My GGGrandfather George W. Arden, married to Susan Carter, was born in Blount, 1842, and died in Monroe, 1926. Could you possibly provide information on his relationship, if any,to Samuel, or to George's son Charlie James Arden.

Violet Arden was my grandson's great, great grandmother's sister (does that make sense?). Their parents were Walter James Arden (b26 Aug 1857, West Derby, Liverpool, Lancs) and Margaret Roose Hughes (b28 Oct 1865, Amlwch, Anglesey). They married 15 Apr 1883 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. I know of 7 daughters they had (from the 1901 census) - Florence Evelyn (my grandson's gg grandmother); Sarah J; Edith E; Maggie; Doris L; Lilian; and Violet. I know that Florence continued to live in Birkenhead, where she was born, but I've been unable to find out what happened to Walter and Margaret. I've always assumed that's because he was a ship's steward. But perhaps the rest of the family moved to Canada?

What time frame are you looking at. My Arden ancestors came in the circa 1850 time frame, lived in Fall River MA/RI. William and Mary were the adults, grown children were Esther (married Booth), William, Elizabeth (married Winter) and James. Had cousins Thomas and John. Some stayed in area, some moved to MN / WI area in late 1850's.

My grandfather, Henry Clarence Arden, had a brother named Sam Arden. Don't know if there is a relation, but thought I'd write to you anyway.

Nothing yet from Ancestry. I've not seen an 1850 marriage for Thomas Booth. I've seen one in 1849 for Thomas Booth and Louisa E Young. Well, I can't wait to see your data!

I have Esther Arden (maiden name) marrying Thomas Booth in 1850, they very young. She is an Arden by birth, he is a Booth. Did you get my trees via ancestry.com.

I am curious about one thing, that perhaps your info will clear up. When Louisa Esther Arden married Thomas Booth, the IGI record say her surname is Young. It was at this point, that I thought she wasn't Mary's daughter, unless she was married under her previous spouses name. Is the IGI record wrong, as they sometimes are?

I actually have two trees with the Arden Family in Ancestry (I am a paid international member) and will have ancestry send you both. I will use Yahoo. Let me know at once, either via the board here or e-mail at sntommy@comcast.net.
One tree is my Bullock tree, Ardens are on my maternal side. Other is the other group of Ardens who Ray Ainsworth said were not children of William and Mary.
I went by the censuses to find William and Mary, plus the local relatives helped me with information as elderly ones remember the tales of the wagon train west to Minnesota well
by Esther Arden Booth and Thomas Booth.
I had a huge assortment of genealogical data on my branches of my tree and never organized them well. When my husband died and I retired I gave myself ancestry.com as a gift. It is the best thing I ever did. It keeps my mind sharp and thinking and I really care about finding out the most I can.
See what you have as opposed to what I have and you can decide how to best exchange information.

I live in Kansas City. I fit in because I married into the family.

I have information on the Ardens that settled in Red Wing, also, you might like to know that James' children moved to the Dakota territory after James Died. You will not find a grave for John, a decorated Civil War Vet, buried without a stone in the pauper's section. Very sad. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing. John, a private in Company A, 5th Minnesota Infantry, was captured near the end of the war and was imprisoned in Sumter Prison, Andersonville, GA. That prison had a 40% fatality rate. So the fact that he survived and lived to an old age is testimony to his luck and hardiness.

If you know the Ardens were in MN, then you probably know that John bought a farm in the Red Wing area and know the
descendants of Simeon.
I thought I responded to Ray about a year ago, but don't see it in this tree. I believe he knows about George Arden's family. I believe I have information on George's family around here somewhere.
I tried to post the data I had, but ancestry won't let me format the message. So it would just look ugly. I'm not sure how you and other users manage to format messages. Perhaps you have to be a paid member to do that. I temporarily changed my settings if you want to email me. I'm curious how you know William came over. I've not ever found anything on him. I was hoping the Ships registers would provide that, but there are so many missing for that timeframe. I'm certain they came directly into Fall River in the 1830s-40s.

