I am researching the Arndt family and recently got my great grandmother's birth certificate; it is in German, however, I think it says her Dad, Carl, was from Gagern, Rugen and her mother Caroline Risch Arndt was from Gingst, Rugen; they came to the US in 1891 and went to Illinois. Let me know if you think there is any link with your ancestors. Thanks!

I have been researching my Orren line and it led me to Jacob Orren whose name was given as Orange in 1860 Washington County TN census. My ggg grandfather was Peter Washington Orren who I believe to be Jacob Orren, erroneously listed as Orange in 1860, born in Lincoln Co NC per 1840 Caldwell Co NC census, in Wilkes Co NC in 1840 and 1830 as Jacob Orren listed ORNDS or ONDS on index, in Burke Co NC in 1820 per daughter's birthplace on 1850 census, appears on Lincoln census 1820 as Jacob ARNT, 1810 Lincoln Census as Jacob Aurent and I believe he is in household of John Arant in Lincoln Co NC in 1800. All these fit with the age Jacob would have been in each year, and if I remember anything about prob and stats is just too much of a coincidence not to be him. I am now looking for information on the John Orren whom I believe to be his father. Hope this helps someone!

I am researching the family of Herman and Bertha Arndt, who were in Steele County, MN. I found your family, William and Wilhelmina Homuth, in Steele County, Summit Twp., in 1880. I'm wondering if the three sisters you mention had a brother named Herman?

Herman's daughter Emelia was the first wife of my grandfather William Rypka. Supposedly they divorced, and Emelia later married William Paukert, who was her second cousin, according to their marriage license.

The children of Herman and Bertha Arndt: Carl,Emma, Emelia, August, Herman.

Re: William Arndt and wife Minnie, in Niagara Co., NY

Hi, Just looking at the Censuses for ARNDT and saw your William and Minnie ARNDT.
The 1880 Census (July 5, 1880):Newfane, Niagara Co., NY
Wm. ARNDT, 36 - farmer- Germany.
Minnie 36 - wife - Germany; Wm. Jnr.(junior) 11 - son - Germany; Minnie 10 - daughter -NY; Louise 6 - daug. - NY; Ida 5 - daug. - NY; Frank 3 - son - NY; Charles 1 - son - NY. They are dwelling #43/ Family #42. There is a Bessie in Newfane, servant, age 13. Could be their daughter too.
There are many ARNDT families living in the adjacent Erie County, NY.

1900 US CENSUS: Newfane, Niagara,NY Dwelling#205/ Family#207
William- Jan 1844 -56 - married 32 years - GER GER GER Emigration -1869 and Naturalized - farmer.
Minnie- Apr 1845? married 32 years - Ger Ger Ger - Emigration 1869
William Jr.- Aug 1868 son Single Ger Ger Ger Emigration 1869 and Naturalized - farm laborer
Frank- May 1876 son Single NY GER GER farm laborer
Fred- Aug 1883 son Single NY GER GER farm laborer
? (can't read it) Jul 1891 daug. Single NY GER GER

Their daughter Ida is single, living in Lockport, age 25.
There is an August ARNDT in Lewiston, Niagara, NY age 40 GER; emigration 1890, wife is Mary; daughters Ida and Theresa.
*There may be other ARNDTs who aren't head of families who aren't listed. For instance:
There is William STREBLOW/STRABLOW who is married to Wilhelmine "Minnie" Auguste R. BERGEMANN,He is living in Lewiston, Niagara Co., NY also. His mother was Maria Dorothea Johanna ARNDT, most likely the daughter of Charles ARNDT, not the sister. She was born in Lapitz, Mechlenburg-Schwerin, 1844. She and her husband Christian STREBLOW came over in 1884, as did Charles ARNDT. The 1910 US CENSUS calls Charles ARNDT the grandfather of William STRABLOW, mentioned above. That would make Maria his sister then. He is 82 years old in 1910. So I believe the 1900 CENSUS mistakenly called Charles the uncle of William. The above Maria (ARNDT) STRABLOW is living with her daughter's husband Albert JACOBS and daugter Frieda in Wilson, NIagara Co., NY in 1900. So Frieda is William STRABLOW's sister.
Could your William ARNDT be the son of Charles (probably correctly named Carl/Karl) ARNDT, b. abt. 1827? or the uncle?

1910 US CENSUS: Niagara Co., NY
N. Tonawanda, NY - There is a Charles ARNDT, 42, GER, emigrated in 1871. Married to Bertha.

Newfane, NY -Fred ARNDT, 29 and wife Ida, and daug. Dora infant. -Frank ARNDT, 32 NY, and wife Anna and her mother. -William Jr., 41, GER. - and wife "Minnie", 38, daug. Ida,4, and son Walter, 4 mos. Says married for 2 years. His first marriage, her second. So is Ida her daughter from former marriage? Also living there is Charles SCHRADER, age 16, a hired man.
-William (Sr,), 66, GER. - wife Berta, 43 NY, and children Minnie, Herman,Bertha, and Jonnie. Berta is a second marriage of 1 year in 1880.

