It is believed that the Afro-American Artis family originated
in Southampton County, Virginia. They were found there about the
time of Nat Turner's Slave Revolt. Members of the Artis family group were
enumerated there in the 1870 Census. "Family Tree Maker's Family Archives", CD
program "African Americans in the 1870 Census" lists several in Southampton County,
Va. with the surname Artis.
