John A. Asay and Elsie (Longacre)

I am working primarily on the Kreer line. I have found the following Asay relations I would like help with:

Edna Bertha Asay, daughter John A. and Elsie N., b. 1881, marries Horace Kreer. They are burried in Gracelawn Cemetery in New Castle, Delaware. Siblings of Edna (my grandmother) include Earl, Elva, and John.(Edna has a daughter before this marriage named Grace Asay-my aunt).

I am also interested in a John S. Asay who marries a Anna Cale. I believe she may have a relative Margaret (Maggie)Cale who marries a James Boone and has a daughter LuLu. LuLu Boone(b. 1899) marries Ernest Kreer in Wilmington in 1911.

Any and all help on on these lines would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Asay poem

Here's the Asay poem that was posted by Nancy.

"Family Trails"

- by John C. Houston, Lovell, Wyoming

Living in the Fatherland long, long ago,
The Assayes joined with the French Huguenot.
The very earliest knowledge, history tells,
Their homes were in the city of Aux-La-Chappells.

If all we've been told is really true,
The Asay name goes back to the year 1422.
Research thru history the fact one gleans,
That our kinship is traced to the Maid of Orleans.

A famous deliverer "Heaven" did send,
The Hundred Years War she brot to an end.
Joan of Arc led the disheartened French,
The war spirit of England she did quench.

The name was spoken by the French Assaye,
An s and the e were dropped at a later day.
Because of war on the Huguenots so much,
They took refuge among the peace loving Dutch.

Spain ruled Holland with an iron hand,
War existed quite universally over the land.
In Western Europe everywhere was strife,
The toll of a Protestant was to pay with his life.

Always at war with the inflooding sea,
From this enemy the Dutch will never be free-
This warfare has made them determined and brave,
They would turn in the sea their liberty to save.

An early Assaye married a Hollandish dame.
That she was wealthy some people claim.
Philip of Spain in his tyrannical ire,
Burned Dutch cities, their home he did fire.

The Spanish Inquisition drove many away.
The Assayes left Holland early so writers say.
They felt they had stood all they could endure,
Persecuted French yielded to Canada's lure.

In the Eighteenth Century the Asays we find,
Having settled in Acadia with those of their kind.
Thinking the land was owned by the French,
They raised the French flag and themselves did entrench.

For over a century the French lived in the land.
Prosperity sprang up on every hand.
These people at last a haven had found,
Nothing to annoy them, not even a sound.

It was autumn with in walked, one day -
At noon time - into the busy village of Grand Pre -
An English officer with papers from the King.
Into the church he was everyone to bring.

Everyone came whether from fields or from loom.
Hastily they filled every inch in that room.
The windows were locked, the door was barred,
While about the building was placed a guard.

There was breathless stillness - not a sound -
Never a person the reason had found.
Now stood before them in haughty mein,
The King's representative, rather tall and lean.

He said that it was his Majesty's decree,
That every Frenchman there should be
Immediately transplanted to other lands.
He was sorry but it was the King's commands.

'Tis sad indeed - the most heartless way,
These innocent people were treated that day.
They were taken direct to the water's deep,
Into row boats they were loaded like sheep.

A boat would move on with load complete.
Families were parted never again to meet.
Some boats sailed one way some another,
Separating children from father and mother.

One boat with rather an interesting fate,
Carried an Asay with his dear mate.
On the Isle of Jersey this boat did land.
The Asays sprang from these parents, grand.

Joseph Asay crossed to New Jersey's shore.
Two sons they had and possible more.
Isaac at Trenton a gardener became.
Joseph at Camden attained a like fame.

The land was rich, was made by the sea.
For gardening it was as rich as rich could be.
These fore-parents settled here in 1775.
They clustered together like bees in a hive.

It is said that the Asays are of worthy descent,
Industrious, honest, and of well meaning intent.
In those early days valuable land they got,
For to create town sites this land later was bot.

Not all were farmers so we are told,
Some were ministers - Christian teachers bold.
Some had trades - some wealth allowed.
As a family they were said to be rather proud.

