Don't know if this is relevant or not, but there was a Johann Gottfried Arens/Arends in Lincoln County NC in the 1790 and 1800 censuses. I am researching a similar name sometimes spelled Arndt or Arn and it is listed as Orm on the index for 1790 census. John Gottfried apparently was from Hanover, Germany and came over in the mid 1780s, I believe, to teach school for the German community in North Carolina and was ordained; apparently also a physician. You can google the name and pull up information if you are interested.

Re: Arn family of Durrn, Germany

Hello:

Sorry it has taken us awhile to reply. I checked the main information in our Arn family tree and came up with the following.Since these families tended to be very large, she is likely related to ours in some way. Here is a brief outline of what we have on the Arn family tree related to my husband;

Johannes Arn (born circa 1646 in Switzerland) died May 23, 1702 in Durrn, Germany. He married Katharine Klumpp circa 1685 in Durrn. So, as you can see by these two names, you are likely very definitely related to my husband's family. We have no idea who Joannes Arn's siblings or parents are nor do we know who Katharine Klumpp's parents or siblings are. This is likely where yours fits in with ours.

Johannes Arn and Katharine Klumpp had six children that we know of (there may have been more that we do not know of). The ones we know of were the following:
Juliana (b.c. 1692, Johann Michael b. 1693, Eva b. 1695, Martin b. 1696 (died 1757), Catharina b.c.1698, Anna Barbara b.1701.

My husband's family are descended from the Martin Arn who married a second wife in 1742. His name appears to be Hans Martin and he was born Dec. 28, 1696. He married twice. The first wife was Katharina Schlegel (22 Feb. 1724) but it is from his second wife Regina Catharina (1742)that my husband is descended from. As Hans Martin died in 1757, there must have been another generation down where our Cornelius (Kornelius) fits in as he was not born until May 13, 1795. He married August 8, 1816 to Karoline Wilhelmina Bossert on August 8, 1816. Kornelius had two siblings named Johann Jacob and Daniel.Kornelius/Cornelius was a farmer in Durrn in 1836, a Burgomaster in 1837 in Durrn and in 1850 he emigrated to Canada. He died in Canada in 1866. He had 17 children but 7 died young.

Now here is something interesting. You said that your Mathias Klump married an Ernestine Arn. Well, back in the 17th century, our Hans Martin Arn (who was born 28 Dec. 1696), had a brother Johann Michael who was born 1 October 1693 and married May 10 1718 Anna Barbara Schafer (Johann Michael Arn died in 1760). One of their children was named Ernestina (she was born 1741 and is the youngest of their 10 children that we have listed. Here are the names of all of Johann Michael Arn and Anna Barbara Schafer's children:
Catharine Barbara 1719, Johannes 1721, Margaretha 1722, Anna Rosina 1726, Anna Eva 1728, Johann Michael 1730, Maria Salome 1732, Jacob Fredericke 1734, Daniel 1736 and then Ernestina 1741. So perhaps this Ernestina is your ancestor!

Hope this is not too confusing and that it helps somewhat!

Best regards,
Susan and Bob Arn
London Ontario Canada

I am am also a descendant of Mathias Klump (1 Sept 1831). My Great-Great-Grandmother is Missouri Belle Klump Wells (12 Nov 1854) of Ohio and Illinois. Missouri Belle is the Grand-daughter of Mathias Klumpp and Austeina (Ernestine) Arn. I am trying to decipher the lineage and I'm finding it difficult. The bit of information you have provided below is already infinitely helpful. Any more info or leads would be greatly appreciated.

In turn I would be happy to share what I have found, including more names of the family.

Thanks!

Hello All,

I am looking for anyone that has any information on Joseph William Arn born 22 October 1881 in Clarington, Monroe County, Ohio to Felix Arn and Sophia Schwin. Joseph was also known as Joe Arn. Joe married Dessie "Mary Ann" "Mollie L." Debolt on 16 May 1906 in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. Joe died on 31 January 1975 in Columbiana, Columbiana County, Ohio and is bured in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Mahoning County, Ohio.

I have seen some information for Felix and Sophia Arn on the net but their children never include Joseph. I have records that state that these are his parents and Joe Arn is listed as a survivor in Felix Arn's obituary.

I am not researching the entire Arn family, only this Joseph William Arn since he married into my Debolt family. His wife Mollie (Debolt) Arn is the sister to my Great-Grandmother.

Anyone with any information on this particular Arn family member, I would really like to hear from you.
I am a descendent of Mathias Klump, born 9/01/1831 in Durrn. I believe his father was Mathias Klumpp, born 1/24/1789 and that his mother was Ernestine Arn, whose parents were Martin Arn & Rosine Barth. Ernestine Arn was born 10/10/1807. Rosine Barth's dad was Absolm Barth. There's a note indicating Martin Arn & Rosine Barth were divorced. Mathias Klumpp also married a woman whose last name was Arn and fathered 3 kids + Mathias Klump: Absolm Klump (born 8/22/1823 in Durrn), Ernestine Klump (born 6/24/1836) & Michael Klumpp (b. 2/27/1839 d. 3/7/1839 in Durrn) This information came from Lutheran Church records. I hope this is accurate & helpful. I can furnish more about MAthias Klump & his descendants. lk

I have a funeral card for Herman Jacob Arn. His funeral was held in 1949 in Columbiana, Ohio, my home town. I found it in my grandfather's bible (Joseph William Arn). My grandfather had 12 or 16 siblings (depending on whom you ask), but this person was not one of them. (I have a large family tree that identifies nearly all of them.) I have been wondering who he is and why I never heard of him before. I have never heard of Grace Arn before either.