Boy, do I have information to share with you!!!
I am guessing your "marriage" family goes back to John Arden. I thought
originally that my Arden family of Esther (Arden) Booth (who married Thomas
Booth), James Arden, William Arden and Elizabeth (Arden) Winter also had sibs
John, and Thomas Arden. My third cousin, Ray Ainsworth, who has corresponed with
you, recently told me he had ruled that out and my original grouping of four was
correct.
As I said, in the 1850 Census, Esther and Thomas Booth were living with the
other Ardens. In 1960 Esther's mother, Mary A Arden and a host of other people
moved in and they lived in Fall River, RI. I have not found out who the Allen
family is.
I have international ancestry.com and that has been enormously helpful. I can
send you my trees, one for the Booth/Arden crew, a separate one for the other
Ardens, if you wish. It will come from you from ancestry.com and say I invited
you to look.
I have so many branches on down and extending out, too much to tell here.
I do have death information on William and Mary A. (Boslum) Arden, they are
buried in Fall River at North Burial Ground and have a gravestone with dates of
death and ages.
Elizabeth Arden married Richard Winter, I found their marriage data in the
archives. They had children, Elizabeth died young and Richard re-married.
Thomas and Esther Booth are also listed in 1860 in the MN Census, as are John,
Martha and Simeon Arden. How could they be in Fall River and MN at the same
time, one wonders, but they have a double entry.
Thomas died and Esther and the children moved back to Fall River where she
re-married, James Lord. Esther's oldest son, Thomas Booth stayed in MN and
moved to Wisconsin, marrying and raising a family.
Have loads more info, but must cut this short for tonight, am going away for the
week-end tomorrow morning, will be back Tuesday.

Next summer I am going to MN and WI to see the places first hand.
Where, approximately, do you live??? And how do you fit in.

My information source for name for Adam, is speculative. My information for Margaret is conflicting. Her name is either Mary or Margaret. The only records I have for her are census records. There is a marriage record for Elizabeth Arden and Richard C Winter, in Fall River 6 Nov 1861, which I've only just ordered. I believe this to be Margaret/Mary's daughter. If this proves true, then the names are Mary and William (or even William Adam), having shelved my research over the past year. All the other information on the Ardens comes from censuses, Civil War Military records (both John and James served), MN and Red Wing death records, and Red Wing area gravestones. James is buried in Belvidere Cemetery, which I haven't visited yet. Additionally, John's death record incorrectly indicates his wife as his mother's name. This week I hope to get more data on the family's arrival in America.
Simeon's data comes from an extract of some record official record (FHL), but the Town Clerk could not find any record of any Ardens, except for a Mary Arden age two death. I believe this is Margaret/Mary's grandaughter. Will know in a few weeks.
Yes, I've often wondered about Thomas and Louisa Esther [Young] Booth, of whom you must be speaking. The Booths are also living with the Ardens in the 1860 Census, in Fall River, RI, not MA - after which they almost all disappear. In 1862 Fall River, RI was merged with Fall River, MA by order of the Supreme court. I'd like to know more about your research. I've always figured they must be related somehow, also Noel F. and Ellen [Murphy] Allen. You can reach me at yahoo.
BTW an Arden married the last Chief Red Wing of the Sioux tribe, no descendants though, that entire clan is extinct.

I'm reseraching the ancestry of Alice Arderne (daughter of Richard Arderne & Margaret Green). She was born in 1410 & married John Denne E(1407-1475) in 1435.

Richard Arderne (son of George Arderne & Katherine Palmer) was born in 1380. He married Margaret Green (daughter of Thomas Greene II & Mary Talbot) who was born in 1390.

George Arderne (son of George DeArdern & Ann Tregall) was born in 1354. He marrked Katherine Palmer who was also born in 1354.

George DeArderne (son of John DeArderne & Alice DeVenables) was born in 1320. He married Ann Tregall who was born in 1330.

John DeArderne (son of John DeArden & Margaret Bromide (?) Griffiths) was born in 1300 in Aldford (Cheshire) England. He was married 2 times. Wife #1 was Joan DeStockport. Wife #2 was Alice DeVenables. Alice was born 1307 in Kinderton (Cheshire) England. John died in 1349.

