My maternal great grandfather is Lawrence Garfield black (1881)
And I am uncertain that his father is George bridges Alexander black! I know his father is George Alex black! I can only find records for George bridges black with having son called Lawrence J black!! Not Lawrence G black!! Everything does tally but the middle initial!! Do you know what this J stands for? Did 'J' s in those days resemble 'G's?? Or am I being too exact??

My mums (Powell/warren) mum was called Florence dawn black(warren) who married Alexander Erskine warren. Florence dawn blacks dad was called Lawrence Garfield black who married hazel maud dunnet (Florence's mum)

Hi, are you still looking for info? I spent ages looking at all the Arnalls in the 1841 census and found what may be your family. George with Caroline in 1841 and Mary Bayley, shopkeeper, 35, his sister in law (according to the 1861 census). George's wife was Elizabeth Bailey - married in Stratton, Cornwall in 1803. Their children were: George, 1813, William 1814, James 1815, Elizabeth Bayley, 1817, Mary Ann 1819, Caroline 1824 (2 Apr). An Elizabeth Arnall b 1785 was buried 2 Jun 1824, age 39 in Stratton. George was baptised 5 Dec 1784 son of Christopher & Mary. George died on 5 March 1867, a mason aged 83, probate proved on 10 April in Bodmin, effect under £100 (on ancestry). My ancestors are Elizabeth Bickle and Frederick Arnall who are at separate addresses in 1841 then he disappears, although she has 6 more children! I haven't found a connection with your George(my Fred was illegitimate s/o Catherine Arnall, d/o John & Elizabeth). My Elizabeth was b Stratton, & her mother was b Grace Bailey also in Stratton so we may be connected through the Baileys. Some of this is from cornwall opc and some from findmypast. The different spellings and bad transcriptions of Arnall and Bayley make it tricky. Hope that's useful. best wishes, Gill

He had one brother that I knew of, who lived in Tipton St. John, Devon. My brother, William (not sure of YoB)now lives in Delabole, Cornwall. Billy, had two brothers, Fred and Jackie, and a sister, Frances, now all deceased.

Arnalls of Cornwall/Preston/Liverpool

My father, now 81, has spent 35+ years researching our family name and has traced a line back to Mawgan in Pyder, Cornwall in the 1600s. The family later moved to Camelford, then to Truro and then scattered in all directions. Our line of the family moved to Preston, Lancashire, where my father was born. Others moved to London, Liverpool and Canada.

If anyone with connections to Cornwall would like to get in touch with us, please e-mail me and I'll pass it on to my father Deryck Arnall. He has a lot research, which we'd like to pass on, especially whilst my Dad is alive - he is the expert on the family tree. My knowledge is limited. Hope he can help someone with their research.

He also has information on connected families - i.e. The Rushforths, Grahams and Jacksons from Northumberland. Sorry if this is a bit vague.

Thanks

Sue Arnall

Arnall Family in Camelford, Cornwall

I am seeking information on the following people:
Mary Ann ARNALL - born 1819-1822 in Cornwall, her father was George ARNALL, a hotelkeeper. Mary Ann emigrated to Australia about 1840 and married David KELLER. The 1841 Census records a George ARNALL living in Fore St Camelford, aged 55 with (presumably daughter) Caroline, aged 15. As Mary Ann had a daughter Caroline I am guessing that this may be the George who was her father and that Caroline may be her sister. There are still ARNALLs in Fore St Camelford in the 1861 Census. I would like to try and establish if this George is indeed her father, and any other information about the family.
thanks

Thank you so much!!! I've dug through so many records and spent so much time in libraries trying to find something, and over the last few years have never had any success at all or found any other person who could help... this is the very information I've been looking for, and this definitely sounds like the right family, I can't thank you enough for this help! I'll definitely check my library for the book too... I've tried looking at different Arnold connections, thinking there might be more on Arnall families if I researched Arnolds, but all the books I had checked so far didn't appear to be linked to our family. I knew William Henry Arnall came from VA, but I never could link him to any other family there although there is another Arnall family up there at the right time period in Hanover VA who I suspect is related in some shape or form but I have no evidence to justify that suspicion. Here's a link to information about that family http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~daa/genealogy/henrysrarn.html

I really can't thank you enough for this information on the Arnalls, I've wanted this information so much, and hadn't been able to find anything til you. :)

