Dear Sir,
I can't really help you, but I am also an Appleton descendant and would be very interested if you make any connection to my family.
My mother is Peggy Appleton b.1930, her father Frederick Stephen Appleton b.1893 T. D'Arcy, his father David Appleton b.1860 Little Totham, his father Stephen Appleton b.1824 Toll. Major and finally, his father Edward Appleton b.1796 place unknown, resident T.Major, wife Hannah.
So, we may be related somewhere. I have a list of the descendants of Edward Appleton, plus my family tree and could email these to you. My personal email address is chrismatthews@gts-flexible.co.uk It would be great to make a link to John and Mary, who I am sure are related to Edward Appleton.
Regards
Chris Matthews

Appleton origin

Hi Appletons,
I was researching my own family and came across an article on the Appletons. The article is from The Times, Clay Center, Kansas, Thursday evening, 11 Feb. 1886, Vol. 3, No. 6.
It states:
"Genealogists have found the origin of the Appleton family. It appears that when William of Normandy invaded, conquered, and was crowned King of England in 1066, several of his followers settled in the county of Kent, among whom was a lady of his court named Mahilia d'Appletone, or Mahilia of the apple orchards. From this Norman lady sprang the family of the Appletons, who for eight centuries have maintaned their ground as an ancient family in Kent and the adjacent counties. In 1641 a member of this family, John Appleton, sailed in the Mayflower for the American continent, and from him sprang the family of Appletons in the United States." (end of article)

I hope you can use the info. I am not done with the microfilm so when I go back to use it I will get the call numbers for any of you who want it.

Good luck,
Joan

Frederick George Appleton b. PA 1825

Hi everyone,
I am looking for further information on Frederick George Appleton, born in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania on 12 Feb 1825. Specifically, I am having an awful time tracking down his father. I got a lead from a cousin that his father might be Christopher Appleton, from England, but I can find no real proof on this. Also I have no clue who his mother, or brothers and sisters might have been.
Frederick and his wife Josephine moved to California in about 1856, and their children were born there. Later, the children came to Texas and Frederick and his son Percival bought land in McCulloch County, Texas. I also understand they owned land in other Texas counties at one time. Frederick died on 27 Dec 1892 in Hyde Park, Illinois. He was apparently well remembered in Pennsylvania as I found a short article in a newspaper there mentioning his death. This would have been well after he left Pennsylvania.

Anyway, any information anyone can provide on his parents would be SO appreciated. I have been looking for two years now! (Frederick is my great-great-grandfather)

Thanks!
Leslie Appleton

I don't see how TN could fit in this picture. Almost all records (census and tax lists in CA) list him as D. E. Appleton. A journal names him David in the bio about W. H. Blosser, second husband of Rachel Pullen--D.E.'s wife. D. E. died 1876 and sources say he started as a builder, had a newspaper route, and became a retailer--also named as related to the NY Appletons of the Publishing co. by Daniel Appleton. Family stories from the lady whose tree this is mentions talk of the Appleton who married Longfellow and Appletons starting towns that were named Appleton etc.

Certainly the same family. I was born in 1961 and am most likely your second cousin.

I have heard of Eldredge Appleton and I beleive he is my Grandmother's (Beatrice Appleton Lawrence) brother. I know she had a sister name Elaine. The Appleton's lived in Summit and I believe Frank was their father. I know the house that they grew up in.corner of Wittredge and Essex I believe.

Beatrice Appleton Lawrence Married Frederick Theodore Lawrence jr. and Had four Boys, Fred(my father), Bob, John, and Alan. (They are your mother's first cousins). Between them they had 19 children. Oldest of that crew is about to turn 50 and at least 6 of them have Eldredge or Appleton as a middle name. My Sisters first name was Beatrice.
Fred John and Alan are still alive. They lived in summit. Long Island and then back to Summit. My grandmother died very young, I belive she was 49 and died in 1958.

