Sherry,

Does your book have any info regarding Muhl? Muhl is a small village near those in your book's title. My people from Muhl are Finkler, spelled many different ways.

I have the book--Die Einwohner von Wadrill und Sitzerath vor 1850.These localities are a bit Southwest of your book's area.

I know what you mean about 1st names --no use thinking up a new one if an old one can be reused.

martin

Hi Richard,
I just got this as our computer was in the shop
for the past 3 weeks. Thanks for your reply. As
I mentioned in my original post...my Great Aunt
Nita (Juanita) was married to Joseph Arent of Visalia.
Aunt Nita died there in Visalia and is buried there also.
I have her OBIT somewhere in my paper records, but
as we have moved recently, my Genealogy is still packed.
I would appreciate emailing you or your wife directly for any
further info regarding her and her husband Joe. I hope you
have pics, Marriage License, etc. for them? I know they managed
a mobile home park in Visalia, which is interesting as that is what
she and her previous husband, Walter did in Southern CA when I was little.
Thanks again and feel free to email me directly.
Cecilia Stumpf Hughes
craftyclh1@earthlink.net

I have an original studio photograph of “Peter Arent and family – wife and children Sam, Clara & Walter”, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in about 1920, and the parents look to be about in their 60s, while the children are in their upper 20s. Also written on the back of the photo is “Peter is Maggie B—dix brother” which could be Buldix, or Buedix (?)

I found Peter and his family in the 1900 and 1920 censuses in Bainbridge (Berrien Co.) Michigan. In 1900, Peter’s DOB is Apr 1864, born MI. Louise DOB: Jan 1867. Samuel - May 1892; Clara - Jun 1893; Walter - May 1898.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to the Arent family of Berrien Co., MI.

Hi Sherry,

How good to hear from you, I really appreciate you looking into the Petto book on Michigan for me because I do not have it. I do have the Walter Petto book on Damflos, it is in constant use. I think your suggestions on Zusch names makes good sense, they sure didn't use many new names. I still have not been able to find anything on this particular family, someone who has them on a web page stated that they were from the village of Schmolda, Prussia, but I cannot find any place with that name so think the information is not accurate.

I have multiple ancestors from Zusch, going back to Heinrich Jacob Schmidt born 1707, his grandson, Heinrich Peter Schmidt, came to the US in 1857 and two of his children are my great grandparents (siblings married two of my ancestors.) I don't believe that I have any Arents in my immediate line, but since we are both descended from Zusch families, I would not be surprised if we are distant cousins.

I would love to share my information with you if you are willing, you can contact me at my email address.

Jeanine

Re: German Arent's

Jeanine,
Have you seen Walter Petto's book, "Einwohner von Zusch, Neuhutten, Damflos 1574 bis 1820?" This is a wonderful genealogical study of the inhabitants of these three villages. It was published in 1985. My copy is falling apart as it has been my main source of information. My maiden name is Arent and my gggrandfather, Daniel Arend/Arent was born in Zuesch and came to America with his father and siblings in 1851 and settled in Bainbridge Township, Berrien County, Michigan. I was born in Benton Harbor. Many families from Zuesch settled there. If you have been doing research on the village, you know that they were not very imaginative on first names. J was almost always 'Johann' when listed as the first name and more than likely, F stood for Franz which most changed to Frank in the US. Men usually went by their second names. Maria was as common as Elizabeth and Anna. However, I went through all the Arend's in the book (back to Hans Mathias b. about 1660) and could not find a single 'Adolf.' There is a good chance that he had another name and chose 'Adolf' when he came to the states. Another possibility is that the letters were reversed and he could be a Franz Jacob.

Walter did another book on 16 families from Zuesch that settled in Bainbridge Township. As in the small village, these families intermarried and I'm related to 12 of the 16. I came up empty in this book too. Sorry that I can't be of more help to you. You might try the ships logs that came over at that time. They kept pretty good records but you have to really be creative in the spellings of names and sometimes you will find whole families who came over under a different surname. Perhaps if you have any more information to share, I can try again.
Sherry

Aaron (and spelling variants) DNA Project

Just wanted to mention the AARON DNA project is well underway.

