I have a hosted website for Armisteads (mostly UK)- (armistead.pgvhosting.com - no www - not easiest to use)
but also my own database with a little information about Cam family and Ellen Bailiff (best guess). But I have nothing on Elizabeth Taylor (Christopher's mother) as my ancestor (George) was his half brother.
I have also been investigating a Chancery case and a convict who were first cousins to our ancestors
Karen

Hi Al,

Keep in mind that much of the biographical info on this death certificate was supplied by a family member who could have been wrong about certain names, dates, or locations. But, since it came from the son named “Rufus”, you would think that he definitely knew his father’s middle name and date of birth.
As for the date of death, I don't think there can be any doubt since it was certified by a doctor.
On that same website under marriages of Shelby Co, TN, you’ll find the marriage record of “Mamie Armistead” to James L. Andrews on 7 Mar 1899. Apparently, “Mary Elizabeth” Armistead went by several nicknames – i.e. Massie, Mamie. For example, in the 1880 census for Shelby Co. TN, she goes by “Mary”, and in the 1900 census she is “Massie” Andrews. I suspect your family bible is her correct formal name.
Also noticed in the 1880 census that there is a 4-yr old sister named “Eva” which I hadn’t noticed before. Don’t know what happened to her.
Regards,
John
Hi Al,
There seems to be a discrepancy between the “family records” you’ve got and the actual death certificate info. According to the death certificate of Kimbrel Richard Armistead (which can be found by searching the Shelby Co TN death records at http://register.shelby.tn.us/ ) his biographical info was provided by Rufus Armistead and his death was certified on 23 Feb 1927.
Regards,
John
Amy Powell Owen Armistead/John Armistead

I am researching the Powell family of Sussex Co., VA., that migrated to Oglethorpe Co., GA., before 1790

My records show that a John Powell b. ukn, d. before Apr 1796, left a will in Oglethorpe Co., GA., dtd 15 Apr 1796, and cites a daughter named Amy in his will.

Other records of Oglethorpe cite a deed of gift, dtd 26 Sep 1818, betweeb a John and Amy Armistead and some Owen children. In this deed Amy is cited as the widow of a Capt. William Owen, before she married John Armistead, and names her children. The deed also names the mother of Amy to be a Boice.

My records show that a John Powell of Sussex Co., VA married Boice Gee 6 Sep 1780.

Has anyone researched this Amy Powell Owen Armistead? I know her father to be a John Powell, but there is much confusion about the birth/line of this John Powell.

I am not a member of the Armistead mailing list, so if anyone is willing to share their Powell reseach, please write to me: NKCorum@aol.com

Armistead and Armstead

My name is Nicole Cook and I am the great granddaughter of William J. and Lucy Armistead(Lucy's last name was possibly Jackson). I am reposting this message because I now have new information concerning my family. William was born in 1860 to Anthony and Kate Armistead. It's possible they had another child. To my knowledge Anthony was Kate's slave master but I am not sure were either of them were born. William was born in 1860 in South or North Carolina but later moved to Virginia. William and Lucy had 9 children: Ruth Jackson,(Lucy's older child from a previous relationship) Willie Ann, Jeanetta(twin), Leroy(twin), Mary(twin), Martha(twin), Frank(my grandfather), Andrew, and Moses(this is their birth order). Later my family's last name was changed, the i was removed when my grandfather and his siblings went to school so the teacher could separate the black Armistead's from the white. I am searching for as much imformation as possible about our family and can be emailed at NikkiAC1970@aol.com.

I don't know for sure. Maybe Scott would. My great-grandmother, Mary Armistead Bradford, was the oldest of the children of Louisa and George. She was the only one living during the 1814 battle and she outlived her three siblings. Her brother, of course, was Christopher and I don't know too much of him. Mary died while visiting her only child, John Bradford, my grandfather, in Minnesota and is buried there. Her marker describes her ancestry and famous father. Interesting to learn that you provided the info for the Upperville cemetery. I have not been there but would like to see it. Is it in Matthews County?

Louisa Hughes Armistead, my great-great grandmother, is buried in the same cemetery as her husband, Lt. Col George Armistead.
The cemetery is Old St. Paul's Episcopal cemetery. They are all buried in the Hughes family burial area. A plaque outside the cemetery identifies it as the cemetery where George Armistead and his newphew, Lewis, are buried. I've been there many times. Please refer to the "Guardian of The Star Spangled Banner" by Scott Sheads for accurate information regarding my ancestors. Thank you.

In the Hughes Vault in St Pauls Churchyard in Baltimore are buried and listed on the large stone over the vault: Christopher Hughes and his wife Peggy (who married in 1779), 9 of their children who all seem to have died quite young, Mary (who was George Hughes' wife died in 1838)and seems to have died with Henry, their son in childbirth. there. Also Peggy Moore who died in 1843 at age 57. (Peggy was another daughter of Christopher and Peggy who had married Samuel Moore). That is where the stone ends.(runs out of space). I suspect many others may be in the vault. For certain Major George Armistead is there and now has a stone in the front of the vault as does Lewis Addison Armistead, his nephew, who's body was brought there from Gettysburg by Christopher Hughes, one of George's sons. I find it unlikely that Christopher Hughes Armistead or his mother Louisa Hughes Armistead was buried there. We will need to track their whereabouts after George's death.

The question I was trying to answer was where were Louisa and Christopher Hughes Armistead buried and was it in the Hughes Vault at St Paul's Churchyard. Do you know where Christopher was buried? I have Scott's book I provided the info to him for the Armistead cemetery in Upperville

Thanks for the Walton information.
I am curious about the name Lockey, Lockie, Locky etc. where did that name come from?
It pops up a lot in the descendants.
Phoebe Walton Armistead had a sister Lockey T. Walton Bradley. Phoebe Armistead named one of her daughters Locky Jane and her sister, Mary Armistead Blackwell, named her daughter Locky Jane. Thomas G. Walton had a sister named Lockey Walton. There is a Lockey Tabb -- Lockey Langhorne -- Lockey Glover -- Lockey Scruggs -- Lockey Douglass -- Lockey Ann McDaniel -- Lockey Ann Sandeford It goes on and on.

Thanks, Karen

C. Hughes Armistead was my gr-great grandfather, and married Agnes Campbell Gordon, daughter of Samuel Gordon of Kenmore in Fredericksburg, VA. Unfortunately I am not sure where they are buried. If not in St. Paul's, perhaps in Greenmount Cemetery. The couple had quite a few children; if anyone is interested, reply to this and I'll provide as much information as possible.
