Robert Archibald and Nancy Hall of Pennsylvania

I am looking for information on Robert Archibald, b 1776 in Pennsylvania, d Aug 1859 in Iowa, m Nancy Hall. They had 8 children, Polly, David, Benjamin, Margaret, Sarah, Jane, Robert and Elizabeth. The information I am looking for the most is Robert's parents and dates and Nancy's too if possible.

Hay cuz, I hope you do know that in the ID,UT, WY area is one of the largest Archibald clans an they have yearly reunions mostly in the ID Boise area? Not been to one in a while. stayed in the WA region since 77 when I got out of the Militart Now I live in Spokane..

My family comes from Fife, Scotland.

William and Sophia Easton King Archibald had 8 children and moved to Cle Elum, Washington in 1913. Some of the children were already married and they and their children came aroudn 1920.

Children are Janet (Will), William, Isabella (Simpson), Mary (Goddard), Sophia (looking for more info), Alicson/Alice/Allison (Little), Richard, and Robert.

I understand this is a very old post but hope you are still here.

I have been working on the family of William and Sophia Easton King Archibald for awhile.

Yes Janet married John Will. He immigrated in 1919 and she followed in 1920 with the kids. John Jr, Sophia (Gufler), and Barbara (Stoves). I have John Jr's naturalization papers and the Ships manifests when they came over. As well as their marriage licenses from Kittitas County Washington.

I am the Great Granddaughter of Janet's sister Mary Archibald Goddard. You can find me at facebook.com/ashkins529 we are in the very very rough planning stage of a Descendants of William and Sophia family Reunion for June 2010.

Children of William Archibald (born 1754) and Margaret Gowens (born 1756): #1 Catharine born at Largo, Fife 2 Nov 1779, chr. 7 Nov 1779, died before 1789. #2 William born at Largo, Fife 21 Mar 1781, chr. 25 Mar 1781, married 8 Sep 1804 to Isabel Archibald, Wm died 13 Oct 1828. #3 James born at Largo, Fife 17 Jun 1783, chr. 22 Jun 1783. #4 Andrew born at Largo, Fife 7 Nov 1784, chr. 7 Nov 1784. #5 Catharine chr. at Dysart, Fife 2 Aug 1789. #6 Thomas chr. at Dysart, Fife 25 May 1794. NOTE: There is a 5-year gap between Andrew and Catherine, and also between Catherine and Thomas. I would suspect there are other children. Yes sorry I got my dates muddled up. I got the details of Margaret's parents at Edinburgh last week, but could not find any details on William's. That is about as far back as I can go unfortunately until I find his parents. It is the same couple though and would love details of their children as well. Thank you again for your reply

There is a William Archibald (born 1754) who married Margaret Gowens (born 1756) and they were from Kilconquhar. Is that the couple you were asking about? I don't know William's parents, but Margaret Gowen's parents were James Gowen and Catherine Fraser.

I am wondering if there is anyone out there with the details of any children and the parents of a William Archibald (1794)who married Margaret Gowen from Kilconquhar. This is a branch of my husband's tree that I know very little about however more recent descendents of these two people lived or live in and around the Lanarkshire area. Would appreciate any information.

My husbands family are related to Archibalds in Lanarkshire, who all served in the coal mining industry here. His grandmother was an Annie Archibald, whose father George Archibald married Mary Jane Harkins and he was in mining as well. His father George Snr born 1843 was a coal miner and as far as I am aware, his father Thomas Archibald was a Coal miner in Tranent, East Lothian. If this of any help to you please contact me. My tree is on genes reunited although I have just started researching the Archibald side of the family. My husband surname is Grieve.

I forgot to add that my husband also has Archibald's that come down from the other side, too...

John Archibald (d.1728), John Archibald, Samuel Archibald, Matthew Archibald, Agnes Archibald McCurdy, Matthew Archibald McCurdy*, James McCurdy**, William David McCurdy***, Edward Percy McCurdy, Living McCurdy Taylor.

* Note Matthew A. McCurdy was married to an Elizabeth Archibald...haven't traced her yet.

** Note James McCurdy was married to an Amelia Janet Archibald...haven't traced her yet either.

***Note William David McCurdy was married to Laura Reid, who is also descended from the John(d 1728)Archibald above and it is her line mentioned in the previous post.

Now you can see why I get confused.

I have been trying to flesh out my husband's Archibald line. In looking at Jennie Reid's Musquodoboit Pioneers book online, there seems to be an inconsistency in what I have in my records to date. I could be screwed up but thought someone here could clear it up.

In her book, on page 16, Jennie Reid lists the descendants of Samuel Archibald (husband of Eleanor Taylor) - The list of people that she has, I have down as the children of Samuel's first son, Matthew - husband of Janet Fisher.

That is where Samuel Fisher Archibald (husband of Olivia Scott) presumably got his middle name...from Mom. Matthew and Janet had another son, among their 12 children, named Matthew Taylor Archibald - also referred to as "Good Matthew." He was married to Jane Guild.

Do I have the generations blended and knotted up? Does anyone out there have a basic tree that I could look at to determine if and where I went wrong?

I *think* my husband is descended via:
John Archibald (d.1728),John Archibald,Samuel Archibald, Matthew Archibald,"Good" Matthew Archibald,William Guild Archibald,Mary Ann Archibald Reid, Laura Reid,Edward Percy McCurdy,Living McCurdy Taylor (husband's Mom).

Do you happen to know where in MA Robert was born. Massachusetts records are pretty good at that point. I live in Pittsfield MA and our local library is excellent in local history.