I just ordered my 25-marker kit from Family Tree DNA as they're running a special right now where you can get the 25-marker test for $139 by joining the AARON group and using their $30 off gift certificate (which is good till Dec 31st).

I'll be the second person in the AARON DNA Project (and I know in the past we've had around 5 or 6 people that said they were interested) so hopefully we can really start to expand, and see if we connect.

Here is the link to the Family Tree DNA page where you can order a kit, and there is also a link from here to the AARON DNA page, which is run by Terry Barton (who is very helpful and can answer questions):

http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=Z89537&am...

All surname variants welcome as we've seen of often "AARON" came from something similar over the generations (ARON, AREND, ARNN, ARENT, ARRON, etc.)

Trying to locate the family of Joseph ARENT of Visalia area. My Great Aunt Nita (Juanita Beatrice AKA" Nettie") married Joseph ARENT in 1969 in Visalia. She is gone now as is he, Joseph having died May 1985. They are both buried in Visalia. I would like to contact the family for info as to this marriage, possibly pictures as well as info regarding a Genealogy book Nita was writing about her COX family lineage. Nita's Maiden Name was COX. Our side of the COX family has lost the family book during the death of a relative while moving. We are hoping someone in the ARENT family knows the name of the book and how to get a copy from the LDS.
Thank you,
Cecilia Hughes
Great Niece of Juanita Beatrice (COX) ARENT
Fresno, CA

Have been doing research on family for over 30 years and translated much of Walter Petto's book "Einwohner von Zusch, Neuhutten, Damflos 1574 bis 1820." Our line can be traced to Hans Matheis Arend born about 1660 and died before 1730 in Zuesch. His father was Michael Arend, who settled in Zuesh about 1670. Do not know where he came from. I have 12 generations traced from Hans. If you are Jack, jr., you are close to my brother's age. Do you live in Michigan?
Hello An,

You seek Keizers? I am one of many, many Americans whose surname is Keizer. My grandparents, Gerben Keizer Sr. and Lidia Calsbeek Keizer, left Holland in 1886 to come to America. They brought 6 children, and had 5 more children in the United States.

Those two were married in the Church of Het Bildt, St. Anna Parochie, Friesland Province. Gerben Keizer was from that province, but Lidia Calsbeek's honme was listed as "Aalzum" on their September 13, 1877 wedding certificate.

They came to Sioux County, Iowa, and lived in the Alton area. Many Keizers are buried at Alton, Rock Valley, Hull, and Hawarden, small towns in that county.

My father was Gerben Keizer Jr, born in the U.S. in 1892, He was a farmer until 1935, then bought and ran the Northwest Iowa Feed Store in Hawarden, Iowa. Cemetery records show many Keizers buried in Grace Hill Cemetery there...most of whom are my family.

I have pictures of the Gerben Keizer Sr family in1896 and in 1914, and several of the Gerben Keizer Jr.family. I would share them on E-mail.

A cousin in Holland and I have begun corresponding by regular mail, He has sent me a list of our Keizer ancestors that goes back about 5 generations. Would you like to see it?

Please E-mail me if you would like to see if these Keizers are the Keizer family you are seeking.

Milt

Norman, In response to my name pronounciation, Yes, we use it as in Aren't, but it always surprises me of the many variations people come up with.

We have not had any luck tracing dad's family beyond his father in Pittsburgh, but we have his wife's maiden name and his Grandfather was named Michael who lived in Poland (Russia/Germany). We have been researching Immigration records for quite some time, but cannot find where or when Walter and his (known) brother Karol immigrated. Dad thought they came in through Canada. The only resource I suspect that may have a record is the St. Alban's lists which are not indexed on the Internet. We are hoping that we''ll have some success with the LDS microfilm library. Our main goal is to find where in Poland they originated from....
Let me check with my father and see if he knows his grandfather's first name (I would hope that he would). Sounds plausible, since my dad's family grew up on the North Side of Pittsburgh, specifically near Perry High School. Question... do you pronounce your name like the word "Aren't"?

