John & Isaac Artis from Fayette Co, PA (Parentage of Henry Artis/t)

I'm trying to trace the lineage of my ancestor, Henry Artist (b. 27 Dec 1825 in School Till, PA; d.16 Sep 1911 in Rush, Carter, KY). His death certificate lists a "John Artist, b. Fayette PA" as his father. In researching John Artist, I found two primary historical volumes at the DAR Library in Washington, DC. The pertinent passages read as follows:

1. About 1790, John Artis and his brother Isaac came from Delaware to Fayette County. John located at Mount Braddock, and Isaac on the place now the farm of John Hanen. John Artis was killed in 1811 while wood-chopping on Isaac Meason's lands. He left nine children, of whom none are now living. At the time of his death his home was where Stoneroad Bodkin now lives, back of Dunbar village. Isaac Artis, his brother, died in Connellsville. History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men, Volume 2, p. 506, by Franklin Ellis, published by LH Everts & Co, Philadelphia, 1822.

2. Artis. This name dates in Pennsylvania to pre-revolutionary times. A William Artis served in the war for independence from Chester county, but the Connellsville family descends from John Artis, who came to Fayette county from Virginia at an early date. He met his death from a falling tree near the town of Dunbar. He married and left issue. (The article goes on to list only one progeny by name, Elijah, and gives an abbreviated summary of Elijah's descendants. Isaac Artis is mentioned later (on p. 600) but is not directly associated with John in this version.) Fayette and Greene Counties, Pennsylvania, Volume 2, p.394, by John W Jordan, LLD, and James Hadden, published by Lewis Hisorical Publishing Company, New York, 1912.

If John Artis' date of death in the first article is right, he can't be Henry's father as he would have died 14 years prior to Henry's birth. However, my speculation is that one of the nine children left behind by John Artis was also named "John" (which would have be common for early Scotch settlers) and was Henry's father.

OR

Isaac Artis (b. abt 1757) had a son and named him "John" after his brother (which also would have been common for Scotch settlers) and he is Henry's father. By the way, I also found a court record for this Isaac swearing under oath that he served in the Revolutionary War, joining in Berkeley Co, VA (now WV) so I think the brother are from Virginia, not Delaware.

Does anyone have info on John or Isaac and their progeny? Many thanks!

It's been mentioned already that there's variations on the Artis spelling... well my surname is Artiss. Related ? I don't know. But some of the UK place names mentioned in previous threads are also bases for Artiss' as well.

I'm asking for an Artiss surname board to be set up but if anybody finds evidence that Artiss is related to Artis in any way please let me know.

I am doing research for my son on the Artis/Cockrell line. I know that John Thomas & Sarah Jane had at least 3 children.
1. Annie ; 2. Mayme; 3. Leona. My son descends from Annie Artis that married George W. "Bill" Cockrell in Scioto Co., OH.

John Thomas Artis' second wife was Elizabeth Bentley Clemmons. I have 6 children listed for them.1. Gordon W.; 2. Clyde; 3. Katie; 4. Dorothy; 6. Ruth; 7. John.

I would like to hear from anyone working on this line or on the Artis line. I believe that David Artis & Elizabeth Bush were the parents of John Thomas. Any and all help is appreciated.
Connie - balihi@adelphia.net

Artis/Artist

The father of Sam Artist left either West Virginia or Fayette Co., PA in early 1850's via the rivers (Ohio & Mississippi) and died on arrival, or soon after, at Galena, IL on their way to Allamakee County, Iowa. He is buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery just South of Waterville, Iowa. They arrived (Sam Artist family) at the Sencebaugh home in Iowa, in April 1852 in a blinding snow storm. The father of Sam died at McGregor,
iowa and he was brought from McGregor and was buried there on the Sencebaugh farm. The 1st to be buried there. Sam's wife's mother was the 2nd buried and it became a family cemetery known by Maple Hill or Bigfoot Cemetery. It is fairly well kept even today. Many of the landowners today and descendants of the group of families who came at that time from the PA, WV, area near Morgantown.
hi
My grandfather was from the JOHNSTON COUNTY Area! Isn't it interesting that with such a unusual last name like ARTIS, no one can discover a connection, although you live in the same area!
I met a Nadine Artis in Philly (tall over 6ft!)in PA her father Charles(living in New Jersey) was the Johnston area too but no one had ever made a connection! There has to be one! My Gr'father's name is Edgar Artis
his father name was Archibald Artis! My gr'father also mention Warsaw to me as his place of origin! Does anyone have any knowledge of any Artis(s) in Warsaw connected to Archibald Artis!
Edgar, Mark, Wade, and Milton were the 4 sons! And interestingly enough Edgar Artis also married a Powell. Ora Mae Powell Artis(she was from Apex)
By the way, any descendants, close play cousins (almost brothers or sisters of the
of Archibald artis..or for that matter any Artis who wants to strenghten his family ties is invited to Detroit Labor Day weekend!
call Paul D Williams Trucking,in Dunn, North Carolina or William Perry Artis (father)or (daughter)Cynthia Artis in Detroit, Mich for more information all right!Chck the listings for the numbers please!
A lot or people in the Johnston County Area knew Edgar Artis because of he worked in there for a loooooooong time!
let me hear from any of my newly discovered family
Is Technology Great!

French Irish Artis settlers

There is an Artis enclave in Artois near Paris, France. Belfast and Liverpool are cities in Ireland where you can find them. Liverpool is a port ciy, that may explain some things. Especially during the Catholic exodis due to Cromwell. During the potato famine of course it was survival. I was told by an Irish scholar friend (math professor) from Ireland who returned there to die the name came from the ancient Irish leader, Art. It can also be Norse (French) or Latin for Art.

b/w Artis - Ole' family tyrant slave owner

Charley Artis lived and died near Ashland, Kentucky. The Greenup County census shows names and ages of slaves. Our family fought on both sides during the Civil War. Many want to believe the Civil War was fought solely because of "secessionism". I don't. Uncle Charley has a reputation that lives on for being a tyranical master. While visit-ing a distant cousin about fifteen years ago who "introduced" me to Uncle Charley, I was kindly offered a portrait of the man. It as well as the frame had been damaged during the '37 flood. My daughter, Sissy was terrified by his likeness. She was a teenager at the time and still doen't like to see it. He "lives" temporarily in our basement until I get up to Maysvill to donate it to The Underground Railroad Museum.
Anyone wanting more information, I live only 30 minutes from the Kentucky state archives. I would be happy do do a little digging, photocopying and scanning.

RJ, I have lots of photos of the old man, but my scanner was on the skids so I bought a new one, got it home and realized I need an adapter to fit my hard drive.

Regards, jeaniea@infi.net

Hi. Any information on my Aunt Sarah Frances Artis would be greatly appreciated. I do know that her parents were Isaac and Lizzie Artis and she is from the Suffolk County, VA area. She had 2 sisters and 2 brothers, Willie Artis, Buddy Artis, Alice Artis Walton and Louise Bessie Artis Jones. Willie Artis and Louise "Bessie" Artis Jones moved to Philadelphia, PA and remained there until their deaths in the 1960s and 1980's respectively.
