William and Anna Davis Adoption of Lula Mae Arbuckle

I believe that I could be a decendant of James Arbuckle. Here is my story and I was hoping someone could help confirm the relation or shed some light on this mystery.

My Grandmother was Mary Arbuckle Grimes DiGangi. She was born Lula Mae Arbuckle on April 12, 1902 in Johnson County, Indiana; we believe this but do not have solid birth documentation.

Her father would have been Jesse H. Arbuckle, Son of Edward Arbuckle and Missouri Vantreese, Grandson of James Arbuckle and Henrietta Louise Spaugh.

Her mother was Louisa Knapp. When Louisa died in 1905 Jesse gave his two girls, Lula Mae and Pearl, up for adoption to the Frances Comfort Orphanage in Bartholomew County, Indiana. The orphanage is no longer in exisitence and we are unable to locate paperwork from them. They also had two sons Earl and Omar. We are unsure of what happened to the boys and are waiting to hear from Bartholomew County, Indiana on records. We know Jesse remarried and commited biogmy and was put in prison.

My Grandmother "Lula Mae Arbuckle" was first adopted by William and Anna Davis also of Bartholomew County, Indiana, but we do not have those adoption papers which could be the true link to your Arbuckle family. The Davis' relocated to Champaign, Illinois and Lula Mae was taken from the Davis' in 1908 (I have those papers just not the adoption papers) due to extreme abuse. She was again adopted to Paul and Myrtle Marshky in 1909 in Champaign, Illinois where she was raised.

We do know the connection to Champaign, Illinois because the Davis' brought her there and the Marshky's lived there, and we do know that there seems to be a huge connection to Indiana with those folks. My Grandmother always told me she was born in Indiana and was put into an Orphanage because her mother died. This is what she must have been told as a young child. There seems to be so many circumstantial elements that make us believe Jesse Arbuckle was her father, we are just not 100% sure.

Would anyone out there have information that might help us identify that our Grandmother Mary Arbuckle Grimes DiGangi is really the Lula Mae Arbuckle of Jesse and Louisa Knapp Arbuckle? I would appreciate anything you may know or advise you may have for our continued search with this line of Arbuckle family.

Re: Nancy Arbuckle line

Nancy, James Arbuckle married only twice. First to Margaret Thompson and two years after her death he married Rachel Gilmore. I believe that Gilmore may have been her last name from a previous marriage, and between them they had only the one son, James. Rachel was not a nice person and James left her and he returned to Greenbrier County to live with his daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Henry Hunter.
In an article found on the Internet in August, 2004 I find the following: "First Settlement in Turkey Cove" (this is information from Wise County, Virginia and perhaps part of Russell County, VA) ............................In April 1775 or 1776, Jeptha Massey, along with his brother-in-law, Thomas Sowards, made a settlement on this same land on a pre-emption for 1000 acres in Turkey Cove and they were also granted a warrant by the Land Commissioners of Washington County in 1781. Massey who was granted the warrant for this land actually lived on it, as did Sowards, built a cabin, cleared land, planted corn, cabbage, peach stones and apple seeds, but were driven out by the Indians in June, 1776, although they returned after Col. William Christian' Cherokee Campaign ended in the fall of that year. Jeptha Massey sold his warrant sometime between 1777 and 1779 to one James Arbuckle who moved his family into the cove and occupied the Massey cabin at the Sinking Springs. Marital trouble began between James Arbuckle and his wife, Rachel, and he left her, going to Greenbrier County, West Virginia (then Virginia) where he died at the home of Henry Hunter in April, 1783. Rachel continued to live on in the Turkey Cove and with Jeptha Massey, the cause of separation from her husband, at a place called "Rachael's Cabin." She was still living here in 1780 when Vincent Hobbs went to the Turkey Cove to make a settlement and he said she seemed very angry that he trespassed upon her land, which she claimed by Massey's settlement right. On October 12, 1781, Rachael Arbuckle sold the land to William and Robert Davis and Alexander Wiley of Wythe County, having either her son, James, who was 14 or 15 years old, or one Joseph Cury forge the "X" for her husband's signature. James Arbuckle, Jr., who was born in 1766 or'67, stated in Jefferson County, Indiana on March 20, 1820 that Cury made the "X" mark................ the article goes on to say - The Davis brothers, William and Robert and Alexander Wiley used the Arbuckle land to pasture livestock, and did not reside upon it, as did James Thompson who owned the large tract upon which Capitan Vincent Hobbs settled with his family in 1780. Thomposn, who lived at the Townhouse in Chilhowie was a son-in-law of Col. Evan Shelby and had herdsmen who tended his and Shelby's cattle on the Turkey Cove land. These two land grants of McGaughy's and Massey's were for the same tract of land caused two lawsuits in Chancery Court of both Wythe and Augusta Counties, the first being Simon Ely vs Davis and the second in Wythe being between the heirs of James Arbuckle vs Davis and Wiley. Who was this James Arbuckle, Sr? He came into Augusta County, Virginia around 1745. He had a wife and two sons, Matthew and Thomas Arbuckle. He was serving in the militia prior to April 21, 1759 with the two sons serving as their father's servants. After the death of his first wife, James Arbuckle, Sr., married the above mentioned wife, Rachael, on January 11, 1762 and by her had at least one son, the James Arbuckle, Jr, heretofore mentioned. Matthew Arbuckle, son of James, Sr., by his first wife, was the famed Captain Matthew Arbuckle on James River who was in command at the murder of the Indian Chief Cornstalk. Matthew and his wife, Frances, who after his death in Greenbrier County, in 1781, married a man named Welch, had at least two sons, Charles and John Arbuckle.

