Im so sorry. Of course I meant NC. I'd spent hours this morning on Ancestry working on my mother's side of the family, which was based, on my grandmother's side, in Columbia, SC.

Again, sorry for the confusion. After hours of looking at page after page of names, dates, and places, I shorted out!

William Hagans

Is the info you have for NC or SC? I know Wayne Co. and Nahunta are in NC, but you mentioned SC. I would love to see if any docs you have pertain to my family-I'm at a brick wall.

Thank you

From William Hagans:

A cousin in Philadelphia recently sent me a number of deeds from Wayne County, SC, that date from 1846. My great-grandfather was Napoleon Hagans (spelled in different ways), my grandfather was William Scarlet Hagans, and my father, born in Goldsboro, SC, was William Napoleon Hagans. His family moved to Phila. when he was three, after the death of his mother Lizzie Burnett Hagans. I would be glad to exchange information. The Hagans, Barnes, Artis family were around Nahunta, SC, near Fremont, and my have made-up a "family," of sorts, going back to slavery. Some of the Deeds include the Artis family

Benjamin or Asa & Pherebe Wayne/Wilson NC

I am STUCK on Benjamin, whom I believe was called Asa on the 1860 census, and his wife Pherebe, spelled all kinds of ways. They were in Nahunta, Wayne, NC in 1860. I believe Pherebe was a Barnes. Both are mulatto. I cannot find any evidence of either one before 1850, but they were married in 1843. Does anyone have them in their family line? They had 15 kids (I think) from abt 1840-1888--seems like she would be to old as she was born abt 1825, but the death cert for one of her children (Louvenia b:1888) states her parents as Benjamin and Pherebe Artis, so...
My family line is through their son Lewis (Louis) Artis, who married Mattie Evans (called Patsy in early census')--& their son Leland (Lelon) who later moved to Asbury Park/Neptune, NJ.

Any info please email me gaaira@aol.com or send me a message here. Thanks!!

I suspect that ALL the Wayne County Artis lines (in fact, all the eastern NC Artis lines) originate in 18th century Virginia. Will we ever find proof? I doubt it. I think the missing links are permanently lost to history.

I am almost certain that the Absalom in the 1840 census is
part of my family tree. I have visited the courthouses in both Wayne and Duplin counties and reviewed birth, death and marriage information. Not sure is this line is from eastern Va.

Yes, most of us tend to fizzle out there. And I can't even find my Artises in 1840. :-( I've often speculated about a relationship between Wayne County Absalom Artis and the Absalom Artis who's found in earlier VA censuses, but have never been able to bridge the gap. I can't even connect the various Artises who appear in the 1840 census with one another with any certainty.

John & Isaac Artis from Fayette Co, PA (Parentage of Henry Artis/t)

I'm trying to trace the lineage of my ancestor, Henry Artist (b. 27 Dec 1825 in School Till, PA; d.16 Sep 1911 in Rush, Carter, KY). His death certificate lists a "John Artist, b. Fayette PA" as his father. In researching John Artist, I found two primary historical volumes at the DAR Library in Washington, DC. The pertinent passages read as follows:

1. About 1790, John Artis and his brother Isaac came from Delaware to Fayette County. John located at Mount Braddock, and Isaac on the place now the farm of John Hanen. John Artis was killed in 1811 while wood-chopping on Isaac Meason's lands. He left nine children, of whom none are now living. At the time of his death his home was where Stoneroad Bodkin now lives, back of Dunbar village. Isaac Artis, his brother, died in Connellsville. History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men, Volume 2, p. 506, by Franklin Ellis, published by LH Everts & Co, Philadelphia, 1822.

2. Artis. This name dates in Pennsylvania to pre-revolutionary times. A William Artis served in the war for independence from Chester county, but the Connellsville family descends from John Artis, who came to Fayette county from Virginia at an early date. He met his death from a falling tree near the town of Dunbar. He married and left issue. (The article goes on to list only one progeny by name, Elijah, and gives an abbreviated summary of Elijah's descendants. Isaac Artis is mentioned later (on p. 600) but is not directly associated with John in this version.) Fayette and Greene Counties, Pennsylvania, Volume 2, p.394, by John W Jordan, LLD, and James Hadden, published by Lewis Hisorical Publishing Company, New York, 1912.

If John Artis' date of death in the first article is right, he can't be Henry's father as he would have died 14 years prior to Henry's birth. However, my speculation is that one of the nine children left behind by John Artis was also named "John" (which would have be common for early Scotch settlers) and was Henry's father.

OR

Isaac Artis (b. abt 1757) had a son and named him "John" after his brother (which also would have been common for Scotch settlers) and he is Henry's father. By the way, I also found a court record for this Isaac swearing under oath that he served in the Revolutionary War, joining in Berkeley Co, VA (now WV) so I think the brother are from Virginia, not Delaware.

Does anyone have info on John or Isaac and their progeny? Many thanks!

The Artis family that I know was from SouthHampton, VA and we came from the Blackfoot tribe. My grandfather's name was George Garland Artis and my father's name is Kelwin "Dwayne" Artis. I believe the Artis family moved to Hampton, VA. Our family's cemetary is located in Courtland, VA (SouthHampton County). My grandfather was in the Air Force.
