Hi Susan, My name is Terry Poston but was born Terry Lee Arney. I was born in Clintwood in 1958. My mother was (is) Mary Ann Artrip ( Elizabethton Tenn ). Her father was Kid Artrip ( Brother to Bob Artrip ) of Clintwood. Kid married Dessie Turner of Clintwood. I have some pics of Uncle Bob if you might be interested. There isn't many pics of Kid but I do have one. The pics I have of Uncle Bob is with his old Banjo. The Bob Artrip that I'm refering to had a real large nose. Guess this is the same guy. If you have any Artrip info that you wouldn't mind shareing, I sure would appreciate it as I guess we're cut from the same tree.

Artrip/Hill legend

In the Hill family, the legend goes there was an Indian chief named Artrip who was wounded and nursed back to health by a white woman named Hill. They had a child & it was named Wesley Hill. The Indian chief Artrip is supposedly buried on Paint Creek in Kentucky.

Now we all know that there is sometimes a little bit of truth hidden in myths and legends.

Has anyone in the Artrip family heard this legend?

I am researching the Hill family from Morgan County Kentucky.

Thank you.

I posted my research project of the Artrip / Artrup surname from census indices from 1783 to 1910. Each name has a calculated birth year to help you with cross referencing and identification. It has hundreds of Artrips all across the country and is referenced. The entire project can be found on the Wayne County, WV GenWeb Archives free of charge. Happy hunting.

Donna, I received an email notice that you had responded to my board message. I was surprised to see that others had also responded, especially since I didn't receive any notices for them. Anyway, I met Lindsey & Olive at the Webb reunion in 1986 and I fell in love with them ! Lindsey's sister, Rhoda, was my grandmother. You can email me at williamr@zoomnet.net

Jean

Hello Teresa, It has been a long time since I have had a chance to check into family history. I believe I had told you my Mother was ill, she passed away on the 21st of Nov. My husband and I had been with her at my brothers' home. We went to Ohio for the services. I had told her that there were still 2 sisters alive. She remembered some about them. The information you have sent is wonderful. It means even more to me now than before. It makes a difference to know where you came from as well as who your family is. Do you live in the Virginia area, still? Please keep in touch. Your cousin
Barby

Cindy,
Artrip was my Grandmother's maiden name. I had spoke to Judy, but she didn't have the paperwork to connect her with the ones I knew to be brothers and sisters. Some of the names were: Rufas, Sim, Dow,Martha, Nancy,Maybelle. I believe my Granny was born somewhere between Nancy and Martha. We called Martha, Aunt Matt, she was married to John Ballard. They had an adopted son they called Harless. He had been in the Air Force, was married to Kittyl They had 2 daughters, Candy and Shelly. I will look into the Russell County pages again. I have talked to Teresa a number of times also. We to are cousins. Thanks again.

It is sort of funny, Cindy. All the years I can remember, I thought that my Grandfather was named WALTER COMBS. I spoke to my cousin,Sandra, and she said his name was GEORGE WALKER COMBS.It was the same person, I just had the name incorrect. Sandra is my Dad's sisters daughter. Her name was LOVE MARIE ARTRIP. She was born around 1908. We just called him Grandpa Combs, so the first name never was really memtioned.
My Dad, PAUL ARTRIP, carried Granny's last name. He was born, Sept.15,1905 in Russell County.
You can e-mail me at missionhillsgranny@yahoo.com