Thompson Grant Arbuckle was my Great-Grandfather. Harry was my Grandfather. He had two sons, James Grant & Robert William, both deceased. You can contact me at nrarbuckle@yahoo.com. All my records are in storage right now, but I will be getting things situated in about a month. Would love to help or receive any information you have. Just a note, my Arbuckle ancestors came from Lanarkshire County, Scotland & arrived in America in late 1816 or early 1817.
Do you know what county in Scotland. My family & a Virginia family all came from the county of Lanarkshire. My bunch was here in late 1816 or early 1817, but I can go back farther. The Virginia bunch was here prior to the Revolutionary War. You can e-mail me at "nrarbuckle@yahoo.com" if you want. Right now all my records are in storage, but in about a month I will have things situated. Good luck, Nikki Arbuckle

That makes me a pretty distant relative, however, my mother (a Tucker)was born and raised in Howard and Moline, KS and had many relatives in Grenola. I still visit as often as I can and have obits, funeral cards, etc. as well as a photo of a picture of Wiley and his dray wagon that is in the Grenola museum.

I am trying to find any information on the death of Archibald Arbuckle, born about 1774 in Northern Ireland. He was the father of Margaret Arbuckle, w/o George Clark. Both George and Margaret died in Illinois. However, I've run across one source that suggests that Archibald died about 1840 in or near Warsaw, Hancock, IL. Does anyone have any information on the death of this Archibald Arbuckle?

This is an old thread, but I just found it! I'm researching the Philadelphia Achibald Arbuckel/Arbuckle family. Happy to share what I have - civil war records from the National Archives, etc. Particularly interested in whether he had two wives as there is a break between older children - starting with Sarah b. 1834(my ancestor) who married Samuel Hopkins in 1855.... and John, Lindsay and Margaret the youngest. Also interested in where you found the burial listings for American Mechanics Cemetery.

Hi - thanks for the quick reply. Samuel Hopkins married Sarah Arbuckel in 1855. These are my 2great parents. They had four children - three before the civil war - one after. The one after was named Archibald Arbuckel Hopkins. Archibald A. died in Civil War at Pine Mt. GA. I have xeroxs of his actual enlistment, war records, widow's pension etc. that I obtained at the National Archives a number of years ago. Samuel ended up at the Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio. He died there in 1910. Have his info also if you would like that.

As for Major - he is on the 1850 Census under the Arbuckle name; but on the 1860 census he is listed with the Arbuckle's but with the last name of Whitesides. It also appears that he married one of the Arbuckle girls - Mary. I just recently found him under Civil War website. He fought in the same co. as Samuel Hopkins, but died.

How did you original find that the Arbuckles' were buried at the American Mechanics Cemetery? I didn't have that or dates of death for any one other than Sarah.

Also there is a mystery maybe you have solved about Archibald's wife(s). She is listed as Margaret in the 1850 census and continues to be listed as such in subsequent census. However, when applying for a widow's pension she lists 11 January 1846 as their marriage date. This would mean that there probably was a first marriage as Sarah was born in 1834 and there are four other children also born before the marriage date. Do you have any info?

Happy to share more details I might have.

Sorry about that, I must have been typing too fast. They had a key (meaning hide my e-mail address) over my contact info, I have fixed the problem. You may want to do the same. You have to go in and change your profile so others can see your e-mail address too.
So, since I personally remember all of Chuck's kids and I know Allen really well, you must be one of Frankie and Harold's girls.
I'm really glad to hear from you.
Anyway, click on my contact info and e-mail me, and I will send you an invitation to join (Free) my MYFAMILY.com site.
I have posted most of the pictures in my possession and am inputting (gradually as there is alot) my Arbuckle info.
I had a full family tree put together, up to Joseph, but it is locked in my old computer.
I have not proven yet, but have connected (through several allies and her sibs) that OUR Joseph m. Sarah Sterret/Sterrit who was the daughter of Alexander Sterrit. I'm confident enough in this connection, that she was at the very least his 2nd wife. I am claiming her as his wife until I find proof otherwise.
My instincts tell me that his first wife was either a Margaret of Isabella.
As for his father, this is really a sticking point. Joseph has proven very elusive, and I've not been able to connect him to anyone or anywhere definitely at any time before 1797 when he went to Slippery Rock and bought property. He's noted as an "Early Settler" in Beaver County PA History in 1802 and in census 1800 after that, no more mention of him until he died in 1808. Making it really difficult to pinpoint a dad.
I have tons of loose info with no pinpoint on them being our Joseph for sure (there's another Joseph who m. Catherine Guy living in PA at the same time he shows up).
Very frustrating.
E-mail me and I'll send you that website info and what I have on paper copy for Joseph
Talk soon,
Barb
