I have Lyle Oliver Armel born June 13,1895, in Holton Kansas, and died December 6, 1948, in Washington D.C. He was a captain in the Naval Reserve. His wife was Geraldine Riley. Lyle Oliver Armel II lived from 1931-1989 and was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy where his roommate for four years was Ross Perot. Lyle II was a career Navy man and reportedly died of the effects of Agent Orange. He had a brother Thomas C. Armel and a sister Martha Lee Armel. Lyle Sr.'s brother Dwight died in 1981.

Daniel Armel in Kansas and Pennsylvania

Hi I'm trying to trace my wife's family tree. We're currently living in the UK but have discovered her ancestry going back to the US and hit a wall going back further than a Mr Daniel Armel. We think he was born in Pennsylvania around 1820 and lived mostly in Allen County Kansas, getting married to a Keturah (or Kate) Hare.

Grateful if anybody has any further info on Daniel's Parents or siblings.

Many Thanks

Armels in Unity Twp, PA

I've taken an interest in a beautiful old brick 2-story on Armel Road in Unity Twp about 4.5 miles southwest of Youngstown PA. Looks like it was built mid-1800s or before. It's in disrepair, overgrown and not occupied, but the brickwork is still in great condition and it's possible that it could still be restored. I'm trying to find out who built it and how old it is. Does anyone know anything about this house? If you'd like to see a photo, please e-mail me at smnease@comcast.net.

Do you know if Elizabeth Fry Armel's father was Michael Fry or have a brother named George? The reason I'm asking is I am related to the Armel family and just came across a document that was to be recorded in Westmoreland County releasing Elizabeth's claim to her father's estate.
It was written in 1862.
Also, I would love to have the history you referred to in your earlier email.

Thank you for the additional information about the Armels and Soxmans. I have not seen Hoffman's St. James Lutheran Church Records, only transcripts of the cemetery. I have Sarah Armel's (Ermel) birthdate as August 8, 1825. This came from the IGI and their source is the records of St. John's Lutheran and Reformed Churches, Mt. Pleasant Township. She was christened September 25,1825. As for William H. and Margaret Soxman, I didn't realize Flora was their daughter. I think it was the 1880 or 1900 census that listed her as Margaret's niece. And thank you for Margaret's maiden name! I guess I was confused by Susan Armel Soxman's date of death because of information in a copy of an old typed transcript of the burials at St. James. Near Peter and Mary Soxman is a listing for "Susanna, daughter of M.Soxman." There is no date but I thought she might be the one who died on January 21, 1860, and not Susan Armel. I also did not know the middle name of Mathias Jr.(1836-1913) was Earl. He was my great great grandfather and I've never seen that in any other records including his death certificate. I know he had a son named Earl Mathias.

Re: Look for Sarah Armel married to Frederic Soxman

The information about Susan Armel Soxman came from two sources, Boucher's Old & New Westmoreland Co., and Hoffman's St. James Lutheran Church Records (p. 81). Hoffman lists her death date as 1.21.1860. Sarah Armel's death date came from an online listing for St. James Cemetery (as 9.27.1820). As for William H. Soxman, his obit lists his birth & death as 4.12.1845 & 11.2.1930 (from Adams Library microfilm of Latrobe Bulletin). He was buried 11.4.1930 and was noted as a Civil War vet, Co. H., 211 Reg. P.I. GAR and grave notes he is son of Frederic. Obit notes he was 85 days, 4 months, & 25 days old. He died at Westmoreland Hospital and was buried with a military funeral. Ezra's and Philip's dates came from census records. As to James, the information is from census records; however, I found a James b. 1859 listed with both Sarah's parents and with Frederick in the same censuses (1860 & 1870). Unless he was shuffled between them and they both claimed him on the census both years, it wouldn't seem likely that there is only one James. I have been to St. James Cemetery and have photos of the graves of Frederick (his inscription states d. 3.2.1857 aged 39 years, 1 mo., 1 day and includes an illegible verse), William H. (1846-1930 + Civil War info and son of Frederick), Peter (d. 3.22.1872 aged 68 years, 8 mo., 11 days) and Mary (w/of Peter d. 8.2.1872 aged 44 years, 3 mo., 12 days).
For Thomas H. Soxman, I have him married to Margaret "Marge" E. Bosler. St. James Lutheran Church Records (Hoffman author) notes his dates as 4.7.1856-7.29.1898 and hers as 9.10.1860-8.31.1901. They had a daughter Flora Elda Soxman b. 10.1.1885 d. 9.4.1905 from TB and complications. She lived w/grandfather John Bosler of Lippencott for 4 years prior to her death and arranged her own funeral (Latrobe Bulletin, 9.5.1905 - Adams Library microfilm). I also have photos of the grave marker for them.
I have more info for Peter's and Frederic's parents and siblings and for Mathias Earl, the son of Peter and Barbara Butt, Peter's first wife (before Mary Armel), but most of it is from Ancestry databases, census data, Unity Cemetery accounts available through Heritage Quest, and online postings (Saxman Homepages).

