The family of Arterburn (variously Atterborn, Otterburn, Arterborn, etc.) is from the Berwick coast of Scotland, having originated somewhere in the northlands of England, possibly Northumberland. There are lots of Scottish records of Arterburns. In October 1635 one James Atterborn sailed from London to Virginia on board the ship Constance. Peter and William appear in the records of Prince William County, VA by the 1750's. Many overlook an entry in the Shenandoah County, VA court minutes which says: "28 November 1782: Upon the motion of Ann Cunningham, who made oath according to Law...Certificate is hereby granted her for obtaining letters of administration of the estate of John Cunningham, Dec'd. in due form...William, THOMAS and Peter Arterburn, her securities." So who was Thomas? I descend from James Arterburn, Sr., James Arterburn, Jr., Isaac Arterburn, Rebecca Arterburn, who married David Ivy Roberts and resided in Upper East Tennessee, where many Arterburns still live. If we join forces we may dig up more on what happened in the 100 years between the arrival of James in 1635 and Peter, William and Thomas in the 1750's. Thanks!!
