My grandfather has recently passed away and he was Modrins Apsitis. He never told his family anything about his past, but he was on the first boat of refugees into australia post-war in 1947. He was born on Nov 10 1927, but where he was born we're unsure. He was very well educated and spoke Latvian, German, Russian and English fluently. His family had a large estate in eastern Latvia and we know his father was a lawyer and was most likely the minister for justice (but there are few facts available to back this up). We've recently found his mother was an Estonian academic and published works. We also know his father re-married a Swedish woman at somepoint (perhaps because his mother died?)and that he didn't get along with his step-sisters. I know there aren't very many Apsitis' about, but do you know if perhaps your Gust is a relative of mine? We have some of grendad's journal, but they're mostly in Latvian - so until we find a Latvian linguist their contents will remain a mystery. Any info you know of would be most welcome.
