about Aaron Applegate (1792-1860)He is father of John D Applegate. I am looking for parents of Aaron. The trees seem to have gotten mixed up with Hezekiah of Indiana (1760-1825)and Rev. Hezekiah Applegate who married Amelia Dothitte in New Jersey. This is really one for all you Genealogical sleuths out there.

Some sketchy information indicates two of their sons, Gilbert and Marion Alfred, were born there--albeit a decade later.

This whole branch "drifts" between MO and AR, which also makes me think she is part of it.

I think I found her in the 1860 census, living in Christian Co., MO. I can't find her in 1870, but find her again in Christian Co. in 1880. Christian Co., MO is associated with this branch--mainly through the descendants of Gilbert.

I have no idea why she would be residing with the Coughrans.

Hello Mary. Sallie Fisher was my Grandmothers baby sister. Sallie married a Seigel Applegate...which was my Grandfathers baby brother. My Grandfather was John C. Applegate. Sisters married brothers. Sallie and Seigel did have 1 son...a Fred Herman Applegate...who when Sallie and Seigel divorced...Seigel took the boy and would not let Sallie have him. Fred went with Seigel to California...where Fred married and had Charles and a Ronald...and I think a daughter. Ronald changed his last name. Seigel is buried in S.D. California and Fred up in Washington state. But I have no idea where Sallie is buried. She did marry a Franklin M. Baker in 1917 and had 2 boys and later married a John Elliot in 1922. After that...nothing. Would appreciate your help in finding Sallie's burial place. Seigels 2nd wife...Anna Gorezen is buried in Okmulgee, OK by her son with Seigel...Jack T. Applegate. Thanks.

addie

Because that's how my branch spells it. When spellings in the US started getting standardized at the beginning of the 19th century, my branch of the family around Hightstown and Cranbury settled on the spelling "Appelget". There is a branch of the family around Morristown that spells the name "Applegit" and another branch in Brooklyn that spells the name "Appelgate".

Interestingly enough, my 3x great grandfather Thomas's certificate to the bar in NJ spells his name "Applegate", while his commission as a judge in NE spells his name "Appelget". And the drawing for his patent for improved cider mills has a handwritten correction from "Appleget" to "Appelget".

Hi Steven,
I have seen you on the net before. I have been researching since 1995. I found a lot of my research from the Ocean County Historical Society and the Monmouth County Historical Society, State of NJ and visiting landmarks and sites. I like to keep my information private. Because I have have paid for some of my information outside of Ancestry. But if you would like to contact me for family tree information that would be fine. Sincerely, Rtdlady

Thank you. My Mom and Dad had Applegates in their family tree, perhaps making them distant cousins. Unfortunately they are deceased. I can tell you they would have found this humorous.
With my Mom's side there is a double Applegate connection because it looks like the children of Applegate sisters married.
My family tree is Sharkey family under Mary Anne Dirck. It is a work in progress. I was a newspaper writer and editor and am enjoying doing this research. (My Dad wrote books)
I so appreciate your considerable help. If you are ever in the Cleveland area, I would love to meet you!
There is some limited discussion of them in "Wlliam Pangburn and His Wife Hannah FitzRandolph: Their Ancestry and Descendants" (1909) by C P McClure. They are part of the Applegate line that settled for a generation in Allegheny Co., PA, and then moved further west--mainly to Harrison Co., IN, but for these ladies and their husbands, Brown Co., OH.

Thank you so much. I did not know you had replied until I started doing more research. Basil W. Applegate has stumped my family for years! My brother even hired a professional geneologist.
I knew from my Dad's brother that he is my gr-gr-grandfather, his daughter Mary Jane is our gr-grandmother. She was first wife of Cornelius O'Donnell, a principal in Cincinnati.
Oddly, we have Applegates on a different side on our maternal side of the family too. These Applegates settled in Georgetown Ohio. Two sisters, Elizabeth (1786-1865) and Alice (1773-1853) children married in this branch in which I am a direct ancestor. They are daughters of William Applegate (1733-1804), son of Benjamin (1685-1753)
Do you have any information on them?

Thank you so very much!

Mary Anne Sharkey Dirck

Bumping my own thread.

I have found quite a bit about these people.

BR1B1 (5D4C7A2) George L Appelgate, b. abt 1848 in NY (1850 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, 17th Ward, 1291/2189 [age 3, birthplace NY]; 1870 US Census, New York, Kings County, 7th Ward, p. 114 [age 23, birthplace NY]; 1875 NY State Census, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 7, p. 61, 358/553 [age 27, birthplace Kings Co., NY]), d. ____ He married on January 11, 1871 (Brooklyn Eagle, November 28, 1891, p. 6) Lilia’s ____, b. October, 1855 in Queens Co., NY (1875 NY State Census, supra [age 20, birthplace Queens Co.,, NY]; 1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn Bor., Ward 25, 2/430, Sheet 7A, 86/143 [October 1855, birthplace NY]. They were divorced. (1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn Bor., Ward 25, 2/430, Sheet 7A, 86/143).

George L was enumerated with his parents and grandparents at Raymond and Myrtle in Brooklyn, NY, in 1850. He was 3 years old. (1850 US Census, supra).

He was still living with his parents in 1870. He was 23, born in NY, and a fireman. (1870 US Census, supra).

George L was living in his own household at 410 Bedford Ave., in Brooklyn, NY, in 1875. George L was 27, born in Kings Co., and a member of the Brooklyn Fire Department. Wife Lillie was 20, born in Queens Co.; and daughter Ellen A was two years and nine months old, and born in Kings Co. (1875 NY State Census, supra).

