I have a scanned copy of a marriage certificate Josef Antonio Arabi and Rita Perez, confirming his birth and parentage from Mallorca and hers from Tenerife.

I know of the Islenoes coming from the Canaries at this time, but have encountered no others from Mallorca.
The Baleric Islands would be a natural "pit stop" in the Mediteranian. I know the Moors invaded Spain once, the Islands would naturally be a "melting pot" with French, Italian, Spanish & Lebanese/Arabs sailors, fishermaen, tradesmen or soldiers.

According to info I received several years ago, through work by Curless & Jessie Arabie: The Arabie name was traced back to Joseph Antonio Araby (D'Araby) - b. about 1756, died 1819 in LaFourche, LA from Majorca (Baleric Islands in the Mediteranian Sea) who married Rita Henriette Perez from the Canary Islands. I'm from the line of their son, Michel (CristoPaolo/Miguel - written both ways) Araby.

I was told that Arabie was French, but in doing the research, Arabie/Arabi/Araby comes from many different places, Spain, Argentina, Peru, Europe. I have traced my line back to Spain. I have many French-Candian ancestors and geographically, French is not out of the picture. In my research, I have found a reference to the name originally coming from Kuwait (still trying to verify that!). In French, the name translates to "Saudi" or the other variation L'Arabie, "The Saudi". I would love to hear other's thoughts on this.

Dear Sir,I am looking for my cousin Joyce [Bickford]Arabie. She was born in Vermont, her family moved to Texas and she has 6 other sisters,2 brothers. One sister Dianne died in Vt. at 7yrs.old.Her oldest sisters Gloria Sallie live in Georgia. Her youngest sister Marsha lives in Washington. So do her 2 brothers John David. Her sisters Mary Linda were adopted by a Grimes family from Vidor,Texas or Beaumont,Texas, they had two older girls. They said Joyce was adopted by an Arabie family,Mothers name was Ida,don't no the dads name. All I know that they said the Arabie family were Jehovah Witnesses?? Joyce was born,Joyce Ann Bickford,in North Troy,Vermont. She was 4yrs of age when her folks had to give her up for adoption. Her mother's name is Elsie{Baird}Bickford,my Mom's sister, her fathers name is Gardner Bickford,he passed away in Washington in 1991.Her mom had a stroke and moved with her oldest daughter to Georgia. The last known place Gloria knew Joyce lived was La.I saw this on my computer and thought I would write.I know people would rather leave things alone, but the last time I saw her I was 14yrs.old.I'm 55yrs.old and thought I would try to find my cousins. They lived such a hard life in Vermont, all 7 girls and 1 boy and hardly nothing to eat and only the clothes my mom made them or we handed down to them.I wonder what she looks like, any children or even if she's married???If you have anything on her or know of her,I'd be glad if you would e-mail me about her and what she looks like. Sincerely,Gloria Thomas of Orleans,Vermont

If not try writing to: Curless A. Arabie is suppose to be putting together a book about "Arabie". He can be contacted at: 1720 17th Street
Lake Charles, LA 70601
(337)477-5196
Hope this info helps all those looking for more info on the Arabie family tree.
