My understanding is that Joseph H. and his wife Dora/Dorothy (née Markum/Markham) _were_ the parents of Markham R. (b. 1916, d. 1991) and Merlin J. (b. 1918, d. 1977) Apps. About four years ago, I exchanged e-mails with a Jim Apps, who I believe lived in Missouri - if not you, then probably a cousin of yours. I sent him a package of information outlining what I knew about the family, both in Michigan and, prior to that, in Cornwall, England.

I beleive that Joseph H. Apps was my grandfather. My father was Merlin Joseph Apps. I don't know a lot about the Apps family in michigan. I just started investigating my family tree.

Richard Apps b 1816 was my great-great-grandfather and would be interested in any information you have on him and his son John (my great-grandfather) whose grave I have visited in Swansea. Am very keen to find out how and when they came to Tasmania. Have found a shipping record which lists Richard, Jenny and children John and Eleanor. Was Winifred also known as Jenny? I believe that Richard remarried Margaret Ure (from Tasmanian pioneer records) who is the mother of Eliza.

My ancestors William Apps and Philadelphia Foots left Brede, Sussex england in 1839 and headed to Australia.

I have traced back to Richard Apps 1644.

I dont have Apps connections in the UK after 1890.

I see you are on the search for a Charles and William Apps.

I have been researching my APPS family and have found that they started in Boxgrove. Sussex. I am also searching for 2 uncles who possibly went to Canada in around 1901 and a possible cousin called Frank also from the Sussex area.

I am still searching for my grandfathers 2 brothers who we think sailed to Canada around 1901. their names are Edward Frederick and Charles William plus a possible cousin went with them called Frank.

My great-great-grandfather was Richard Apps who migrated to Tasmania in about 1853 with Winifred/Jenny and son John (great-grandfather) and daughter Eleanor. A brother John also came but haven't been able to find a shipping record for him. Presume one of the siblings of Richard and John is your relative?

Henry was my 2nd great grandfather
Frances apps was my 2nd grand aunt.

Ralph Apps is my husbands 3 x Great Grandfather. I knew about John & Hannah but not that he was a mariner. I cannot seem to find anything more on John.

My husband descends from Isabella via Sarah Jane (father unknown) and then Olga (father Sarah's 2nd husband John Thomas Arkley).

Please let me know if you would like any more info on this part of the line.

Saw your posting on message board and wonder if we are the same Apps family. My grandfather was Charles Apps born Sittingbourne January 11, 1884 parents James Apps (I think) and Emma Hunt. He came to Canada and married Mabel Sellen before enlisting in Canadian Army and being killed at Vimy 1918. Hope you get this message.

Apps Smith

Can someone tell me how I go about researching someone who seems to have a hyphinated surname?

I can find Edward Apps Smith b:1830 in the later census but while he was younger it seems he didn't go by Apps Smith, I have no clue as to who his parents were so I don't know where to start searching.

Was it normal for people back then to keep changing their place of birth? In one census it states Fulham and in another it states Brompton, I know it is the same person because he was my Ggreat grandmothers first husband & her details never changed at all, other than her last name that is, one census she's Apps Smith and in another she is Smith, but it is undoubtedly her.

I will take heed of any ideas on hyphinated name searching, if anybody has some.

there was a Henry John P Apps, born 1891 Boorowa, NSW (NSW birth Reg 9074/1891). I think this may be the one you want.

He was the son of Thomas Apps (1849-1906) and Eliza Jane Croker (1850? - 1918).

Mary Apps b 1762 in Sussex

I am researching Mary Apps, b. 1762 in Sedlescombe, Sussex. I do not know her parents names.
She married Thomas Cooke in 1789. She was buried in Ewhurst, Sussex as Mary Cooke in 1829. Beyond this i have no information. She is the first Apps family member to appear in my tree and i would love to trace the line back as far as i can go. If anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.

Not sure if I had ever answered your posting but, your Mary Anne is in my line I don`t have any info on her except when she was born 1861 East Molesey, her father was Charles married to Rebecca who was the son of Henry born 1794 married Mary Taylor this Henry was a brother to my 3xgrgrandfather James Happs mother Elizabeth Apps.James was the first with the new spelling in my line.I do have more info on other siblings and would gladly share what I have with you.

William Apps b. 1793/4 Burstow, Surrey

Can anyone help me with the record of the birth/baptism of William Apps b.1793/4 so that I can determine who his parents were. He married Philadelphia Denman at Worth Parish church on 25 Nov 1822. Both were of Copthorne in the parish of Worth. The family appear in the 1841 and 1851 censuses at Copthorne Bank, Burstow, Surrey and he gives his place of birth as Burstow, Surrey. I strongly suspect he was son of James Apps and Sarah Constable of Burstow but can find no proof.

There is a record of a marriage of Josiah EPPS to Ann Dowrick 13 Jan 1717 at Fowey, Cornwall. The record gives his residence as Shoreham, Co Sussex. They could be the parents of Josiah Apps mar 1749. However there are also earlier records of the name EPPS in Cornwall. The surnames Epps and Apps originate from Kent and Sussex and surname studies state that each is a variant of the other as they can sound alike. It seems that Josiah Epps/Apps senior was not the first Epps or Apps to sail from Kent or Sussex to Cornwall to start the Cornwall branch.

I have been resarching the Apps surname for a few years, having traced my own branch back to 1619 in the Hastings area. I have tried to find out where the cornwall branch started, but as you say Josiah is only a guess. It could be they came from the Ewhurst area of sussex only because there were a number of APSE mentioned in the 1600's.

I haven't checked this board for a while, and was very interested to see an estimated year of birth (1729) provided for Josiah Sr.

I'm curious to know how you arrived at this date; was it just an assumption that Josiah married at age 20? Or do you have a burial record or MI which gives his year of death and age? Or, better still, have you found a possible christening record somewhere?

Josiah's marriage to Loveday Thomas is the earliest record I've found of the Apps name in Cornwall, although my searches have been limited to online sources (as I live in Canada, a visit to the records office is impractical). I picture Josiah as having been born in SE England (where most of the Apps families were living at that time) and coming to Cornwall as a young man, possibly a sailor. Unfortunately I haven't seen any references for a Josiah Apps baptism anywhere in the country in a suitable time frame (e.g., 1700-1730), so it'll all just supposition for now.

Josiah was my 5xg-grandfather and I'd love to be able to pursue this line back further; if you can shed any light regarding his year of birth, that would be most appreciated.