John DeArden (son of Peter DeArden & Margery ?) was born 1266 in Harden (Cheshire) England. He married Margaret Bromfide (?) Griffiths in 1299 in Aldford (Cheshire) England. John died in 1308. Margaret was born 1276 in Bromfide (Cheshire) England & died in 1325.

Peter DeArden (so n of Wakelyn DeArden & Agnes DeOrresby) wa born 1242 in Harden (Cheshire) England. He married Margery ? after 1265. Peter died in 1292. Margery was born in 1246 & died in 1300.

Wakelyn DeArden (son of John DeArden & Margaret DeAldford) was born 1217 in Aldford (Cheshire) England. he married Agnes DeOrresby (1220-1270), daguther of Phillip DeOrresby & Leuca Montalt, in 1247 in Alwanly (Cheshire) England. Wakelyn died in 1268.

John DeArden (son of Eustache DeArden) was born 1185 in Aldford (Cheshire) England. He married Margaret DeAldford in 11205. John died in 1238. Margaret was born 1185 in Aldford (Cheshire) England & died in 1235.

Eustache DeArden was born 1165 in Watford, England & died in 1199.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm doing a bit of research about my husband's family because we are taking a trip to England this August and came across your message. His Great Great Grandfather's name was Richard Arden and he lived in Poynton...there are 2 Poynton's but one (in Cheshire) is very close to Stockport. He was born in 1826 to William and Mary Green and his family ran and I think owned the Red Lion Inn in Poynton for around 200 years. I can't find out a lot and don't know if he had any siblings, but the dates and places are very close. He married a Mary Ann Bullock from Disley (also very close to Stockport) and she was born in 1832 and they moved to Wisconsin sometime before 1864 which is when my husbands great grandfather, William F. was born. Your message is over a year old so I don't even know if you'll get this but it seemed like a lot of similarities to me. We live in Wisconsin (USA).

I was just curious about this subject. My grandmother was married to Horace Ardern. When he arrived here, the spelling was changed to "Arden". The last correspondence to my grandmother was when your father was very young. My mom, Betty Arden Rayman is the last living member of this family. She is 83 years old today and has no memory of her father Horace who died when she was 2. I have just a few bits and pieces of info about Horace's family back in England. My family descend from a John Ardern & Mary ???, of Bradshaw, near Bury Lancashire, to another John who married Mary Walton at Walton Le Dale.
Their son Joseph married Jane Giles in Cheadle and their son William, married a Georgianna Richards.
They had a son Giles Ardern who married an Elizabeth Ellen Lear in Manchester Cathedral in 1863. These are my G Grandparents and they emigrated to NZ , arriving in Jan.1874 at Auckland and settled at Thames. Their first NZ born were twins, William & Martha, William Edward Ardern being my Grandfather. He married Ann Moorcraft.
One of their sons Robert Lear Ardern married Winifred Mabel Merrick and they were my parents.

This Thomas was a butcher of Lanehead, Disley and was the son of William Ardern(e) Arden ala Ardrene ala Hordern of Stanley Hall Disley and his first wife Elizabeth Cleaton (Clayton). This William's parents were William Ardern of Norbury who died 30 March 1727 & his wife Elizabeth ???.
Interesting note is that some of William Ardern & Elizabeth Cleatons descendants, through their G G Grandson George Arde(r)n, b 1795 Disley, but of Stockport, who married Sarah Broadhurst, reverted to using the name Arden.and it is through one of these descendants that Donald Arden, father of Sharon Osbourne descended from.

George Arden actually had 6 children (some who are still alive.) All of George's kids' names start with the letter D.

I am posting this for my cousin. Her mother was Adele Katherine Mullen, born 11/8/1919. Married 1st Jack Arden, I remember my mom telling me that they had a dau, poss Diane. Adele left her husband and moved to Fl with my uncle George John Dey and they had 2 children. When George died I remember my mom having a phone conversation with Adele asking if Jack had ever gotten the divorce. I know that Adele's parents are Walter born abt 1896 & Agnes Adele Guss (or Guso) born 1902. Adele had 2 younger sisters, names unknown to me at this time. I'm researching my husband's family and there seems to be a host of you with information on the Stockport Arderns so I am asking for your help.