I am also interested in Sarah Armel and Frederick Soxman. Do you have a source for the death of Susan Armel Soxman (1862)? I know her husband Mathias married again that year but I was under the impression Susan died shortly after their son James Albert was born in 1859, at least according to one of the county histories. I also have a different birthdate for Sarah Armel: August 8, 1825. Also, from William H.Soxman's Pa. death certificate I have: b. April 12, 1845, d. November 2, 1930. Ezra Soxman's Pa. death certificate states: b. November 11, 1850, d. August 7, 1931. Philip Armel Soxman's (Saxman) California death certificate has: b. July 8, 1853, d. February 22, 1930. I wasn't aware Sarah and Frederick had a fifth child. Could James J. Soxman b. 1859 be the same as James Albert Soxman b. 1859 to Sarah's sister Susan? James Albert went to live with Sarah and Sarah's parents in Pleasant Unity after Susan died. He was listed as "Albert" or "J.A." in the census. I'd be interested in reading what else you have on this family.

HI Tami,

I do not have any material at my finger tips. I do remember that the son died in California doing missionary work. Since Ruth was born to my dad John B. Keefer and Florence Leonard in 1910 I know little of them. I was born in 1945.

The daughter may still be alive in NY. Ruth or Florence lived near Conneautsville. Grace the youngest married Vilus Maust and lived in Somerset County, PA

I coould be confusing Ruth and Florence in regard to the chilldren. Did you ever hear that Iden had children to my sister ? By the way Iden is living with Florence Keefer, my dad,s first wife. I do not see any children with them.

Tony Keefer

Question for Judith Armel

Hello, my name is Mabel Christine Armel Campbell. My older sister Patricia Armel Fox Brinklow and I have been working on our family history. We are part of the Armels from Frederick/ Clarke County Virginia. We have traced our family back to our Great Grandfather James Armel married to Barbara Unstead. (Our grandfather was Charles Henry Armel, and our father was Charles Robert Armel Sr.) So far we have James having 6 children but not sure if that is all or not. We have been looking through the census' and other things and are having trouble linking everyone. I have noticed that you have a lot of info on the Armels, and we were wondering if you would mind helping us out. We would like to go back as far as possible. We would really appreciate your help. We can also give you all the info we have if you would like.

Thank you for you time,
Chrissy Armel-Campbell

Sorry, James, but my Brewer line is not connected to the South Carolina Brewers. My great uncle, Daniel Brewer married an ArMel, not an ArNell. When I was searching for my grandfather's line I was also thrown against the problem of Arnell/Armel, but have cleared it up since. They simply aren't connected! My Brewers came over early---in the 16oo's to Mass. and gradually went west when my g-grandfather got a grant for Ohio land. If I recall correctly, the SC Brewers came mid 1700's to Virginia and migrated to KY, Tn, the AR and OK. Some of them intermarried with Cherokees. Good luck!---Judy