Restless youth at length came west.
The first to come, hi faith to attest,
Was our grandfather Joseph and his family, all.
They had gladly heeded the missionary call.

Westward others got the moving craze.
Into many states the trails they did blaze.
Into Illinois Alford moved his worthy dame,
While to Iowa Richard and his wife came.

Out to Colorado moved Sol, Richard's Brother.
While the attractions of South Dakota lured another.
Two Asay brothers established a trading post,
In Nebraska, the state by them liked most.

The Asays are today all over the union.
Our organization hopes to get into communion
With all the branches, scattered everywhere,
And add them to our family tree, now quite bare.

A purpose of this union of Asays here,
To not only unite those living near,
But to include in our great family tree
All of our name, wherever they may be.

And not only the living but also the dead,
We hope to seal to our great family head.
Mortal time will at last be done away,
We will all know each other at some future day.

No one is happy for to live all alone.
When, beyond, at the foot of our Father's throne,
We will join with the family both far and near.
Our joy will be complete in a circle so dear.

It is a call made of one, a call from above,
To search fro the records of those whom we love.
The noblest labor asked of you and me,
Is helping establish one's own family tree.
Sarah Martha Asay

I'm looking for information on a woman,
Sarah Martha Asay. She married my ancestor
Henry Robinson Hall in the 1860's. Her
name was recorded as Sarah Martha Metz, and
we think Metz was a name she had from a
previous marriage. Alternatively, that might
have been her maiden name, with Asay being
her name from a previous marriage.

I can be reached at bentz@bentz-engineering.com

Bryan

Who was Mrs. Mary Asay, Burlington County, 110 years old?

Does anyone know of a Mrs. Mary Asay of Burlington County who lived to be 110 years old? She was probably born in the early 1800s.

I'm not exactly sure how she was related but according to a story in the Asbury Park Press newspaper, she was an aunt to my great-great-grandfather, whose parents or siblings I'm trying to discover. If I can identify her or her husband I may have a lead.

Thanks.
Jo

How is Asay pronounced?

Based on the various spellings I've seen, I always pronounce it long-A, soft-S, long-E, with the emphasis on the first syllable because that's what it looks like they're trying to spell (Asy, Asey, Acey, Ase, Ace...)

No matter how many times I say it to people, when they see it written (like on a cemetery record) they pronounce it long-A, soft-S, long-A with the emphasis on the second syllable.

So, which way is it?
Thanks for any input.
Jo

Based on my first cousin Russ Harrison's earlier research I thought Daniel had been married thrice but it appears it was Sarah, or maybe they both were.

The obit I posted before this doesn't mention her maiden name but Russ had it as Bowman.

The US Fed census has Daniel's middle initial as V but I have a cemetery transcription from Fairview Cemetery listing him as the owner of the plot and it has his middle initial as D. I don't know where the transcription originated and haven't checked on the discrepancy yet.

If anyone has information on either Sarah E. Bowman Carver Asay or Daniel V or D Asay, I'd like to hear from you.

I am descended from their daughter Amanda and husband Henry B.
Obit: Mrs. Sarah E. Asay, 1896 Red Bank, NJ, wife of Daniel

I'm just beginning my research on my Asay line with gggrandparents, Daniel & Sarah Asay of NJ and
I found the following obit at http://www.distantcousin.com/obits/nj/1800/1896/May/27.html

May 27, 1896

Death Notice:
ASAY - At Red Bank, on Monday, May 25th, Sarah E., wife of Daniel Asay, aged 51 years and 8 months.

Obituary:
Mrs. Sarah E. Asay, wife of Daniel Asay, died suddenly at her home on Catherine street on Sunday night, shortly after midnight of heart disease, aged 51 years. She had been a member of the Methodist church for a number of years and had attended service on Sunday night. Shortly after returning home from church she complained of feeling sick, but she seemingly grew better again. She went to bed and about midnight she awoke her husband and again complained of feeling sick. Mr. Asay went immediately for a doctor but she died about an hour later. She was conscious until her death.