By the way, there is a Thomas STROEDER in Buffalo, Erie, NY on the 1900 US CENSUS. He is 35, born Prussia, emigrated in 1882. Wife is Mary.

1875 CENSUS of Newfane, NY - ARNDT #527.
Hope this helps.

Arndt - Germany to Iowa

Looking for information re: Hermann Arndt, b. abt. 1843 in Germany. According to Census records, wife's name is Wilhelmina (b. abt 1853 in Germany). Eight Children, apparently all born in Webster County, Iowa from 1874 to 1893. Hermann came to USA in 1869 and Wilhelmina in 1872. I found a marriage record for Dec 30, 1872 in Webster Cty. -- Herman Arndt to "Minnie" Calder --- this doesn't make sende to me. In 1895 had 7 children living with them in Newark, Webster, IA and also Herman's Mother-In-Law, Caroline Derscheid. One of Herman's daughters married a Christ Frederich (Fred)Derscheid abt. 1899. Any information is appreciated that would help me identify Wilhelmina and roots in Germany for both Herman and Wilhelmina.

I'm afraid I don't have any information to help you... but maybe you can help me. I'm researching my 2nd great grandfather Gustav Emil Arndt, born Sept 12 1867 in Posen. His brother Henry Arndt was born March 1853. Their mother was possibly a Buelow. They emigrated to the US in approximately 1885. Do you know if they were possibly related to the names listed in your post?

Dear Emily, We are probably distant cousins.
You can obtain a copy of their parent’s marriage certificate at:

http://bindweed.man.poznan.pl/posen/search.php

The marriage record shows:
Protestant community in Witkowo, entry # 43 in 1845
Johann Friedrich Arndt (age 25) His father: Christoph Arndt
Anna Susanne Buelow (age 24) Her father: Johann Buelow

The IGI showw they had at least 8 children in Lenzec, Sierakowo and Strzalkowo, Kreis Witkowo, Posen. Other children may have been born 1859-1866 in villages not filmed by the LDS.

4. Wilhelm August ARNDT -
Gender: Male Birth: 18 SEP 1846 Witkowo, Posen, Preussen

3. Caroline ARNDT -
Gender: Female Birth: 22 MAY 1850 Lenzec, Witkowo,Pozen

5. Heinrich ARNDT -
Gender: Male Birth: 11 MAR 1853 Strzalkowo,Witkowo, Posen

2. Auguste ARNDT -
Gender: Female Birth: 23 JAN 1856 Strzalkowo, Posen, Preussen

1. Anna Emilie ARNDT -
Gender: Female Birth: 12 DEC 1858 Strzalkowo, Posen, Preussen

6. Gustav Emil ARNDT -
Gender: Male Birth: 12 SEP 1867 Sierakowo,Witkowo, Posen

It is important to find these villages on the map. They may have had populations under 300, but there are many extant records. It is possible that Johann and Anna Arndt moved away from Kreis Witkowo from 1858-1867. That would explain the 9 year break in the children’s births.

If you follow the lives of all siblings, you may find that several relatives emigrated to the US on the same boat, before 1892. This would include the 1885 period, in which you believe your Arndts arrived in the US. Records for NYC before 1892, when Ellis Island became the entry port, are available at:

http:www.castlegarden.org

Here are some possible cousins, who may also have emigrated?

Heinrich ARNDT
Birth: 15 AUG 1853 Wylatkowo, Witkowo, Posen, Preussen
Christening:
Death:
Father: Ludwig ARNDT
Mother: Anna Christine ALBRECHT

HEINRICH CARL ARNDT
Birth: 05 FEB 1853
Christening: 08 FEB 1853 Schwersens, Posen, Preussen
Death:
Father: GOTTLIEB ARNDT one of my ancestral cousins
Mother: ANNA CAROLINE REICH

GUSTAV EMIL ARNDT
Birth: 28 AUG 1869
Christening: 05 SEP 1869 Glashuette Filehne, Posen, Preussen
Death:
Father: FRIEDRICH ARNDT
Mother: HENRIETTE MATHWIG [see other spellings]

=======================

Thank you so much for the information. It is very helpful. This family of Arndts seem to be a myser. I've not been able to connect the Arndts in Niagara County to those in Erie County.

I was told that William Arndt, (36 in the 1880 census) had a brother Frank, that moved out of state after they had a falling out.

According to what I found about Charles Arndt, son of William, Charles married Agnes Nicholson, and they had no children. This is the only Charles I have found in this family.

The Bessie Arndt possibly could be "Bertha", William's oldest daughter from a prevous marriage. Possibly Bessie is a nickname for Bertha. She married a Seelow. I've been exploring the idea that this spelling may be incorrect or a variation of Streblow.

One other mystery is that I found my great grandmother Minnie Arndt (m. William Miller) buried under the name Miller, but in parenthesis it says (Schepler). We have found no documents or references to her being previously married.