Arn family of Durrn, Germany

I have information on my husband's branch of Arns who emigrated from Durrn, Germany on October 28, 1850. They eventually settled in the Delhi, Ontario area of Canada via the Erie Canal. They had landed on February 14, 1851 in Hobochen, New Jersey, U.S.A. The family that emigrated from Durrn was Kornelius Arn (born 1795) his wife Karoline Wilhelmene Bossert Arn (born 1797) and nine or ten of their seventeen children. The remainder of the children died young and are buried in Germany.

Kornelius had been a farmer in Durrn in 1836 and a 'burgomaster' in 1837. His grandfather is 'supposedly' a Martin Arn (born 1696, died 1753, married 1742(second wife) Regina Catharina).

Two of Kornelius Arn's siblings were 'supposedly' named Johann Jacob and Daniel.

Kornelius Arn's great grandfather was 'supposedly' Johannes Arn who was born circa 1646 in Switzerland, died May 23, 1702 Durrn, Germany & married Katharine Klumpp.

Any information on these distant branches would be most welcome.

Yes We are talking about the same family. My Boyce's came to MI.settled in sanilac CO. toin the 1880's. Chauncy A.,& Hannah Boyce. The arns may have ended up in Wexford CO.to. Altho the only one I know for sure is Willemina. I'm trying to find out what her married name is. Your Magdalena may have lived around Cadillac,I know My Dad had a Aunt Lena, which could be a short verstion of her name.I'm trying to get in touch with my aunt in Cadillac to see what she might remember.

These Arns are a tough lot to find information on. My g-g-grandmother was Magdalena Arn who married James Frederick Brown in 1862 in Ontario, later moving to Argyle, Sanilac County, Michigan. There is a really interesting website that has "pioneer sketches" from the Norfolk area and includes a comment that Cornelius Arn had 4 sons - Cornelius, Ely, John, and Charles. If you are interested, I found it really interesting reading about life in their day and time.

http://the-burgers.rootsweb.com/introduction.html

I also checked and had pulled your Charles F. Arn as a probable son of Cornelius from the 1881 Ontario census, where he is living with Lucinda and several children (Watts E., Willemina S., Adell, and Charles Burt). You probably already have this reference, but I have to say that I'm sure we're talking the same family.
That is very possible. I don't have anything else on that family. You are the first and only link I have found to them. Except my Dad said he remembered an aunt minnie, which I figured to be Willemina. She lived in Hobart MI. Only one of my Dads sisters is still living. She said she doesn't remember all the names, but there was a lot of g.aunts&uncles. She was born in 1929,so she probly doesn't. I haven't been able to find out anything about them. But I'm not giving up.

So I suspect that your Charles F. Arn may well be the Karl Friedrich that I listed (since Charles Frederick would be one translation). I have him born June 2, 1833 so the dates are close. Definitely worth more research!

I would be surprised if there wasn't some relationship here, but I don't think your William was a brother, perhaps a nephew since there was a big age range in her siblings. Here's what I've learned about this family since my original posting:

Cornelius Arn m. Karoline Wilhelmina Bossert in 1816 in Germany. They came to Canada in/about 1850.
Children:

Regina Barbara Arn (b. Dec 12, 1816)
Cornelius Arn (b. March 27, 1818)
Carolina Catherina Arn (b. March 27, 1818)
Cornelius Arn (b. June 26, 1821)
Wilhelmine Arn (b. Sept. 17, 1822)
Regina Barbara Arn (b. August 1, 1824)
Regina Barbara Arn (b. March 19, 1826)
Magdalena Arn (b. May 21, 1827)
Elias Arn (b. October 31, 1828)
Karl Friedrich Arn (b. June 2, 1833)
Philippine Arn (b. June 3, 1833)
Juliana Arn (b. August 31, 1834)
Philippina Arn (b. February 23, 1836)
Christian Arn (b. July 14, 1837)
Magdalena Arn (b. November 10, 1839)
Rosina Arn (b. March 11, 1841)
Magdalena Arn (b. December 6, 1842)

I don't have much more information on this family, especially the siblings. Seems like I might have some information on the son, Cornelius's family, but will have to look for it. I originally thought that my Magdalena was his son (and he has children older than her!). When was your William born?
Hi there! And thank you so much for sharing what you've found on her. It will reduce my researching up the wrong tree, as we also have a Katherine (Katie) Arn in our family and so far, I've found not a thing on her.

I have been rudely awakened by the number of different ARN branches there are in this country, after having lived most of my life believing our family of Arn's were the only ones. We're certainly not...my dad just moved way far away from the rest of them! Our ancestors appear to have clustered around Arnheim, Ohio and the Maysville, Ky areas. But I've just learned my grandfather, Dr. Fred Arn, took off for Illinois and lived there until he died in 1940.

Thanks again for your information on Katherine!

John Arn

I don't know the parents' names but I was wondering if you know his children's names. My grandmother's name was Helene Arn and her ancestors were from Switzerland, but I don't know their names. She had about 9 or 10 brothers and sisters - Robert Edward, Mary(Myrtle), Rudy, Martha, and I can't remember the rest. Does any of this sound like it is related to your John Arn?