George L appears in a few articles in the Brooklyn Eagle, mostly about the fire department. The last was an article listing candidates for the state senate. (Brooklyn Eagle, October 9, 1891).

He was listed as an heir to his father’s estate in 1891 (Probate File of William R. Appelgate, Kings Co. (NY), December 7, 1941 [no file number]). He did not receive any specific bequests.

1891 was a bad year for George. Not only did his father die, his wife sued him for divorce.

THE APPLEGATE DIVORCE
---
Counsel moved in the supreme court this morning for alimony and counsel fee in the divorce suit which Mrs. Lillias Applegate has brought against George L. Applegate. The couple were married on January 11, 1871, and have two daughters, 16 and 19 years old, respectively. Mrs. Applegate says that her husband is living with Mrs. Rose, at 332 Livingston street. Mr. Applegate works in the navy yard and gets $25 a week. Mirabeau L. Towns opposed the motion and denied the allegations made by the plaintiff. Justice Bartless reserved his decision.
(Brooklyn Eagle, November 28, 1891, p. 6).

His ex-wife Lillias was enumerated living alone at 522 Van Buren Street in Brooklyn. She was 44, born in NY, and a seamstress. (1900 US Census, NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn Bor., Ward 25, 2/430, Sheet 7A, 86/143).

I have no death date for George L.
I am bumping this old message because I just finished a big research project on this branch.

I'm pretty sure this William was born in about 1820, in Kings Co., NY, and died in Brooklyn in on 12 Nov 1891. I have his probate file, a bunch of census references, and city directories.

If the poster's mother's maiden name was Gilligan, and her grandmother was Mary Ellen born in 1867, then her grandmother was the Nellie Appelgate who married Patrick Gilligan and was one of the executors of her father's estate. Nellie ended up as the guardian of her younger siblings, John, Henry/Harry, and Rebecca.

I've lost track of these folks after about 1905, so if anyone reads this and knows the descendants of this family, I'd love to hear from you. Also, if you want the full documented version of the information I have, I can forward it to you.

I found Sarah in 1900 with granddaughter, Edna Britton (born in MA). Edna was also in 1900 in Boston with Mother Stella (divorced) and sister Bertha. I found them again in 1910 in Somerville, MA with Stella listed as Ercilla. I searched for Ercilla (no last name) born 1867 in NJ. I found her in the 1880 census in Malden, MA
John H. Applegate 39
Sarah L. 39
Ercilla 13
Minns? 8

There is a death record for John H.
Re: Basil W. Applegate

Basil W Applegate, carpenter, appears in the 1850 Census for Cincinnati with his household as follows:

Basil W Applegate, age 32, birthplace NY, carpenter
Mary, age 36, birthplace Ireland
Mary J, age 6, birthplace OH
Martha G (or C), age 4, birthplace OH
Ann E, age 2 mos., birthplace OH.
Catharine Connelly, age 26, birthplace Ireland.

Basil W (various spellings) appears in various Cincinnati city directories throughout the 1850s. His first appearance is as "B. W. Applegate, builder" in the 1849-1850 Williams directory. He does not appear in the 1860 Williams directory or in any of the following editions.

(Note, however, the birthplace of his children in the 1850 Census--Ohio. So even if he is not listed in the city directories, he was living someplace in Ohio).

Here's where things get interesting . . . .

In Shaffer's (competing brand) Cincinnati city directory for 1839-1840, there is a listing for "Applegate, Wilson (NY), Carpr". This person does not reappear in any directory in the 1840s.

Hugh Voress, citing no sources, stated that John Applegate 5A4A1 had a son named Wilson. I tracked down John and a few of his children in the 1850 Census in New York. _Several of them were carpenters_. Voress also states that Wilson, son of John Applegate, married "Irish Mery". Note the name and nationality of Basil W's wife in the 1850 Census.

Also note the approximate birth date of Basil W--1818. This fits right in with the possible siblings of Wilson. The ones we have dates for were born in 1811 (Furman), 1813 (John), and 1822 (Hiram).

I hypothesize that Basil W Applegate is Basil Wilson Applegate. I believe he moved from New York (either Chautaqua Co. or Montgomery Co.) to Cincinnati in about 1849 where he tried to make a living as a carpenter. For unknown reasons he stopped carpentry in Cincinnati (either by not working as a carpenter on his own or by leaving the city) for about a decade. During that time, he had three children in OH. He returned to both carpentry and Cincinnati in 1849. At some point before 1844, he married Mary (probably Connelly).

Further confirmation: In the 1870 Census in Cincinnati (8th Ward, p. 133, there is a Mary Applegate, age 55, born in Ireland, living with a Mary Applegate, age 24. I believe this is the widow of Basil W.

Joseph and Iantha Applegate

I'm SO CLOSE to nailing this one down.

Long version is on my blog; short version here.

Joseph was born in NY in about 1815, d. in NY 6 May 1907. He married Iantha (probably Jarvis). No issue.

Joseph had a brother Josiah H Applegate. He married Catharin "Kate" Louisa _____. By 1870, he resided in San Francisco, CA. He had at least one son Henry.

Based on the land descriptions from when Joseph and Josiah sold land in Brooklyn for the Brooklyn Bridge, I believe their father's name was Josiah. Based on an obituary in the New York Times (Dec 7, 1858), I believe their mother's name was Ann and she married Theophilus Houlton after Josiah.

I strongly suspect Josiah m. Ann is the son of John (Voress No. 5d4d) b. abt 1755 in Piscataway, Middlesex, NJ. He spent a lot of time in NYC during the second half of the 18th century.

Anybody have any clues? Any little tidbits that could tie these folks into the main line?
