Hi Donna
I’m directly related to both John Asbill (m. Elizabeth Coyle) and his brother William Asbill (m. Nar-nee Ross).
John & Elizabeth’s son, Tyre (b.1809) married his first cousin, Sarah (Sally), who was the daughter of William & Nar-nee.
Tyre and Sally (m. 1828 in Madi County, KY), are my gg- grandparents.
My gg-grandfather, Tyre took his family across the plains to Oregon in the 1840’s and then went on to settle in Sonoma County, California. Tyre and Sally had several children: Pierce, Frank M., John, Europe, Martha, Nancy, Elizabeth & Caroline. I may be forgetting one or two.
Tyre and Sally’s oldest son, Pierce, is my great-grandfather. Pierce married very late in life, around age 50. He married Katie Robertson in 1880 in Mendocino County CA. Katie was just 18. They had three children, Frank, Irma (my grandmother), and Sybil. The only one I ever met was Sybil. Frank and my grandma Irma were already dead when I was born in 1962.
My father, Keith Kane, who is still living (92 yrs old) is the only grandson of Pierce Asbill. Pierce died in 1902, so my dad never knew him, but he knew Katie.
Have you ever read the book “Genocide & Vendetta It’s got a chapter on my great-grandfather Pierce and his brother, Frank M. (Frank used the spelling Azbill) The book chronicles the destruction of the Northern Calfornia Indian tribes by white settlers. I've always found it ironic that the Asbill brothers were involved in the killing and kidnapping of Indians when they surely must have known they had Cherokee blood themselves. Apparently they both claimed to be of French Basque origin, something I've never been able to substantiate.
Donna, Do you still live in Chico? I know another Asbill descendant who lives in Paradise CA. Her name is Diana Shuey and she is descended from Tyre’s brother, William Dan Asbill ,who settled in Lake County CA. I have info on them too and photos of the broken grave markers of Sally and Tyre from Lake County. Most people thought they died in Bodega, but the fact is, they had gone to live with William Dan in their later years and died in Lake County.
