My mother is an Artis from Wayne County, NC and my grandfather swore that the Artis' were never slaves, but were Indians but were considered to be "free slaves". I was always told that the tribe was the Lumbee Tribe however my Grandfather passed before I was able to get more information. I've found a little connection so far and I'm more than happy to share more information as I discover it.
