Russell County, AL Arrant Family

I descend from Peter and Frances Arrant via their son James Peter Arrant and his wife, Sarah Broughton; via their son John Anderson Arrant and his wife, Nancy Bush; via their son John Canty Arrant and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Thigpen; via their son Jesse Theodore Arrant. I would like to know if my Peter Arrant is the son of the Peter Arrant who died in Mississippi in the 1800's. I have read that he was, however I have not been able to locate any proof of this. I will gladly share info on the aforementioned line.
Thank you, Elizabeth Arrant Fisher (lynnliz2003@yahoo.com)

Peter & Frances Arrant - Russell County, AL

Is this "Peter Arrant" a son of the Peter Arrant that died in Mississippi? Does anyone on this board know when he died and where he is buried? I know that he died prior to the 1880 census, as Frances was listed as a widow and she was living with her widowed daughter, Sarah Crane.
I found no mention of this Peter Arrant in the book; 'Sacred to the Memory of the Ancestors of Russell County, Alabama', which was compiled by Phyllis W. East. The book does contain a listing for a Frances Arrant who is suppose to be buried at Union Primative Baptist Cemetery. Her headstone is reported to state that she was the "wife of Peter, and that she died Feb. 1883". I visited the cemetery last week hoping to find Peter's grave (In my research of other Russell County ancestor surnames, I had discovered several early 1900's burials which had not been recorded in that book) also. Not only did I not find Peter's, I couldn't locate Frances'.
I am trying to photograph the Arrant family member headstones that are in my line and would appreciate any info that will point me in the right direction. Thank you.
Elizabeth Arrant Fisher
(Jesse, John, John, James, Peter Arrant)

David,
Thank you so much for your reply. You just drove a sledge hammer through my "brick wall". I can hardly wait until my next trip to search cemeteries in Lee Co. Meanwhile..... do you think the info about Frances being buried at Primative Baptist (Russell Co.) is correct? Also, would you happen to know if her given name was Jenny Frances Gaunt, and perhaps called Fannie? I saw a "Fannie Arrant" on the 1883 Lee Co. Pensioners List and wondered if it could be Frances. I had really questioned my Peter Arrant being the son of the one who died in Miss., as he wasn't mentioned in the will. What a breakthrough you've given me! Thanks again.
Liz (lynnliz2003@yahoo.com)

We are having the same problem of connecting a father for James Monroe Arrant. William H. Arrant presents a problem for me because he seems to have been born and stayed until death in Maryland, and none of the other ancestors come from that area. Have you had any responses or found any more information concerning the parents of William Monroe Arrant? He was a greatgrandfather of my husband.

Been tracking down our Arrant line who originally was Arndt with a Johann Peter down the line. What we're having problem documenting is the Father of William M. Arrant born 15 August in 1856 Lee,Opelika, Alabama, USA died 9 February 1937 Ruston, Lincoln, Louisiana, USA. William M. was married to a Sara Ansaphronie Jenkins born 17 September 1860 in Opelika, Alabama, USA. died February 1937 in Ruston, Lincoln, USA.

We have that the Father could be a William H. Arrant or a William James but have not been able to confirm either through census records, registrys or the like. I believe my Aunt Claudia did come across a William James married to a young woman by the last name of Brown. But we're just not sure. The William H. Arrants that we have was born about 1820 and come from Elk Neck, Cecil Maryland but we need something to tie him directly to William M. Arrant. Any help anyone could give me would be great thanks, Laura

Hello,
My name is Pam Arrant and most of my fathers relatives are from Phenix City, Russell County, Alabama. I am not sure who Peter Arrant is but I do know that quite a few of the Arrant ancestors are buried at Shiloh Baptist Church in Opelika. It is pretty much a family cemetary. If you are still looking you might try that. I have just recently starting researching our family name and am having a bit of difficulty finding alot of information. My great grandparents were Will and Prannie. My grandparents were Maudie and Judson C. Arrant. My father is Theodore Vernon Arrant. If you have any information about these family members if it is the same family and are willing to share I would greatly appreciate any information. I can't imagine there to be no relation considering the unusual last name and also being from Russell County, Alabama. Please contact me at you leisure if you do have information. Thank you very much for your help.
Pam Arrant