My husband's 2 times gr grandfather was George Arden. b. abt. 1842. According to his marriage registration, his father was Josiah Arden. In the 1851 and 1861 U. K. census I find a Jesse Ardern with second wife Charlotte in Stockport.. In 1851, son, George, dau, Mary and stepson, Peter Richmond. In 1861 the addition of dau's Fanny and Margaret.
I find no Jesse or Josiah in 1841.

In 1866, George marries Elizabeth Fitzpatrick and in 1878 moves to Philadelphia, PA. While I wait on my BMD's from the GRO I was hoping someone out there might know something about this family prior to 1851.

Peter Halldron (presumed to be the Peter above) married Sarah Fletcher (a widow) Stockport St Mary's 1817.

Sarah Fletcher had three children by her first husband (name not known), Charles (1812), John(1814) and Thomas(1817)

Peter and Sarah on the census and death certificates as Ardern.

John was George's (b. 1827) older brother. John was a witness at Georges wedding. Their father was Thomas b. Worsley 1796.

I am sure the Worsley/Wardley Ardens were all related. What is your interest? If you are an Arden perhaps we could exchange data.

The change in surnames caused me all sorts of problems, I can tell you! I think it all has to do with pronunciations from country to town. Plus, the Ardernes were a big name in Stockport, so it's likely people just thought Haldern (the Cheshire rural pronunciation being 'Orldern') was the same. Plus they were illiterate!

Joshua Arden is my ggggg-grandfather. I have searched all through Ancestry and haven't found anything more on Joshua Arden. He seems to have come from NC but other than the fact that he died in Monroe TN in 1870 I can't find anything else. Know anyone in NC who might be able to shed some light on the subject?

James Thomas Arden was Verda's brother. We would love to talk to you about any information you might have and also share what we have. Also their is an Arden Family Reunion the first Sunday in June in Kilgore, Texas, at the "Kilgore Community Center".
This is a very large family reunion. Sadly Ma-maw passed away in 2004, she was the last of the sons and daughters of Thomas Franlin and Addie Caroline Arden.

I came to your posting because I was looking at Ardens from Sandbach, Cheshire. Your post prompted me to look for Rafael Sabatini, and I found him with his mother in the 1901 census.
I also found a website devoted to him, www.rafaelsabatini.com, which advised that in 1905 Rafael Sabatini "married Ruth Goad Dixon, one of the daughters of the well-to-do Liverpool paper merchant Lancelot Steele Dixon". "At the age of 60 Rafael remarried in 1935. He married his former sister-in-law, Christine Dixon, a woman who had been married to Ruth's brother. {She was a} sculptor of considerable talent".
I suppose it is a cooincidence, but the family I am researching, Philip and Mary Arden of Sandbach, named their second child George Steele Arden in 1825. I wonder what the Steele connection is?

Today I looked at and printed out from Ancestry.com the visitations for Oxfordshire, England. There is a pedigree chart for Arden, of Cottsford and Kirtlington and it shows that Alice Arden "maryed Thomas Dorne al's Thorne of Northamptonshire". Are these the parents of Thomas who md. Mary Purefoy? I do not have a surname for Thomas who had a wife Alice...

SORRY for the delay in answering your response. I have not been able to locate any info on Samuel Arden or my Christianna in the mean time. Christianna came to Adams county with her husband and children. His name was Ezra Noe and he died on their arrival Jan 10, 1859 in Beverly. Their children were Charlotte b. Sept 29, 1849 in New Jersy. Ann Eliza, James A,and Alfred. After the death of Ezra, Christina married Samuel Oct 21, 1859. I think they had one child C.T. Arden still living in 1924 in Seattle wash. In the 1860 census the original bunch of children had been placed in various homes. Charlotte was living with Christopher Stauffer and james was living with a George Stauffer. the first four children were made wards of George Stauffer May 21, 1863. Maybe some of this can help you..I still don't know why the children were moved to Stauffer homes. There were supposedly Noe relatives in the area..thereby the move from New Jersy but I don't know if there was a Stauffer-Noe connection. Charlotte married Jeffers in Baylis, Pike county. Have you learned any more about these Ardens..Do you know the date of death of Christianna? Maybe that is why the children were sent away????????? Candace Jeffers Smith
