Thank you for your response re "my" W Artley. Your family story explains why William Artley was in Roswell! Co-incidentially, my g-g-father, James Monroe Nelson, was an architect in Roswell up to 1913 and he too moved westward from Texas to find a drier climate to suit his lung condition. Could you FWD scans of the photographs you have of the houses built by W Artley in Roswell?

David Nelson
cdnelson01@optusnet.com.au

I have no direct relationship to Will Artley, but my great grandfather, James Screven Cooper, apparently had some dealings with him you might be interested in. This was all passed down thru family lore, so there might be some errors.

James Screven Cooper was born in Savannah, Georgia on August 15, 1858. He worked for the Georgia Pacific Railroad and National Steamboat Co as a bookkeeper/accountant, figuring cash finances of both and several other businesses.

Suffering from tuberculosis. The doctors in Savannah, GA recommended he move to a dryer climate, so the family moved to New Mexico. They had wanted to move to Carlsbad, but there wasn't a First Christian Church there, so they moved to Roswell. They rented a house while building a house on 414 North Lee St. We have several pictures of the rent house. The house at 414 N. Lea was builti in 1908 by Mr. Will Artley of Savannah, Georgia. It cost about $10,000 (not quite), the upstairs was not finished. The house at 412 N. Lea was built by Will Artley about 1912. The houses at 410 and 412 W. 3rd was built by Will Artley about 1910. James Screven went into the construction business with a friend from Savannah, one Mr. Will Artley. Mr. Artley took care of the construction end of the business, and Mr. Cooper took care of the financial and management concerns. Mr. Cooper eventually ended up owning a number of houses/properties in Roswell and also a farm near Lake Arthur.

James Screven Cooper died on May 16, 1914. He is buried in Southpark Cemetary, Roswell NM

Thank you Judy for your rapid response to my Artley inquiry.
William H Artley b1883 married my great aunt Eva Nelson b1887. The 1900 US Census lists William H Artley living with in Savannah, Georgia with his father, Abram A Artley b1852 Pennsylvania, and mother Albaretta R Artley b1854 Pennsylvania and siblings John B b1881, Mary Kaye b1885, Lois b1887, Alla(e?)n T b1890 and Ruth M b1895.This family was living at Duffy Street West at the time of the census.

Abraham A Artley died 12 June, 1922 in Chatham Georgia.

I found an Abraham Artley listed in the 1860 US Census with siblings May M, Melisse and George C living in Pennsylvania, Columbia, Fishing Creek. No parents were listed.

Do you know how this Abraham Artley is connected to "your" Artley Family members?

David Nelson

Hi David, it appears that there are two "strains" of Artleys; German and English. We (both of our family lines) are the German "strain" for lack of a better word.

Our common ancestor was John Heinrich Erdle, b. abt. 1737 and d=1795, PA. Erdle was the family name that was Americanized to Artley in later generations. This branch came from Germany, settled in Pennsylvania and then slowly spread throughout the U.S.

The English Artleys originated in England and seemed to mainly have settled in Michigan. I've heard a theory that if someone was to do the research in England, they'd probably find they were originally Erdles from Germany but I don't know. I've got too many holes in the lineage in America to start searching in Europe at this time.

My father W. Russell Artley who was born in Ohio, lived there and Indiana and moved to Washington state during the 30's, only knew that his family was Pennsylvania Dutch. After he died in 1992 I did the research.

I've compiled quite the database so if you have any other Artley questions, I'd be glad to answer them. Send me an email.

Hello Warren,
I think the name Beifferin was really an error of my not reading the handwriting of the fractur (sp?) correctly. The B was really a W and it probably is Weisse. The writing is messy.
Anyway, I have Daniel Weise Artleys grandfather as John Heinrich Erdle ll, who died in 1795 in Windor Township, Pa.
I will send you my Artley PAF file seperatley.
I would love any info you have re: Germany. This is actually my husbands family and I'm not well versed in it.
Thank You
Linda Stevens

My great grandmothers name is Alice Artley and my grandfather's name is Charles Artley. I do believe that my great grandmother was a twin, but not completely sure. She passed away a few years before I was born. I am not sure when/where she was born, but I do know that my dad was born in Scranton, PA.. My dad passed away earlier this year, but I think my mom might have a few pictures of her still. I live in Phoenix, AZ now and my family all lives in Mt. Vernon, KY. My grandfather, Charles 'Dick' Artley is still alive and well back in KY and Alice was his mother.