He also had a brother named Charles. Is there a possible connection?

Hello An. Hope you had a great holiday. The Birshners you talk of, may be the same offshoot of my Grandmothers family. Their name is (was) Birsner. I may be wrong in the spelling. They came from Germany, I believe around 1885 . If memory serves well, my Great Grandparents were Joseph and Wilhemia Birsner.I got this much from the 1920 USA New York City census. Spring is here!!! Be well, Nancy Stalter.

Hello An. I hope you are having better luck then I am, in finding relatives. I have tried working thru the 1920 census. I know that both maternal and paternal families should be listed, but yikes!! forget it. Very disappointed with it all. It has been in the high 80's all week. They are calling for snow flurries on monday and tueday. Upstate new york is crazy.Do you have a regular email address that you would care to send? I don't know if I will subscribe to this ancestry site again. If I don't I will lose contact. Take care, be well, Nancy.

Hello An. I do not have much information on my maternal (ARENT) side. My Grandfather was JACOB PETER ARENT. He was born April 23, 1875 in New York City. His ancestors came from Alsaice(?) Lorraine. Forgive me, my spelling is poor.I have tried locating some ARENT'S, but have not been successful. Jacob's eldest daughter(my Aunt) Ann, married SYLVESTER KAISER of NYC in the 1920's. I have no idea whom Jacob's parents were.NO information on the Kaisers either. All of my family is gone, except for my sister and brother. My fathers Mother's maiden name was BIRSNER. His Dad was Irish. My Dad grew up with German being spoken in his home in BROOKLYN NEW YORK. I believe her parents were 1st generation american. Where do you live? I live in NEW YORK STATE. We have spring now. It is quite nice. Thank you for writing me. Hope to hear from you soon, Nancy Stalter

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hans Matheis gets me back to my 10th generation! Wonderful! You state that HIS father was Michael AREND?

A couple questions you might be able to answer and might be interesting to other folks researching their trees.

1. I noticed in our tree there is a Johann Michael whose father is ALSO Johann Michael. There is no Jr. or Sr. listed. Was this common in those times? example: I am Jack Clinton Jr., my father being Jack Clinton Sr.

2. Christian AREND's parents were both Surnamed AREND? I can't trace the wife's line back past her father so I don't know how close a relationship there was. Or is the AREND surname so common in Germany that there probably is no close relationship.

Again, thank you for the information you sent and I will gather my own lines data per your request and get it to you.

Jack C. Arent Jr.
Greetings An. I wanted to thank you for contacting me. For so long, I had hit a wall with my ARENT research. It had been a long time since I had gotten anywhere with the family .history. After your last letter, I climbed back on board and found my maternal family. Under 1920 census, look up JACOB ARENT in NY only. There will be 3 of them. He will be listed as 46 years of age. Go to the online images, and you will find his entire brood. My Mom was the youngest age 2. I found his brothers family, Peter Arent. Hooray. Thank you very much. I am excited again, Nancy.

German Arent's

Hello. Just getting started with this but need to find out how to get more info on german ancestry. My g-father; Clinton Arent->gg-father; Willhelm F ->ggg-father; Charles Christian -> gggg-father; Christian. That's where i lose it. Supposedly he married a Phillipina LOCH but i can find no birth or death on either one. Both presumably in Germany. Charles Christian ARENT was the first of my paternal line to immigrate but I have no data on when. He was born in Zuesch, Rhineland, Germany in 1843. Any help on this would be most appreciated and I, of course would be more than willing to fill in with any data i have not that anyone is likely to need it. Most of what I know is available right on Ancestor.com for free.
