I would be very interested in seeing this book... My great grandma is named Norma Asay and is the daughter of Irvin Asay. I have been trying to trace the Asay line back, but I have hit a pretty large dead end in New Jersey... If at all possibly, I would immensely appreciate the help.

John A. Asay and Elsie (Longacre)

I am working primarily on the Kreer line. I have found the following Asay relations I would like help with:

Edna Bertha Asay, daughter John A. and Elsie N., b. 1881, marries Horace Kreer. They are burried in Gracelawn Cemetery in New Castle, Delaware. Siblings of Edna (my grandmother) include Earl, Elva, and John.(Edna has a daughter before this marriage named Grace Asay-my aunt).

I am also interested in a John S. Asay who marries a Anna Cale. I believe she may have a relative Margaret (Maggie)Cale who marries a James Boone and has a daughter LuLu. LuLu Boone(b. 1899) marries Ernest Kreer in Wilmington in 1911.

Any and all help on on these lines would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello,
You may be looking for Elizabeth Asay, daughter of Joseph Asay b. 1771 (Joseph has been listed by some Asay researchers to have been born at Asay Springs, Burlington County - now Mercer County - NJ. Others disagree. This Joseph Asay married Phoebe Butcher of Philadelphia. Their children have been listed as Joseph Jr. b. 1791 mrd. Sarah Pitman; John, b. 1793, mrd. Elizabeth Gowans; James, b. 1795, mrd. Ann Dirk, Betsey (YOUR ELIZABETH?)Asay b. 1801 mrd. Mr. Shinn; Edna, b. 1799, and Isaac Asay, b. 1799 in Springfield NJ mrd. Phoebe Johnson. AGAIN, some Asay researchers disagree about the parentage of this family. Some say Joseph Asay's parents were Jacob Asay and Elizabeth Lee, married 1780 in Burlington Co. NJ.

The Isaac Asay family has been fairly well documented, as has his son, joseph Asay, who became a Morman and moved to Utah. Are you related to the Shinn family or Asay family?

I'm trying to find info on Elizabeth Asay who was married to John Shinn in Burlington, New Jersey in 1803. I've heard that her father was named James, John, Jacob, or Jonathan, that his last name might have been Easey or Easay and that her mother might have been Jane Shreve or Jane Shrieve... Honestly, I've heard and found so many contradictory things when it comes to her parents I don't know what to believe. If anyone can help me with this puzzle, I'd be grateful. I believe she was born in Springfield Twp. in 1785, but who knows... Thanks to anyone who might be willing to share info. Also, if anyone is connected with this Elizabeth Asay and her children, I'd love to exchange Shinn info with you! Thanks.

I haven't gotten back far enough to know if our line comes from Samuel & Sarah yet. I do have Daniel V. Asay's parents. They were Edward P. Asay & Hannah VanNote. I also have a clue that Edward's parents were Charles Asay and Mary Seeds but no proof yet. I'm trying to work on that now.

As for Sarah E. Bowman (aka Sallie) I was able to find out that she was married 3 times to 1) John Ashmore 2) Gustaves A. Carver and 3) Daniel V. Asay, and that her mother was Ellen who was widowed before 1850. I don't know who her husband was. Ellen then married a blacksmith named William Jackson of Upper Freehold. I think it was the William Jackson who was the postmaster at Fillmore, near Cream Ridge, mentioned in the *History of Monmouth County* by Lewis on page 426. William & their son Joseph are buried at the Cream Ridge cemetery. I didn't find Ellen's stone but there were some that were unreadable. Sarah and Daniel were married at Cream Ridge, too.

The clue about Charles Asay came from a newspaper article about how long-lived Daniel V. Asay's family was. It said they had an Aunt Mary who lived to be 110. It turned out to be 114 and her death certificate said her parents were Charles Asay and Mary Seeds, and that she was born in Philadelphia in 1823. That would make her Edward's sister, although he was born in Burlington County, NJ, c1818-1820. It also mentioned a Bible that her birth was recorded in. So, if you have any information about a Charles Asay, a Mary Seeds, or an Asay Bible...

I've already checked out the Charles & Mary in Northern Liberties, Pa, (both c1804) and ruled them out. They don't have the right age children in the census.

There is a Charles W. Asay buried at the Wrightstown Methodist cemetery who was also born about 1804 but I can't even find him in a census. He died in 1869 so should be in a few of them but I can't find him.

That's as far as I've gotten with the Asays and Bowmans. Do you have any Charles' in your files?

Jo

I've found out that this Asay/Metz story is not true.

The true story is Michael Asay married Johannes Konrad Metz's daughter Elizabeth.

From the Writing of Almira Alice Asay:

"Johannes Konrad Metz was one of the many Kassel, Hesse soldiers that came from Germany and served to help the British in the Revolutionary War and lived until after that war and changed his loyalities and remained in America. And since my great grandfather Jacob Asay's brother, my great grand uncle Michael Asay, born 1773 in Wrightstown, Burlington, New Jersey, married Johannes Konrad Metz's daughter Elizabeth Metz in 1799 in Burlington County, New Jersey, later in life for my great grandfather Jacob Asay it was a notable honor for him to add Metz as a middle name to his name and be known as Jacob Metz Asay."

The many Writings by Almira Alice Asay McNamara are in the possession of the family of Clarence Linden "Buster" Crabbe.

You can see this on RootWeb WorldConnect, it's on there twice, under the database "2crabbe1450" at
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=2crabbe1450

and "crabbe1450" at
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=crabbe1450

Re: Asay Springs near the Town of Crosswicks N.J.

Dale:
Here's a response from a Hamilton Township historian when I asked about the location of Asay Springs...still near Crosswicks but a little more detail --

If I had to guess, I would place it in the area beyond Pearsonville Church. A news clipping from William McGalliard in 1911 gives a tantalizing hint as to the approximate location:

*I am located just one mile east of White City, where ex-Senator Pfeiffer seems confident in making the test of artesial wells. I am also one quarter mile from Asay Spring, from which Bordentown is now getting the best of water, and I have no doubt that this whole territory east of Trenton from the Lalor Farm to Crosswicks has a stream of water which will supply three cities the size of Trenton, which is proven by the countless springs at the foot of the bluff from the Lalor Farm to Crosswicks."

(The McGalliard home was on White Horse Mercerville Road and E. McGalliard Avenue where there is currently a funeral home.)

Hope that helps.
Jo