Mrs. Asay had been married three times and six children survive her. They are J. V. Carver of Red Bank and William Carver of Philadelphia by her second marriage, and Mrs. Laura Morris of Red Bank, Mrs. H. B. Harrison of Jersey City, and Misses Susie and Nellie Asay of Red Bank. She was a member of the lodge of Daughters of Liberty. Her funeral was held this morning at the First Methodist church. The interment was at Fair View.

I am interested in the family of James ASAY, b. 1800, Burlington Co, NJ, m. Elizabeth Gaskill. I believe his parents were John ASAY and Jane (unknown) - no dates. I have been unable to connect these people to the other ASAYs in NJ in the late 1700s. Any information or leads appreciated.

Old Asay photos

I have copies of old photos -- probably tintypes, orignally -- that are supposedly of an Asay couple from Scotland.

All I know about them is that they had a daughter Ellen who was born in Illiniois about 1850 to 1854.

If you think this couple may be your ancesters, I would be happy to email you a digital copy of the pictures.

The people in the photos are my gggrandparents, and I would dearly love to have any further clues.

Penny

If any one could point me in the right direction so I may try and build a family tree I would appreciate it. I am the last asay in my family and I just had a daughter so I still may be.

I am trying to trace my ancestors in Delaware.
My grandfather's name was Irvy Franklin or Franklin Irvy
or some other variation of Irvy (Irvan, etc).
He was born in 1889. He had a brother named
John and a sister Annie. There apparently were not
many Asay who lived in Delaware. I have only
identified two of them. A John A who was a Methodist
minister and a Robins (Asay and Asey). If
you have any info, please let me know. Thanks.

V. Daniel Asey or Asay

Looking for info on Daniel Asey, my greatgreatgrandfather on my greatgrandmothers side. I know that he was born in New Jersey in 1854. In the 1900 census, he is listed on Herbert Ave. in Shrewsbury, but I think that it's actually Red Bank. I know that he was a mason, and I've been told that he played a big part in building the seawall in Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach. I've also been told that he owned alot of properties in the Red Bank area. I've never met anyone from that side of my family, and I would very much like to. If anyone has any info, please let me know, thanks.

Daniel V. Asay

Hi,
Have you ever heard of any connection to Red Bank, New Jersey? From what I've been told, my line started in NYC, came south, some settled in the Newark, Patterson area, and some came down to Red Bank. None of the names you mentioned rings a bell, but my family isn't much help either.
Do you have any connections to the Asay family? My Greatgrandmothers fathers name was Daniel V. Asay, he was 99 when he died in the 1930's. My greatgrandparents were Henry B. Harrison and Amanda Asay Harrison. They were married probably in the early 1880's, because my grandfather, Irving S. Harrison, was born around 1885-1890.
Let me know if anything rings a bell.
Russ Harrison

Jemima Asey from NJ

Hello from Texas.
I am trying to find out more information on the families of Michael Asay and a daughter, Jemima Asay.
Michael, so the family stories go, was an early Dutch settler. I'm guessing he was born in the mid 1700s. His wife's name was Susan. Thay had a daughter, Jemima, born 19 June 1790 in Buddtow, NJ. She died 24 Oct 1882 in Weymouth (I believe now called Estelle Manor), NJ. She married a Charles Campbell on 26 April 1806 and they had 9 offspring.

Does Anyone have any record of these people? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can shed further light on this family as I have very little. Jemima was my G-G-G-grandmother on my mother's side.
Thanks for any information you would like to share!!

Recently I have been lead to believe that my ggggreat grandmother was Susan ASAY/ASY b. 21 Apr 1791, probably NJ (possibly Burlington County) who married before 1814 John G. ZELLEY. From "The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans": Volume IX page 60: "REHN, Frank Knox Morton, artist, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., April 12, 1848; son of Professor Isaac and Abigail Francis (Zelly) Rehn grandson of James and Susanna (Asy) Zelly." I would appreciate any information that might lead to prove her maiden name. Thanks jack_bowman@prefer.net
