Check 1900 and 1920 Federal censuses of Okla. A James W. Asberry is listed w/family in 1900. In the 1920 one he is listed as Jimsey Asberry a widower, boarder and brother to head of household, Lewis McGilbra. He is listed as Indian. Lewis McGilbra is my husband's Great Grandfather, but we do not have a clue how Jimsey is a brother.

I'm also searching for John L Asberry, he is one of my great grandfathers. I found John and Alta in the 1900 Arkansas census. Along with 3 of their daughters Dora Lillie and Hellen. Also a Matildia Freeman was listed along with them. Their daughter Agnes was my Grandmother she married Virgil Shivers which was my Grandfather. Hope this helps a little.

Just to let you know (and I'm taking this from memory), the Bishop Francis Asbury said on his deathbed something to the effect that if anyone named their child after him they would gain great rewards. Of course the Bishop was talking about Heavenly rewards, but a huge amount of people named their sons Francis Asbury Whatever, or gave them a middle name of Asbury. I would say your gg grandfather was probably born within a couple of decades after the Bishop's death in 1816. (This makes it pretty tough to research the surname Asbury as so many people were given the middle name of Asbury that are of no relation at all)

If he was born after 1870, I would say there is a chance he was named after an Asbury relative, as it appears as if people quit naming their children after the Bishop by then.

Craig Asbury

(Asbury and Asberry are the same surname - I won't get into the variation of spelling).

I have a Joseph Asberry/Asbury on my family tree married to Nancy Lile, daughter of James Lile and Mildred Woodward, February 25, 1821 in Green County, KY. I also have a Samuel Asbury married to Lucy Slinker, daughter of Frederick Slinker and Susannah Payne, April 18, 1821. Samuel Asbury was also a member of Trammel's Creek Baptist Church. If you think this is a connection, I would be happy to share what I have. Linda Foster

Sarah Asbury was the daughter of William Asbury and Jane Unknown. (Some people say it is Jean Ankerum, but I have no proof)

After William Asbury of Fauquier County, VA died (around 1793), the widow Jane Asbury and half the children moved to Harrison County, (W) VA and the other half of the children moved to KY.

Below is a chancery case that involves two twin slaves originally owned by Jane Asbury where some folks sue the Asbury’s over the ownership. I just included the pertinent genealogy info.

Harrison County, WV Courthouse, Clarksburg, WV, Circuit Court
Chancery Case #75-17, Henry Asberry
Signed and witnessed on Oct 20, 1818

……That Jane Asberry late of Harrison County was the widow relict and administratrix of William Asberry deceased and that Henry Asbury, George Asberry, William Asberry, Thomas Asberry, Joseph Asberry, John Asberry (who is now dead), Nancy Hitchcock (the wife of William Hitchcock), Mary Lake (who is now dead leaving William Lake her husband surviving), Hannah Dawson, and Sarah Parker (wife of Benjamin Parker) were the only children of the said William Asberry deceased and survived him at the time of his death……..

Other related items:
Jnae Asbury died around 1816.
I am related to Thomas Asbury that was married to Elizabeth Bartlett and he died around 1824.

Question - do you know if any of the Parker descendants ended up in Missouri?

When the well known Bishop Asbury came over from England, he told his congregations that if they named their children after him that they would have good fortune in the new country (America). This story has been documented and the proof is on file at the University of Virginai Digital Library. Go to the libart online and you can read about him.

Asberry/Asbury family connection to Shugarts?

Hi Asberry family,
Can anyone tell me where the name Asberry/Asbury might fit into the Shugart family? Did some family members marry Shugarts? My husband's dad, grandfather and a gg-uncle(and I think a few cousins)have that name either as a middle name or as a first name(gg-uncle). Earl B.C. Shugart(which is my husband's line) came from VA & TN areas where there were nearby towns with those names. Asberrys, VA, just north of Marion and Asbury, TN just east of Knoxville. So I am assuming the Asberry/Asbury families lived near by. Any ideas out there?
Thanks,
Janet

There was a Bishop Francis Asbury that was a Methodist minister in America right before and after the Rev War. He traveled throughout the country. In his will he mentioned something about people being rewarded if they would name their children after him, so there are a great number of people with the middle name of Asbury (and sometimes with the first name of Francis) that are no relation to the Asbury family. So if a family member has the given names of Francis or Asbury that was born after 1816, it is highly possible they were named after the Bishop and not a family member.

I'm sorry, Kirk. I have no Mary ASBERRY or Simon WELCH in my database. I have ancestors of other surnames in Benton Co., AR, but none of them married into the ASBERRY/ASBURY clan. My ASBERRYS (often spelled ASBURY) migrated to Crawford Co., AR from IL, via Iron and/or Butler Co., MO, and Lawrence Co., AR. They got to Crawford Co., AR from Lawrence Co., AR, via the White and Arkansas River system on a makeshift flatboat, so it is unlikely that they visited Benton Co., AR

Ancestors of John Lindsay ASBERRY

Interested persons should review my previous messages of August 8, 2000 and May 21, 2001 on this same message board.

I have found records in Butler County and Iron County, MO which indicate that a Matilda ASHER or ABSHER married Lindsey ASHBERRY or Linsey ASBERRY on 26 February 1863. This marriage is recorded in Butler County Marriage Book A, page 86 as: "Linsey ASBERRY to Matilda ASHER, 2/26/1863"

In the Iron County, MO marriage book A (1857-1881), page 74, what I believe to be the same marriage is recorded as, "Lindsey ASHBERRY to Matilda ABSHER, 2/26/1863; by Amos B. LASHLEY, MG, Old Baptist." This may indicate that the marriage took place in Iron County.

In the 1860 Beaver Dam Township, Butler County, MO census, pages 28-29; Sheet 602, Dwelling # 199, Family 211: I found "Metilda" ABSHER, Age 26, MO, House Keeper; living (probably wife of) in the John ABSHER Household; John was Age 65, born in KY; a Farmer; Children in the household, in order listed from top to bottom, were: William ABSHER, Age 5, born in MO; T. J. (a male) ABSHER, Age 1, born in MO; M. (a female) ABSHER, Age 11, born in MO (listed last and out of age order, probably not Matilda's natural child).

If anyone has information concerning any of these parties, I could use help in connecting the facts. I believe that this "Metilda ABSHER" is probably the mother of John Lindsay ASBERRY, born in MO in November 1863. One problem I have is that no ABSHER children were found in John Lindsay ASBERRY's household in the 1870 Butler Co., MO census.

John Lindsay ASBERRY of MO/AR/OK

I am searching for the parents of my maternal ggrandfather, John Lindsay ASBERRY, born in MO, 25 Nov. 1863, died in Fame, McIntosh Co., OK 18 Feb. 1918.
John may have been orphaned before 11 June 1880. On that date, according to 1880 AR census data, John was living with the
William HUTSON (HUDSON, also a maternal gggrandfather)in Lawrence Co., AR, in Marion Township. John was listed as a "Son", indicating that he may have
been (informally?) adopted by the HUDSONs. Later, on 21 April 1866, John married the oldest HUDSON GIRL, Alta J., in Crawford Co., AR.
John Alta had six children, 4 of whom survived to adulthood.
I am slowly working my way through MO census data for all counties, but have not had any luck finding John or his family among all the MO ASBERRYs.
John variously spelled his surname: ASBERRY, ASBERY, ASBURY.
Can anyone help?