The following info was taken from the book "Martin-Arnold and Allied Families" by Mary Kaufman Arnold: ...........................
pg 146: William Arnall born circa 1765 in VA. Died 1832 in Walton Co, GA. He was the son of JOSHUA ARNALL & PRISCILLA (surname unknown). He married first AGNES GHOLSTON, dau of JOHN GHOLSTON & ANN PETTUS. Children of Wm. & Agnes: ................................................
Nancy Eggleston .........................................................
Martha Agness ...........................................................
Overton H. ...................................................................
*Henry Johnson ............................................................
John Gholston .............................................................
+Joshua Pendleton .......................................................
Francis Marion .............................................................
Daughter (name unk) .....................................................
Mary "Polly" .................................................................
Maryan ........................................................................
pg 138: "Of William ARNOLD's children, only one spelled the name ARNALL, John Gholson Arnall. That may or may not have been the original spelling. In the early records of Wilkes Co, GA, it is spelled both ways" (Arnall/ARNOLD). On page 150-151 the book lists 11 children for John Gholston & Ann Miles (Gibbs) Arnall. You might check your local library to see if they have this book. ....................The book's author is a descendant of +Joshua Pendleton ARNOLD. I am a descendant of *Henry Johnson ARNOLD. Have you learned anything new since you posted your original query?.......Dan

Thanks for responding. My grandfather was named Walker Arnall but who I knew as Hugh Walker Arnelle (when the spelling changed I don't know)According to his Social Security application, he was born January 29, 1893 in Denver Colorado to Moses Arnall and Lillian Varner. However, his WW I discharge paper give his birthplace as Uniontown, Pa. (go figure) I should add that my family is African-American. Hope we're related!
Dee Dee Arnelle

Letitia Arnall is my ancestor. She was born 3 Oct 1856 in London, Buckingham, England and married James Booth Walton before immigrating to the United States. Letitia's mother was Sarah Hannah Arnall but no father has been found. Sarah's parents were Thomas Arnall and Laetitia Hope. I don't have much information about Thomas Arnall or his family. I do know that Sarah's sister Jane married a Carter and immigrated to New Zealand where she died. Any assistance you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I will share whatever information I have.

You may contact me by email at junco@silverstar.com

Sorry, unfortunately, as far as I've gone, there aren't any records of who William Henry Arnall's wife was. I keep looking under various rocks and stones, but it's as if she didn't exist.

I recently posted another message on the Genealogy.com Arnall message forum with a summary of all I've found on this branch. I think it is mostly a repeat of what I've posted on this forum, but I think I may have tossed in a few extra details. The message is in reply to someone's request of information on a Jonathan Gholston Arnall, who I believe he had confused with John Gholston Arnall.

Are you also descended from John Gholston Arnall? I've wondered if William H. Arnall had any other children, but all the descendants I've ever run across were through John Gholston Arnall.

My line is:
William H. Arnall
John Gholston Arnall
Joshua Fleming Arnall
Luther Edwards Arnall
Carolyn Arnall, my grandmother

Re: Arnall's Virginia/Georgia

Thank you for your informative reply. The fact that our Arnall ancestors might have changed their names to "Arnold" from time to time is intriguing, especially since I have links to both Arnolds and Arnalls in Coweta County, Georgia.

John Gholston Arnall was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan, Georgia. When I find the picture of his gravestone (I need to index these things.), I will send it to you in an email. Many Arnalls are buried in Oak Hill, including Governor Arnall. Governor Arnall was a part of the infamous three-governor controversy in Georgia a few decades ago. He was Georgia's youngest Governor. There are several renown stories about this storied Governor if you are interested.

'My line from William H. is:

1) William H.Arnall
2) John Gholston Arnall
3) Elizabeth Gibbs Arnall b. 6-27-1825 d. 10-29-92
4) Millard Courtney Farmer b. 4-1859 d. 1911
5) My paternal grandmother Sarah Farmer b. 4-15-1897 d. 1-5-1984

Millard Courtney Farmer's wife was Mollie Arnold, my great grandmother. Hence the cross in the Arnall/Arnold lines in Coweta County. The "Gholston" name reappears as a middle name in the Farmer line.

Thank you again for the info, cousin.

Arnall's Virginia/Georgia

I am a descendant of a William Henry Arnall. The only things I have on him are these two sources:

According to "Coweta County Chronicles" p. 590 "...William H. Arnall of Va. came to Ga. before 1800 riding on horseback. He settled in Butts Co. where John Gholston Arnall was born Dec. 16th, 1811..." (I've found other sources that give 12-6-1811 as John Gholston Arnall's dob, not sure which is right)

According to "History of Coweta County" p.191 the Arnall family's roots are in Redruth Cornwall, England. Some of the family migrated to Hanover Co. Va in the 1700's and some of them went to Missouri. William Henry Arnall went to Butts Co. in the late 1700's.

I have lots on the descendants of John Gholston Arnall, but so far I can't find anything else on William Henry Arnall anywhere, either in death records, cemetery records, census records, or anywhere else in Virginia or Georgia. Does anyone have anything on him?

Casie,

Today, I came across your message of Tuesday, November 14, 2000. Don't know how I missed it, when you originally sent the message.

I'm fairly sure that our "Arnall's" are connected somehow, being that they lived in-and-around Wright City. You mention that your grandfather was Frank Leroy Arnall. If had included his date of birth and date of death, it would have giving me something to work with at the Clayton Genealogy Library here in Houston, Texas. If you've made any progress, on the Arnall line, since November I'd like to hear from you. As I may be able to find additional information at the Clayton Genealogical Library.
