Helen Johanna Kaufmann, daughter of James and Clara (Engstrom) Arney was born April 8, 1914 on the family farm near Genoa, NE. Helen was baptized into the Lutheran Faith on November 3, 1935. She lived near Genoa until the third grade, when her family moved to a farm 5.5 miles south of St. Edward, NE. Helen attended elementary school at District 54 and graduated from St. Edward High School in 1932. She kept house for her brother Edwin until 1934.
On April 4, 1934, Helen was united in marriage to Jacob Kaufmann at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church east of St. Edward, NE. The couple made their home on a farm 1 mile east of St. Edward until 1956 when they purchased Jake’s family’s farm. Helen was a homemaker while raising her children, and later took jobs as the head cook at nursing homes in Albion, NE and Fullerton, NE. Jake died in 1993, and Helen moved to Lincoln, NE in 1994.
Helen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Albion from 1956-1985, and Trinity Lutheran Church from 1985-present. She taught Sunday School and Bible School, lead 4-H clubs, and later volunteered at Mickle Middle School in Lincoln, NE. She was a member of quilting clubs, the Extension Club and AARP. Helen enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking, and won many prizes at the county fair. While living in Lincoln, she enjoyed the companionship of her cat, Simba. Most of all, she was a devoted wife and mother.
She is survived by two children: Janice Moore and husband Byron of Grand Island, NE; Lynn Kaufmann and wife Jane of Lincoln, NE; two grandchildren: Brad Kaufmann and wife Aaryn of Olathe, KS; Beth Kaufmann of Overland Park, KS; 3 cousins: Edward Engstrom of Genoa, NE; Lyle Engstrom of St. Edward, NE; Dorthey Carstenson of Tennessee; brother-in-law: Bill Kaufmann and wife Dorothy of Fremont, NE; sister-in-law: Emma Sutton of Fremont, NE.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jake in 1993, sister Mildred Schwartz and brother Edwin Arney.
