KOREAN WAR SOLDIERS' REMAINS IDENTIFIED

The remains of two soldiers missing in action from the Korean War have been identified and returned to their families for burial in the United States.

They are identified as . . . U.S. Army Pfc. Herbert Ardis, Detroit, Mich. The remains of . . . Ardis were recovered about three miles apart in an area approximately 60 miles north of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.

The remains of both soldiers were recovered during investigations and excavations directed by the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office following negotiations with North Korea in 1996, 1997 and 1998. The U.S. teams conducted ten excavations from 1996-99 inside North Korea and have recovered 39 remains of American servicemen lost during the war. Three have been identified, including . . . Ardis, with approximately 8,200 still missing in action.

The recovery of the remains of both these soldiers, as well as the forensic identification work, was carried out by the U.S. Army's Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii.

During the Nov. 26, 1950, battles with Chinese communist units near the Chongchon River in North Korea, Ardis' unit was surrounded, but broke through the encirclement and took up a defensive position where they continued to repel the enemy for the next two days. But on Nov. 28, his unit encountered a Chinese roadblock, where they abandoned their vehicles and retreated to the south on foot. Ardis was listed as missing in action as a result of these encounters. His remains were recovered by a joint U.S./North Korean team in P'yongan-Pukto Province in July 1998.

I saw your message(s) from several years ago regarding your having further information on a few South Carolina plantations.

I am a descendent of Henry Cowden, a Union Army veteran whose slaveowners were awarded a 'bounty' for allowing him to enlist. www.pvthenrycowdenusct.ourfamily.com

As the last name Cowden is relatively unusual I was quite curious to learn about the Cowden Plantation you mention in your posts about Silver Bluff Plantation. I woul be very interested in receiving whatever information you have related to the surname "Cowden."

I, too, am searching for Daniel, or James (1767 Will), or any of the Ardis heads of household listed in the will collection through the Library of Virginia. Do you have any information on where they sailed from when they arrived in Accomack County, Virginia in the early 1700's.

He is my g.g. grandfather. I or Bruce can fill you in with the rest of the line from him (Bruce probably has more names than I do).

Do you know anything about him? Birth, parents, anything like that? I was told he was in charge of the money for a logging company and he was killed on payday!

Bruce - Please get in touch! I'm a distant cousin of John Adrain Ardis and also have information on the family, with discrepancies! First that John Adrain drowned in the Riviere Desert on the date you have. Second that Bridget Groulx was born in 1859 and married him in 1885, which fits with the births of their 3 sons. The widow Bridget married again and I met her daughter Annie Grant in Quebec many years ago.
My branch spells the name Ardies.

Are you still around? I believe John Adrian Ardis was a distant
cousin of mine, athough no one seems to remember the connection.
I met Annie Grant, daughter of his second wife's second husband(!)
many years ago in Quebec, and she gave me what info I have on
this family. She said John Adrian drowned in the Riviere Desert
in Quebec. Strange discrepancy!

My grandfather was R.H.Artis of marshall co al. His mother
was sarah elizabeth Wilson and father John. John died several years before Sarah and I am unsure of my info but here goes with what I have. William Willson married Peggy Doublehead in 1824 in Madison co Al and there are land grant records since Peggy was an indian, in Jackson co al.I think this is the same family , Have you ever heard of an Indian connection?

He had three kids with my great grandmother but their is no proof of marriage but they took his name. He then disapeard and was never heard from again. JOHN ARDIS was b.1830 (where?) and died 1900 in Smith Co., Tx.- Buried @ Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co., Tx.

JOSEPH was b. 1837 in Ala., d. 1882 Jackson Co., Ala. Buried @ Tanyard Cemetery, in Holleytree, Jackson Co., Ala.

MARY T. (Wilson) ARDIS was b. 1839, Marshall Co., Ala., died there in 1872.

JOHN married: (1)NANCY CARROLL in Jackson Co., Ala. in 1866; (2) MARY T. WILSON (my great-grandmother) in Marshall Co., Ala. in 1868 -MARY T. (Wilson) ARDIS was b. 1839, Marshall Co., Ala., died there in 1872 and, (3) SARAH ELIZ. WILSON (Mary's sister) in 1872.

JOHN and MARY T. WILSON are my great-grand-parents. Their 2 children were: MARGARET ANN ARDIS, b. 1869 and SUSAN ELIZABETH ARDIS, b. c.1872.

JOHN and JOSEPH's father was THOMAS ARDIS, b. c.1799 in Va. We think he was married to SUSAN (Pockrus) ARDIS, b. c.1810.

I have information regarding JOE ARDIS enslaved at Silver Bluff Plantation, SC, owned by James Henry Hammond of Redcliffe.
Joe ARDIS married Lavinia GOODWIN b. circa 1828 at Silver Bluff, the daughter of Joe GOODWIN b. circa 1776 and Jane b. circa 1781. Joe and Lavinia ARDIS had at least seven children:
1. DILSY b. 12 April 1854 Silver Bluff, SC
2. NOAH b. 27 Nov 1856 Silver Bluff, SC
3. SAMUEL b. 09 Sept 1861 Silver Bluff, SC

Major Flemming and Julia Caroline Rice are
my 3rd generation grandparent's back. MF had
a son James Oakley and his son Major Jefferson is my Mom's father. The Ardis name
seems to be a rather difficult one to trace.
Is there a history of the Ardis men throwing
off more female children than male? I also,
have family in TX- Vidor, TX. That is where
all of my Ardis relatives are or were until
I came across you and also Sue and Sharon
Martin in Gurley, Alabama. Do those names
ring a bell for you? Sue is where my newest
info came from. She is related thru MF and

I have recently found out from my grandfather's sister that her grandmother's name was Elizabeth Wilson. My grandfather's last name was Artis which had been changed from Ardis at some point years ago. From doing some research and asking a lot of questions I found out that Elizabeth's husbands name was John. I do know that they had several children together and one of their children was James H. Ardis/Artis who married Lucy A. Whisenant. (I believe she was either his 2nd or 3rd wife). They had four children together named Lillian, Velma, Jimmie (girl), and John D. "Jay" Artis. John D. was my mother's father.

John Adrian Ardis from Belfast B c. 1850

I am looking for information about John Adrian Ardis born in Armagh (N.) Ireland c. 1850 and moved at some point to Canada. Married Bridget Gromlex? from Toledo, Ohio. Had a son named Victor (Vic) Ardis and as the family story goes died when Vic was a baby - murdered in a robbery.

I may be able to add some additional information. John Adrian may also be John Adrain. I have fround both spellings in the family history. Also the spelling is also seen as Ardies. I had not heard the robbery story. I believe he died on December 21, 1892 so the timing is probably accurate.

He was married to Bridget Groulx who was born in 1874.

I was in Destin Fl area and bought several photo's in an antique store. The first one is an old photo of a woman in her 30's. She has armbands with what looks like tic-tac-toe board imprinted. From my looking at census records, I assume she was nursing during the civil war. On the back is written the following.
"My Great Aunt Anna Hassetine Ardis- called Auntie. She never married. Lived and buried in Mt. Lebanon. Given to me Aug 18 by Aunt Susie." The second is a lady in her 50's taken in Shreveport La. On the back is written Great Aunt Hattie Ardis. The third one is a young boy taken in Farmerville, La. On the back is written Ardis Marbury. My assumption is that he is of the same family.

I would love to return these to the family. Let me know if you think these belong to you.
