I made a trip to the Lancaster County Historical Society on Friday, since we knew from Peter S. Artz letters, that his father was born there. Here is what I found.

Emigration from the city of Freudenstadt, Wurttemberg, Germany
Johann Philipp Artzt. aged 29, nailsmith by trade, with wife Maria Barbara, aged 26, and children: Sophia Dorothea and Catharina Christina (4 weeks old)
on page 44
The nailsmith Johann Philipp Artzt gave as his reason that it was impossible to support oneself in Freddenstadt, since iron and coal were getting more expensive every year, and he could not compete with the foreign artisans of his trade, who as a conquence of cheaper raw materials (iron and coal) could produce more cheaply and underbid the native nailsmiths out in the country and in the market towns.
All the sons came to Washington County MD after the death of Philipp & I believe the Henry Artz that died in Washington County, in 1808, who had Christian as the adm. of his estate are sons of this Philipp. Also, My Peter who was married to Anna Maria Schaeffer. There was also a Cornelious in Washington Co. MD.
Hope this will help some of you.