No I even tried requesting the pension record from the National Archives but there was nothing. I read your post about Warren County and that may be some of the problem. Of course with New York vital records I was never able to find proof of David's parentage other than the fact that they are buried together in Salem. If you have any other information about this family I would love to know more.

Lauren, that depends on who your Archibald ancestors were. Not all Archibald families were coalminers; but the ones who were, remained coalminers for generations.

Hi i haven't been doing my tree long but i do have Archibalds. Andrew Archibald married Janet Steel, their son George Archibald(1793c) married Margaret Wilson(1794-1874) their son William Archibald(1823) married Janet Laing(1819-1890) and their daughter Janet Archibald(1851) married William smith (i think but i cant find a cert) and had Agnes Smith(1888) my Great grandmother. are these any good to anyone? I've traced my Archibalds back to David, who married Isabel Robertson in Newton Midlothian 1814. I believe he actually married 3 times,Isabel being the second wife. Their daughter, Marion m. Abraham Reid (a miner), and their daughter, Isabella, married my gg'father, James Elliott, who was also a miner. David's other chn. from this marriage were Violette(1815-Marion's twin), William(1817) and David (1819).

Thanks for replying, I'd given up hope! Have you found Isabella Reid's death/burial details ? I know she remarried 1889(Michael Rutherford) but I've lost her there, although I found James Elliott buried @ Sandgate. With Elliotts I found James in the 1851 census Scotland and (possibly) the 1841 census (Manchester, but no proof it's him) - nothing in Ireland. How are you going with him?

I am searching for the descendants of the Late George Archibald who was married to Margot (surname unknown) who was a beauty queen in Belgium before meeting and marrying George during World War 2.

They had 3 children together, Linda (married name may be Holmes), Christine who died at age 5, and Yvonne who I believe is a nurse.

I turned 40 in March, and it is funny how you end up back where you started. I moved to Maryland and then got really interested in the Archibald surname genealogy. I knew that my family came from Haverhill, Mass. I learned that they to Haverhill from Poland, Maine. I then learned that most likely my link is to the Archies that stayed behind in NH coming from the first group that originated in Londonderry, NH. Back in my high school days, I actually used to run through the cemetery where the Archibald's are buried in East Derry. And now I'm moving back to New Hampshire in a few weeks...I can't WAIT!! Summer is here and I'll be going to Londonderry, Poland, Haverhill and anywhere else my line takes me. Just rambling....Hope all is well with you and yours. Have a great summer- Pete

After her marriage to Michael Rutherford Isabella accompanied him to England and Scotland. They then went to South Africa where Isabella's daughter Mary Ann and her family lived. Isabella died on the 26th September 1903 in Johannesburg. Instead of putting her feet up, Isabella had been nursing soldiers during the Boer War. I would be interested to see where you have located James in 1851, I saw nothing that I felt fitted in with what I know of him.

We have the same g-g grandfather James Elliot and I have traced the Archibalds back to 1685 and the Reids to c1730. I trust you have moved on a little further but I am intrigued and hope we have something to share. My grandmother was Isabella Devereux Jnr.

This is a family which I am researching.

I am writing this so that some corrections can be made in your post as it is quite confusing to anyone looking at it.

You have Alexander m to Rachel Geary, I have Charles. It is possible his name was Charles Alexander (charles taken from marriage record of son)

You have son as Alexander Fitzgerald. All the documents have so far located say his name was Charles Alexander (both marriage & death records). You have his birthdate as 1883 which should be 1833.

Mistakes are easily made when there are common names. I hope you will accept this information in the context it was meant and not as a critisizm.

David Archibald was son of Robert b.April 9, 1781 in Acworth, Sullivan County, NH and Hannah Pierce b.May 4, 1779 Swansea, Bristol County, MA.. Robert d.Feb.18,1853 in Caldwell, Warren County, NY.. Hannah Pierce d.July 7,1827 in Salem, Washington County, NY.. They were m. March 11, 1802 in Hampton, Washington County, NY She was the daughter of Shubel and Abigail (Mason) Pierce. Robert was a Capt in the War of 1812 and ended up being a tanner with his son Samuel in Warren County. Robert was the son of John and Margaret Archibald who came to Salem, NY bet.1785 and 1794. HUGH BRAINE WAS BORN IN 1812 IN QUEEN CAMEL SOMERSET THE SON OF BENJAMIN BRAINE 1792-1875.
HE IS LISTED IN CENSUSES UP UNTIL 1871 AS A SADDLER/ HARNESS MAKER AND WAS MARRIED TO ELIZABETH APSEY BUT I CAN'T FIND A DEATH RECORD FOR HIM.
BENJAMIN WAS BORN ALSO IN QUEEN CAMEL IN 1842 AND MARRIED ELIZABETH FARTHING IN 1866- THEN MOVED TO EBBW VALE AND MERTHYR TYDFIL- HE APPEARS ON CENSUSES UP UNTIL 1881.
ELIZABETH MARRIED GEORGE PAUL AND APPEARS ON 1901 CENSUS HAVING HAD FURTHER CHILDREN BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO PINPONT WHEN BENJAIN DIED.
I'MWONDERING WHETHER HE MAY HAVE SEPARATED FROM ELIZABETH AND RETURNED TO SOMERSET AREA BETWEEN 1881-1901..

I am researching my family tree.
Looking for any information on my Great- Grandfather James who I believe was born in Merthyr tydfil about 1874-5.
He married MABEL HANNAH DAVIES in 1902 and my Grandfather William was born 9th July 1906.
Have tried census but there are just too many James Thomas's !!
I believe he later lived in Bargoed ( Groesfaen)
