Annette,

I happen to see your post and I was married to your father, Herbert James
Arter II in 1980. We separated in 1982 but were still legally married when he passed away in 1991. I had lost contact with him in 1989 when I last saw him but I didn't find out that he passed away until a couple of years ago. I don't know what he died of. You can reach me at email: Margieleo@aol.com

I'm seeking any information on the origins of James Arter, married Mary Woods 14 Dec 1815 at Botetourt, Virginia. Possible children include Charlotte, John, Rebecca, Joseph.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/9S5Y-DHL/p4

There was also a Mary Arter, aged forty who appeared on the 1850 federal census record of Botetourt County living in the household of Sarah Shirkey, born 1760, widow of Nicholas Shirkey; also in household is William and Georgiana Backus Anderson, relatives of Mrs. Shirkey.
This is a late reply to your message concerning the origin of the Arter name, but Ancestry.com has a huge database to view.
I was told that our family name's origin was probably Swiss, and the spelling was Oerther. I have no other info. My paternal grandmother came from PA and my paternal grandfather was a resident of IL. Good luck in your search.
F. John Arter, Wheatland, Wyoming.

Hello Shawn,

So sorry I have taken so long to reply. I had almost given up on learning anything new about my biological father. I was wondering if you could tell me what he passed away from and any other info you knew about him in general. I never knew I had any siblings out there. Are you the only one? Or are there any others? Here's a little info about myself: I had a happy childhood as an Army dependent, I have been happily married for 14 years and have 4 children (2 girls and 2 boys). We are currently located in Portsmouth, Ohio. I would like to learn some more about you, if it's all right with you. Thank you so much for your response. I look forward to your reply.

God bless you always,
Annette Daughtry

Since my original posting, I have learned that Dr. Arter had no third wife. His second wife, Millie, outlived him and is buried at his side in Cairo City Cemetery, Villa Ridge, Pulaski County,Illinois. In June 2006, my husband and I visited their gravesites there.

I'm not related, but in reference to the Elizabeth Cook you mentioned, I accidentally ran across her 1952 obituary today. According to it, Mary Elizabeth Cook was survived by her mother, Mrs. Janie Cook, two brothers [obviously should be half-brothers], Johnny & James Arter, as well as a [half] sister, Mrs. Della May Mullins. Johnny was listed as resident of Newport, Ark. and James as resident of Little Rock, Ark. in 1952. Burial was in Lamkins Cemetery, Jackson Co. Arkansas.

I am assisitng my second cousin Irene Oliver Flowers in researching the surname Oliver. We we both born Olivers. She is a serious researcher and her investigation has been extremely professional. She works on this nearly fulltime with her husbands help. She can tell you quickly if our Olivers are connected. She has gone back to the late 1700's to the birth of our common g-father named Charles A. L. B. Oliver. He had 4 wives and many children and mainly lived in Florida and Georgia. It is worth a shot. Her E-mail is, hmf@svic.net. Good luck. Please let me know if you contact her, and the outcome. Hope I helped.
Claudia Newell
Shari, I shall send you an email tonight--if you don't receive it, will you please contact me at Susiesearcher@worldnet.att.net? I do have a transcription of the ARTER Bible (it was printed in a 1989 edition of the GSSI quarterly journal, SAGA), and I can send you another copy, one which I have annotated with some notes.

Yes, I had learned that Charles Arter was shot in the back by Hogan; and I, too, am terribly curious to learn what caused Hogan's hatred toward Charlie. Charles had been police chief of Cairo a couple of years earlier, and I read a short newspaper article printed during his term that he was cracking down on horse thieves. This act of violence sounded like something personal, however.

Peter SAUP, Charlie's good friend who witnessed the murder, was the older brother of my great-grandfather, Phillip SAUP, who married Charles and Eliza Arter's older daughter, Emma ARTER. (Eliza died in Los Angeles at the age of 90, where she had moved to live with her younger daughter, Grace Magee and Grace's daughter, Grace, five years earlier.) In the future, we plan to go to Cairo to research our ARTER, HARRELL, and SAUP families at the library and courthouse.

I have a copy of Daniel and Mary JARRETT's divorce papers and will write you what I know in my email!

Thanks for your response. I'm not sure if I got your message. I am still trying to assimilate what I have and get it into the computer. I did find obits for Dr. Daniel and Charles D. Did you know that Charles was murdered in a saloon? That was quite a surprise. The paper wouldn't comment on the motive. I'd like to go back to Cairo and see if I can find some info on the trial and outcome. Do you know anything about what motivated John Hogan to shoot him? Also, can you shed some light on whether or not Daniel's first wife did return to PA? Another mystery is exactly when he divorced and remarried. There are conflicting dates between what is in the Arter Bible and the court documents. This is certainly a very interesting family to research. If you want to send your snail mail address, I'll send you copies of the obits and a transcription of the Bible info. The Bible is in such bad shape that no one is allowed to handle it now. I'd certainly be interested in what you have on the Harrell family. I haven't even begun that yet!

Shari, I sent an earlier email reply to your posting; but, perhaps, it did not reach you. I am very much interested in exchanging information and research with you about the branch of the ARTER family from which your client and I descend. I have already shared research with a 3rd cousin, who is a grandson of Charles F. ARTER, and have provided information on our ARTER family branch to the author of "The ARTERS/OETHERS of Fountain Valley" for the recent update to his CD book. Also, anyone who is descended from Chas. D. ARTER, of course, is descended from his wife, Eliza M. HARRELL, and her parents, Bailey S. and Abigail WOOD HARRELL. I now have Bailey's family Bible and provided input and photos for the article about the Bailey Bible, written my the editor, Darrell Dexter, printed in the Spring 2004 issue of SAGA (GSSI's journal). I would be more than happy to share research on the HARRELL family, too.

I have recently been research the family of Dr. Daniel Arter and saw your posting. If you go to the family trees and search on his name, you will find an fairly exensive charting of his ancestry. I am planning a trip to Cairo next month to search records and see the Arter Bible. I am doing this research for a client who descends from Daniel and his first wife, Mary Jarrett through his son, Charles D., grandson Charles F. and gr-granddaughter Abbie Arter Dean.