None of the names you mention sound familiar to me, however, I have a Richard Arndt, parents were Ferdinand and Mathilda. Richard came from Germany, lived in Wisconsin where he met and "married" Emma Timm, had a son, Otto, and then settled in Cleveland, OH as well. Perhaps there is some relation? I am not entirely sure of siblings or other relatives, but it is worth checking out.
Ida Sadie A Arndt b. WI

I've just scanned "The Story of the Arndts: Descendants of Bernard Arndt, immigrant 1731" by John Stover Arndt, 1922. Mostly it's about PA family, and one mention of Ida Arndt d/o Henry Arndt and Sarah Haldeman. This Ida is b.in PA, married John Koch and lived in Moore, Northampton, PA. "My" Ida said to have been born in Wisconsin about 1859.

There were two Arndts from PA who went to Green Bay, WI: John Penn Arndt, born Bucks CO., PA 1780 m. Elizabeth Carpenter of NJ and moved to Green Bay in 1824, both died there, 1861, 1860.

Edward Wilcox Arndt, s/o John Wallace Arndt and Mary Catherine Wilcox (not my branch of Wilcoxes)was born Green Bay 1845 (p.301) and started a habit of wintering in Bahamas and Florida. Neither Ida nor a similar name is named as a child of either of these. I also checked for Sadie and possible names for which Sadie would be a nickname .

I checked censuses for Ida, born about 1859 in WI, and
closest finds were:
1880 WI, Ida Arnnt, 17, a servant, born in (hard to read Prussia P K) living in the home of Herman Geise.
1890 Census shows Ida Arndt, 42 (b.in Manitowoc, WI) but as daughter of Head of House Wagner, a 66 year old farmer born in Germany, parents also born Germany. Two nephews present.
1910 Census Chicago, shows Ida Wilcox age 45 born Sweden, divorced, immigrated 1890, keeps a lodging house, has an 18 year old daughter Edith Hojel(unclear middle letter) born in North Dakota.
1910 NY has Ida Wilcox age 54, Cansteo, Steuben Co., mother-in-law, 16 years of previous marriage, born NY, both parents born NY.
1920 Ida Wilcox is head of house she rents, is a 54 year old seamstress born in NY, mother born in Sweden. Daughter Edith has married Norman Deno.

I sifted, and these are the most likely. Or one or two Ida's kept changing their stories! Interesting that there's a Wilcox link before she even met my great-uncle, and that they are different branches - or branch apart in 1700's or earlier CT.
Thanks for even reading this!

No, that's the problem. She's not a real relative, and he's a great uncle. I haven't sent away to Jefferson County for death certificates. $ Wait, an aha moment, maybe I can find it through HeritageQuest (which I just discovered I can access thanks to my library). I'm off into Internet land.

Thanks for your reply, I'll let you know.
Mary

Arndt, Jakob - born Germany or France (Alsace)

Does anyone have more information on this family? Thanks.

Jakob (Jacob) Arndt was born about 1810 in Germany or France, married to Margaretha (maiden name unknown, perhaps Lemmel was born 25 Nov 1811 in France. (On the 1880 census of Louisville, KY, Jacob’s and Margaretha’s daughter Margaret lists her parents birthplace as Alsace.) Jacob’s and Margaretha’s marriage date and place is unknown. Jacob was naturalized 05 Oct 1855. His papers state he immigrated in 1847, was 44 years old, was from France, debarked from Havre, France and disembarked in New Orleans, LA. The 1850 census of Harrison County, IN, District 45, taken 04 Sept 1850, lists him, his wife Margaretha, and daughters Margaret and Mary (their ages were 40, 39, 8 and 2 respectively).

Hello,
I don't know of any brothers of my great grandmother, Wilhelmiene Arndt Homuth, but in checking the census with regard to Herman and Bertha Arndt, it appears Herman immigrated about the same time as my great grandparents, William & Wilhelmiene (Arndt) Homuth. My grandmother, Wilhelmiene was born, 26 October 1849 at Bärfelde, Kreis County, Prussia. William & Wilhelmiene were married, 27 September 1871 at Gerzlow, Brandenburg, Prussia They also immigrated in 1872. Please let me know if you find a connection.

In checking further I found this information about Herman Arndt in the Dalby database:

http://www.dalbydata.com/user.php?action=resultobits

Arndt Herman Owatonna People's Press 22/Dec/1922 Herman Arndt, 74, died last Friday afternoon at 1:50 at his home on East School street following a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Arndt was born in Germany on November 11, 1848, and grew to manhood there. He came to America in the spring of 1872 and for a short time lived in Chicago, coming to Owatonna in the fall of the same year. On November 8, 1872, he married Miss Bertha Rosin and to them were born five children. Mr. Arndt is survived by his wife; three sons, Charles of Medford, Herman and August of this city, and two daughters, Mrs. W. Paukert and Mrs. Peter Ganser of this city, besides a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Oak Street German Lutheran church Monday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. C. Winter officiating. Interment was made in the Forest Hill cemetery.