Their daughter Anna Mary Artley was my Great Great Grandmother who married James Ginter. I have been trying to find Benjamin's father and suspected it was Abraham.
Thank you Warren very much. No, I do not go as far back as the 1600's. When I find some info on an 81st man, I try to get his wive's name, and if possible maiden name & birth date, and marriage date. I list his children and at least their birth dates. If you have all his children's names, that would be great. If you happen to know his wive's birth dates, again, it will add to his file. Also, do you know the number of the other regiment he served in? I believe I saw something somewhere that he was also in a two hundred something unit. I will have to check.
Thank you again so much for your help.
One more thing. Would you happen to have any type of photo of him? Even in later life? Anytime we can put a face on a name, it is special.
Yours,
Ted
Co. K, 81st PVI

Thank you again, Warren. Yes, I have researched the 81st. This is the object about trying to get information on him. I belong to a re-enacting unit, Co. K, 81st Pa. The company was recruited near where I live. I got interested in the men who made up then company, and eventually the men of the regiment. I have discovered some great and interesting stories about these men. Someday, I hope to put all this information together, and write a unit history, with help from other members who have better writing skills than I.
Thank you again for your help.
Ted
Co.
I have Daniel's mother's maiden name as Weise, hence his middle name. Where did the Beifferin name come from? I have a large file on the Artley family and this is first time I have ever heard the Beifferin name mentioned. I am looking for the father of Abraham. I have several Abrahams in my database, but have not located grandfather of Daniel.

I have 6 geneations of the Abraham Artley - Elizabeth Weise family including 38 descendants, but do not have your name in my list. My Artley family goes back to 1675 in Germany, but I have not been able to connect the above Abraham to my family file. Would appreciate any info you can furnish on Abraham's ancestry. Will be glad to share my records and receive any info you might have to add to my files.

Thank you.

Warren Artley warrenartley33@msn.com

Hi, Linda, I have Abraham, son of John Heinrich, II, now the III, as I have an earlier member of the family, married to an Elizabeth ? in 1793. Abraham was born in 1771 and died in 1824. They had 13 children. 1 Catherine 1794 died Jan 16,1866 married to George Shick; 2 Elizabeth 1796 married to a Burns; 3 Henry 1797; 4 Abraham, II, born 1800 married to Elizabeth Long; 5 Henry, (possibly the first Henry died) born 1804; 6 John born 1804 died Oct 9, 1854 (maybe twins?) (buried in Halls Cemetery Muncy Twp, Lycoming Co PA.); 7 Daniel born June 7, 1808 in Lycoming Co, died 1886 in Decatur, IL; 8 Eve born 1809 married a Chapman; 9 Franklin 1810; 10 Benjamin 1810 died Jan 26, 1875; (Possibly another set of twins?); 11 Margaret 1812 married to Earl Muser; 12 Esther 1812 died about 1830 (possibly anoter set of twins?); & 13 Isaac 1818 died 1892 married a Mary (both are buried in Edgemont Cemetery, Loyalsock Twp, Lycoming Co. PA.).

There appear to be 3 sets of children with the same birth year. They could be twins or separate births over 9 months apart in same calendar year.

This Daniel was born in 1808, Daniel Weise Artley was born in 1824. Two different Daniels and two different Abrahams.

I am sure Daniel Weise Artley is part of my Artley Family history, only thing is I keep hitting that Brick Wall that so many genealogists find in their search. There are several Abrahams and several Elizabeths in my database and it is possible there is a wrong 2 paired. One Abaraham born in 1800 and another in 1801. Biblical names were very popular in that time period.