Re: Russell County, AL Arrant Family

I have seen a varity of spellings for this surname on numerous records over the years, but not Arrington.
Arrant has been the spelling most consistantly used in my line since atleast the late 1700's, however census takers, court and church clerks seemed to most often spell the name Arent. Having said all that, there was a Peter ARRINGTON, as well as a Peter ARRANT on the 1830 Upson Co., GA census... and I have wondered if that Arrington was
valid, or if it could be Peter Arrant, Jr., father of James Peter Arrant. The ages listed for the Arrington family members closely match those of my Peter, Jr.
Then again, he may simply have not been recorded on a census.
My Arrant's first appear on the Russell Co., Ala census in 1840 (James Peter Arrant's father, Peter, Jr. appears as
Peter ARON, and his Uncle William is recorded as Wm. AARON), having come to Russell Co. from Upson Co., GA about 1835, according to some researchers. I have no verification of exactly when they did come.
Most of my own direct line remained there through the 1920's, however some moved on (to the west and south) within a few years of arriving.

James & Sarah Arrant first appear together on the 1850 Russell Co., Ala census as "James and Sarah ARENT". A child named John, age 1, was listed with them. Either this is an error, or the entire family forgot (for the rest of their lives!) that their first born was a daughter named Frances Theodocia, on 13 August 1849.

After seing my query, Walt Broughton was kind enough to send me his file, which indicates James Broughton's parents were John Broughton and Nancy UNKNOWN. I have copied some misc. mentions of the Broughton's over the years, as I ran across them in old books and newspapers,
but I am only now trying to develop this line.

Liz

Sorry about the mis info on Susan Broughton. daughter of James and Theodochia.

Just to clarify, Susan Frances Theodochia Edwards was bn 1873 daughter of Mary Ann Broughton bn 1837 and Eben Peyton Edwards bn 1835.
Susan Edwards and Walter Green Dudley are buried in McLennan Co, Axtell,TX both in 1921.

So your Sarah bn 1830 and Mary Ann Broughton bn 1837 were sisters.

Mary Ann married 1st James Ramsay and 2nd Eben Peyton Edwards. Mary Ann is buried Shiloh. I haven't been able to
get over there to find out how many family are buried there, I assume that James must be buried there as well. I need to see if i can get in touch with the church to check on that.

Betty

Betty,

Sarah was the daughter of James Broughton and Theodocia Stewart. She was born 10 July 1830, married James Peter Arrant on 13 July 1848 in Russell Co., Ala. Their marriage bond was assured by William Stewart. They raised twelve children to adulthood, eleven of which survived her at the time of her death in 1914, per her obit.

I have been through Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery (where Sarah & J.P. are buried, along with atleast five of their children) many times, but guess I missed any marked Broughton graves. I'll follow up with you regarding the Broughton's, on the Broughton message board.

Liz

Ingrid,
my name is SandraFerrara Gentry. Thank You for replying. Angus Arrant and Rosa Lee Benton were my great grandparents on my mother's side. Do you have any info on a Johann Hermann Ardnt/Arrant's parents? He was born in Nordhausen , Germany in 1683, came over here on the Ship Hope in 1733, with 3 sons, 1 daughter and one daughter in law, and his wife Anna Margaretha, to the Philadelphia ,PA port of entry. I cannot find anything connecting from this point.
Also, if you anything about some Indian heritage, I would love to know. I was told from when I was very young that this great grandmother was Cherokee Indian, I have not been able to prove threw any of the "rolls". Any info would be helpful!

Thanks again!
Sandra

You should find Peter Jr. in a Cemetery in Lee County, Opelike, Alabama. He died on 29 May 1876. More information on Peter Jr., and his wife Frances can be found in the book "GEORGIA PENSIONERS", page 188. Good luck, and let me hear if you are successful.
Looking For Family Members

I am the daughter of Jeff A. and Frances Welch Arrant. Adopted in 1956 by Mr. And Mrs. A. R. Broz. I have 1 natural sister Beulah M. Broz, and 2 brothers, Kenneth W. and Clyde Allen (deceased). My sister and myself were adopted a year apart by the same family. Our brothers went to other homes. But we all met up later. I think our dad may have passed in and our mom Frances remarried and moved to Galveston, Texas. We once met an Aunt getting on a bus outside the Northline mall about 45 years ago. She would not give us any info. We had I was told an older half sis & bro. We do not remember them or their names. We had the courts open our records and guess what, after all these years they could not be found. We mainly wanted it for medical records. Are parents were drinkers and lived in Spring, Texas around the FM 1960 area on a sawmill. Our mother asked Mrs. Ollie Francis Broz to take us. So if any of this was ever told in your family, then it's US! Please let of us at the email address stated. Oh yeah, I was born 4-1-53 and my sister 8-16-52.

Thank you,
Dorothy J Arrant Broz
