Hola Rosel,

Saludos
Iliana

Hello, Stephanie,

From what you have told me, you are probably descended from the Arango family that emigrated to Cuba in the 1600s. At least, it doesn't appear that our families are closely related, although from what my father told me ALL people with the Arango surname are related if you go back far enough.

My grandparents went to La Habana in the late 1800s from Spain. They don't have Cuban ancestry.

Thank you for contacting me. And good luck with your search. Let me suggest that you contact the Hispanic Genealogical Society of New York. They are actively helping people of Hispanic origins. I was involved with them for quite sometime, until it became obvious that I needed to work in Spain. Here's their URL: Tell them that Abuelita Xana sent you --

http://www.hispanicgenealogy.com/01_top.htm

Best wishes,
Xana Hansen

Re: Arango brothers in Cuba - early 1900's - more info

We have discovered that the parents of Dionisio Arango Gonzalez were Pedro Arango and Rosa Gonzales. The parents of Casilda Garcia Cuervo were Jose Garcia and Ana Cuervo. We do not yet know their birth dates or death dates.

The Census of Pravia, shows an Arango family in Salamir in 1801. It lists Pedro Arango and his sons Nicolas, Pedro and Alonso, hidalgos. It is possible that this Pedro and the Pedro of our family are one and the same, but there is no way of proving it, as yet.

The census also lists Diego Cuervo Arango and his sons, Pedro, Juan, and Jose, hidalgos. It is possible that these are close relatives of Ana Cuervo, but again, as the census does not list the females int he family, we have no positive connection.

The records of the concejo of Cudillero, of which Salamir is a part, begin in 1870. The family was all baptized, married and buried in the church of San Martin de Luina, but the records of this church were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.

We have also received a message from the descendants of Pedro Arango Garcia. He died in Cardenas, Matanzas, Cuba abt 1910. He was the owner of a freight business there. According to his grandson, there was only one Arango family in all of Cardenas, and that was Pedro's.

At this time, we are writing a book about the descendants of Dionisio Arango Gonzalez and would very much welcome additional information from any of his descendants.

The attached photo is of my grandfather, Candido Arango Garcia, born in Salamir in 1866.

Saludos,
Xana Arango Hansen
Longmont, Colorado
