Aquila originates from Italy and was originally L'Aquila based on a city in central Italy. The Godfather movie showed that when immigrants came to the states, they were often forced to drop thier last name and take on the name of the area they were from. This was actually quite true. Aquila is also a constallation of an eagle. Aquila means Golden eagle.

My great granfather, Vincenzo "Jimmy" Aquila came from italy and was raised in brooklyn NY. My grandfather, father and myself carry the name Vincent Aquila. My father is still alive and knows many family members in ny/nj area. As a child growing up, I was not able to meet them due to the nature of business. I have gathered over the years that Provenzano's are cousins and my grandfather worked for Tony Pro after wwII till he opened a bar in NJ. Anyway, I do not know much of our history but can find out more if you'd like. Good luck in your endeavors.

Jimmy

I am looking for others that are related to Rocco Aquila-east coast? He came with wife Venera in 1907 and Father:Francisco & Mom: Filomina-baby Rosaria died at sea and was thrown overboard=family sent back to Italy.Rocco & Venera stayed.Other children returned later from that tragic voyage.Does this story sound familiar? Older Italian ladies in family said Filomina "was crazy lady" but turns out baby was sick & died at sea. You may have heard this story in your family history.Rocco's brother Guiseppe was already in Connecticut when they arrived.

Spanish, no. Originally, the Bible: Aquilla and Priscilla. Have found in 19th century Ireland. Was my paternal grandfather's given name, which he shortened to Quilla. Unconnected, but of interest, Quechuan (S. America) for "moon".

Family name: Sumpter Quilla Porter. Anyone with info concerning either of given names, please respond.