Right now I am in touch with everyone of my first cousins and many second and third cousins on the Lawrence side. Every one of them lived in Summit at one time or another. Three of the cousins are left in town with nine children. They are seventh genration summit on the Lawrence side and fourth or fifth generation on the Appleton side.

I have an uncle who put togehter a geneology list for the Lawrence/Appleton family. I will look for it this weekend.

I have an original postcard photograph of “Myrtle Appleton, Margie Meck and Edna Meck”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Each of them looks to be about early 20s, and from the type of postcard, this was taken in approx. 1915.

I found Myrtle Appleton, age 29, in the 1920 census for Providence (Lancaster Co.) PA, showing Myrtle was wife of Maris Appleton, age 30. Margie Meck, age 17, and sister Edna Meck, age 18, were in the 1910 census for Providence (Lancaster Co.) PA – so they were all about the same age.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Myrtle Appleton, Margie or Edna Meck.

According to the book "Genealogy of the Appleton Family" by William Sumner Appleton, 1874, she was Alice Maud Appleton Born Sept. 24, 1859, the daughter of William Sturt Appleton and Georgianna ( Louisa Frances Gillis Armistead) Appleton. Georginia was the daughter of Lt. Col. George Armistead. who commanded Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Md. in 1813, where the last battle of 1812 was fought. This battle is remembered because he flew the "Stars and Stripes" that Francis Scott Key was inspired with when he wrote " The Star Spangled Banner". Do You know who she married?

William Appleton died 12 October 1831, Everton, Liverpool

This William Appleton was a West India Merchant importing products from Jamaica into Liverpool. He also owned some sugar plantations in Jamaica. He married a Mary Waite born Jamaica and they had a number of children including a Raynes Waite Appleton born abt 1796 in Jamaica and a Richard Appleton b 1805 in Liverpool. The latter Richard becoming Chaplain of Kirkdale Gaol, Liverpool in about 1838 where he was to stay for some 30 years. I'd be interested if anyone has this family in their family tree and am particularly interested in details of the parents of William Appleton. I believe it's possible they came from Farnworth, near Widnes, Lancashire.
In 1850 Samuel Appleton and his son, William H. lived in Chichester, NH. On today's roads Pembroke and Chichester are less that 11 miles apart.

If all this has any meaning it may be that the great great grandfather of William H. Appleton was Revolutionry War vet Samuel Trickey (b. abt 1748). that his great grandfather was Samuel Trickey (b. abt 1778), that his grandfather was Robert Trickey (b. abt. 1800) and that his father was Samuel Trickey. That would make him the first of his line to be born with the Appleton surname; although his father and grandfather were legally Appletons since 1831.

I do hope no one finds the suggestion disturbing. Some in the nineteenth century found the name uncomfortable and changed it to Milton, Harvey, Lowell, Tracy, Johnson and Trakey as well.

In Dover, a Sea Captain named Charles Trickey (who didn't like his name) deeded land for a road to the town. His one stipulatiom was that it be called Trakey St., which it still is today.

But, by whatever name, those who changed the name all descend from Thomas Trickey (b. abt. 1614) who arrived in Dover with his brother, Francis in about 1637. Francis did not pass on the name because his one son died unmarried.

Al

I may be throwing you a genealogical curve. In July of 1831 the New Hampshire Legislature granted a name change to the family of Robert Trickey of Allenstown, NH.

The last name given in the Act was that of Samuel Trickey whose resdence at the time was given as Pembroke. The name was changed to Appleton.

Act of 02 July, 1831

Thank you for the reply! My grandfather's sister was Beatrice Appleton. His name was Eldrege Appleton, the youngest son. Does that ring a bell at all? I have a photo of the children (Beatrice, Elaine, Herbert and Eldredge "El" as children/teens). I was given Beatrice as my middle name. I understand much of the family moved from Summit the Pacific Palisades, CA. My mother, Elaine (middle daughter of El's), was born there and then she move with her parents (margaret Dumont and El Appleton)to Portland, OR.
