my great great grandparents are isaac and elizabeth (vanlieu) artist of fayette co. pa. the only info have is that they were maried on march 13, 1835 he died oct 21,1887 age 72 yrs.,2 mos.,15 days in dewitt, neb.elizabeth born 1818, died sept. 17,1897, at 79 yrs.,also in dewitt. my paperwork also states that she said she was german.in an artist record it says she was born in pa or louisiana, but all census say pa.,at that time that area was ref. to as louisiana. i'm just copying what my paperwork says, it was given to my parents in the 1950's. it states that nothing was known about their families or isaac's nationality. i do have the names and birth and death dates of their 11 children, who they married, their childrens names and birth dates who some of them married and their childrens names and where they lived and/or died. if any of this will help let me know.

Henry Artist 1825-1911, son of John Artist of Fayette PA

I'm trying to trace the lineage of my ancestor, Henry Artist (b. 27 Dec 1825 in School Till, PA; d.16 Sep 1911 in Rush, Carter, KY). His death certificate lists a "John Artist, b. Fayette PA" as his father. In researching John Artist, I found two primary historical volumes at the DAR Library in Washington, DC. The pertinent passages read as follows:

1. About 1790, John Artis and his brother Isaac came from Delaware to Fayette County. John located at Mount Braddock, and Isaac on the place now the farm of John Hanen. John Artis was killed in 1811 while wood-chopping on Isaac Meason's lands. He left nine children, of whom none are now living. At the time of his death his home was where Stoneroad Bodkin now lives, back of Dunbar village. Isaac Artis, his brother, died in Connellsville. History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men, Volume 2, p. 506, by Franklin Ellis, published by LH Everts & Co, Philadelphia, 1822.

2. Artis. This name dates in Pennsylvania to pre-revolutionary times. A William Artis served in the war for independence from Chester county, but the Connellsville family descends from John Artis, who came to Fayette County from Virginia at an early date. He met his death from a falling tree near the town of Dunbar. He married and left issue. (The article goes on to list only one progeny by name, Elijah, and gives an abbreviated summary of Elijah's descendants. Isaac Artis is mentioned later (on p. 600) but is not directly associated with John in this version.) Fayette and Greene Counties, Pennsylvania, Volume 2, p.394, by John W Jordan, LLD, and James Hadden, published by Lewis Hisorical Publishing Company, New York, 1912.

If John Artis' date of death in the first article is right, he can't be Henry's father as he would have died 14 years prior to Henry's birth. However, my speculation is that one of the nine children left behind by John Artis was also named "John" (which would have be common for early Scotch settlers) and was Henry's father.

OR

Isaac Artis (b. abt 1757) had a son and named him "John" after his brother (which also would have been common for Scotch settlers) and he is Henry's father. By the way, I also found a court record for this Isaac swearing under oath that he served in the Revolutionary War, joining in Berkeley Co, VA (now WV) so I think the brother are from Virginia, not Delaware.

Does anyone have info on John or Isaac and their progeny? Many thanks!
Eliza Wheeler Artist and William Artist

OK this is what I have to work with. Eliza Wheeler was born in Ohio in 1823 or 1824 and Married William Artist ...Eliza's mother was Elizabeth Wheeler ...that is her married name not maiden. It is possible that Eliza's full name is Elizabeth, but I do not find her listed as anything except Eliza. William and Eliza had Harvey, Elizabeth, Benjamin, and Mariah Jane.

Benjamin later married Electa Burroughs, daughter of William Jones Burroughs and Rachel Ann Shull. I am also looking for information on these people.

Elizabeth Wheeler mentioned above was born in South Calolina. I have not found her hussbands name, but he either died fairly young, or they were divorced, because Elizabeth was living with Eliza.

William is said to have been born in PA.

I think Eliza and William may have married in Kentucky....somewhere, I know for sure that they lived there from 1844 to 1851. In 1851 they moved to Jefferson Township of Pulaski County, Indiana, where William was the first white man to die in March of 1854...just a couple months before their youngest child was born.

I have sometimes seen the last name spelled Artis ...losing the T. But that has only been on census records, I have official Papers from Pulaski County that read ARTIST.

I am trying to climb all branches of this tree and can use whatever help you have to offer. I am willing to offer decendant information to and relatives and I also have copies of several documents and photos of headstones I am willing to share. Please see my message about the Burroughs (Malia) Cemetery that I plan to post as soon as I get done with this message. Thank you all.

Ginger - At this point in my research, I doubt we are connected. My latest information indicates my g-g-grandfather, Samuel Boyles married an Olive Doyle in Mo.- rather than Mary Artist. The only possibility would be if he was married to both in his lifetime --- However, I have nothing to indicate that to be true. Sorry for the dead-end.

Unfortunately, the submitters e-mail address did not work for me.

I'm looking for any information on Isaac ARTIST of Pennsylvania.

Isaac was born in or around 1790, probably in Pennsylvania. His
wife was Mary Smitzen Artist. Isaac and Mary are said to have
lived in or near Connellsville, PA at the time of the births of
their children. The children are Chloe Ann, James,Mary, William,
Nancy, and Daniel. Chloe Ann married John May in 1845. The 1850
census for Derry Township, Westmoreland County, PA shows Isaac
living with Chloe Ann and John May, along with his two youngest
sons, William and Daniel.

Daniel Artist is my great-great-great grandfather. I would greatly
appreciate any information on his father, Isaac, or his mother, Mary Smitzen.

I found where a Mary Artist married Samuel S. Boyles on Jan 31, 1878 in Greenup, Ky. I am seeking info on the Boyles lineage in Ky & Il. I came across this marriage in the Kentucky marriages, 1851-1900 on the Ancestry.com web page. I know this is not what you were asking about - but I was wondering if you already
had that info & perhaps you have a list of the children of Mary Artist and Samuel S. Boyles. I am trying to identify Samuel's children (which would be your Isaac & Mary's grandchildren.) I am hoping one of their sons is my Great Grandfather. Please e-mail me.