I have Family Tree Maker, PAF and Legacy. Only thing is I like Legacy the best and have been updating my Legacy file. I will see about making a GEDCOM of my Legacy records and send you. A GEDCOM file should be able to be read by any genealogy program. In fact PAF designed the GEDCOM so as to be able to be read by other programs.

Thanks for your offer of the PAF records.

Warren

Re: Artley/Amour

I have been working on the Artley family history for over 30 years. Samuel H. Artley was my great grandfather. He was bon Dec 13, 1803 in Penn Township, Northumberland county, PA. and died May 12, 1866 in Muncy township, Lycoming county, PA. He is buried in same cemetery as are his parents, Immanuel Lutheran church Cemetery, between Hughesville and Muncy, PA. He was son of John Henry Artley, IV and Catherine Frey. All of the previous went by the middle name of Henry as was the custom of most German people. JH, I, was born in Germany about 1675 and in Germany went by the name of Erdle. When JH, II came to America with wife Regina ? and 4 children on the British ship Billander and docked on January 8, 1738 in Philadelphia he was listed as Henry Oertley. The name was changed to Artley before the end of the 1700's.

Please let me know if you need any additional information. I have a complete list from 1675, except for some surnames of the wives.

Thanks for the info on Hannah, I did not know her parent's names. I have always had the name spelled Armor from Samuel's handwritten note in his family Bible. Although one note from my files, reports that she was from the Chicago area and part of the Armour meat packing firm. I have never been able to confirm this. According to the archived copy of the Williamsport (PA) Gazette and Bulletin they were married by J. Graffius, Esq. in Lycoming Co. The brief article said they were both residents of Muncy Township All of my records show her as being born July 25, 1811 in Muncy Township, Lycoming Co and died August 23, 1870 in Muncy Township. She is buried along side of her husband, Samuel.

I lived in Lycoming County, PA. for 67 years prior to moving to Florida.

Warren Artley, Bradenton, FL.

Re: John Artley - 81st Pa.

I have the info you are looking for. John was born in 1847, died in Columbia Co., PA. According to my records, he was married two times. Marriage #1 Mary Weaver, #2 Katherine or Catherine Strauser, I have 2 spellings. Served as private in Co E 81st Inf Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers Aug 26. 1964 to June 1, 1865. Apparently the PA Vol had 9 month enlistments as my grandfather served for 9 months in another Reg. John was 6th generation in my Artley files. He was listed as a farmer in civilian life. Two children are listed, from union of John and Catherine, altough the first is William H. Artley, born May 23, 1859. Something does not make sense as he would only be 12 at the time, perhaps this is a step child. William was married to Annie Berger, they had 6 children, here my info stops. Seond child of John was Bertha who married a Kriger, nothing further on her.

He is listed as having died in Columbia Co. Pleasant Hill Cemetery is in Lycoming Co. These are adjoining Counties in central PA. I grew up and lived for 67 years in Lycoming Co, before moving to Florida in 1991. Since you are researching the 81st, I am not sure how much info you need. I have his lineage from 1675, if needed

Warren Artley

Actually, Ted, I gave you all the direct info I had on John. He is a descendant of my earliest ancestor from 1675, but he is not in my direct line. He was son of Henry Artley and Margaret Loreman. He is descended from a brother of my great, great, grandfather, so he would be my second cousin, twice removed, my genealogy program computes the relationship. I do not understand how it is done.

I have no photos of him or any other info on his wife or wives.

I went on-line to Civil War info and downloaded the facts about my grandfather's regiment. Have you researched the 81st?

Sorry, I have no further help.

Warren

John,

I have received E-mail from Francis and Roy, but do not know Miles. I believe you have a brother Dike and I have heard from him although not recently.

On FamilySearch.com I found the father of John Heinrich Erdle who died in 1754. He is Johann Heinrich Erdle born about 1675 which predates Carolyn's infp.

Warren
