Richard, I have been to this website and I already have a lot on Apolonaria Belarde / Velarde (my gg grandmother)and her family line. It is her husband, Procopius Aragon, my gggrandfather that I can't find info on. Thanks for your message. I appreciate it.

I don't think Procopius and his family were originally from the Las Vegas, Anton Chico area. That is probably why I haven't found anything in church records other than when he married Aplonaria in Las Vegas. Thanks again.

Lucy

Check out this record that is posted with the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center in Pedigree Database [http://www.hgrc-nm.org/surnames/GNMPD.html/d0126/g0012658.ht...] Paste the link in your browser and when the page opens up scroll down to "Apolinaria Velarde." This person certainly fits the timeline you are building. Let me know what you think. Certainly having come from the main church parish in Las Vegas, NM, I think that this is significant to your search.
Hi,
I have ordered this Copyright book (New Mexico San Buenaventura de Cochiti Church) to hopefully find my G-G-Grandmother baptism for Indian Tribe, no such luck; but that doesn’t mean it was a waste of money, because maybe your relative is in it. The date extends from 1736-1873. So I’ll do a look up in this book for you. It has 80 Aragon Families listed.

I am still looking for ancestors of Procopius Aragon from the Anton Chico, Las Vegas area. Procopius and his wife Apolinaria Belarde had several children. I have info on Apolinaria and of their children, but nothing on Procopius Aragon's parents or siblings. Do you know if your grandfather had a relative by this name? Contact me if you know any of the above mentioned names.

Lucy

I have also been researching my great-grandfather who was J. Procopius Aragon. (1858) I have not been able to find out names of his parents and family or where they lived. Thanks to David I know that they were not of the same Aragon family in Anton Chico as his, however, they did live in Anton Chico. I am not sure if the J was for Jose Procopius. He married Apolinarius Velarde (b.1861)or Belarde, daughter of Antonio Belarde and Maria Librada Martin from the Las Vegas, NM area. (married 1875) They had 7 or more children. Miguela (1977)my grandmother who married Santiago Ortega; they lived in Anton Chico.

The others were Domingo, Martu, Jose Eustaquio, Amodita, Celestina, Juana. (Years of birth of children 1877 to 1896)

I have also found that Procopius and family moved around a lot according to the US Census found. I discovered that he was an Express Carrier and Retail Dealer which might be why they moved so much. His name appears in a NM business guide. I also had a contact from Spain who was also researching Procopius and had his and family names and had traced him somehow to the generation of Catherine de Aragon, 1st wife of Henry the VIII. I have since been searching for informtion on Procopius family line to see where how far back it takes me, but have had no luck.

If you have any information on this Aragon lineage that ties Procopius to the Las Vegas, Anton Chico or other NM Aragon family please contact me.

It is very possible that not all Aragons, like not all Lucero's etc are related. Some of the Native Indian slaves the Spaniards had took their owners surnames as did the slaves in the South. I know this happened with the Ortega surname.

I really enjoy reading these message boards and have made some good contacts since 2000. Thanks!

Lucy

Re: Margarita Aragon born abt 1878

Hi,

Well, I tried some deductive reasoning. I took the information you gave me. Pedro b. abt. 1855 residing in Valencia and Clara, no last name with certain children.

I found the 1880 census that you must have seen which gave his approximate birth year.

I checked the baptismal and marriage books I have for the area, but unfortunately, I didn't find either of them there. Most of the records I have at home are pre-1850.

Then I went to the 1870 census of Valencia and found what I thought MIGHT be the correct families.

I don't have any corroborating evidence, so yes, these are just "hints".
What you really need is baptismal records. If you can get a copy of the baptismal records for that area and time you might get lucky.

The reason I chose those particular families lies in the area where the original find in 1880 was and the other families near by. I looked for Clara Brito in 1870 with a parent and they also lived in the approximate area. Listed ages and birth years of children (and adults) are quite often wrong on census reports. If Clara was 11 in 1870 that would have made her about 21 in 1880.

I also checked "Roots, Ltd." a record of pre-nuptial investigations, but again did not find these families. I have copies of the Aragons, but not the Brito's.

What records do you have access to? If you are in Albuquerque the Special Collections Library on Central at Edith has all the information, some in book form and some on microfilm (Roots, Ltd. is book and/or microfiche). If you are near a Family History Library they may or may not have what you need in their regular inventory, but it is all available on microfilm. I love having the books that have transcribed records, but that is an expense that not everyone wants to make.

Hope this helps.
Martha

I have seen on other message boards messages from Antoinette searching for ancestors of Manuel Aragon and Esculastica, her grandparents. She is a close cousin because Esculastica was my great aunt. I am frustrated because I don't know how to reach her. I am a member of Ancestry only.

Rachel also is related. She is searching family of Elijio Aragon and Elijio and my grandfather Sisto were siblings. Again, can't reach her. My email is jlewis2000@comcast.net if anyone knows them.

I have been in touch with Susan--are you in touch with her?

I was saddened by Frank and Annette's passing.
