Re: Asbridge family tree info

Hello Michael, I have some Asbridge information from the U.S side. I just turned 50 and this has piqued my interest in learning about my family history. I created an account on Ancestry.com after seeing a commercial on the television about the 1930 census I want to start researching before I am not able to find out more from my still living relatives and their remembrances. Here is a brief on my knowledge: I am Daniel Wayne Asbridge, my father is Kenneth Wayne Asbridge. He married a French woman, while stationed in the U.S. Army in Metz, France in 1959-60. Her name is Liliane Clare Asbridge my mother, maiden name Bernard, my grandfather on her side, Roger fought in the French Foreign Legion and received a rifle shot in the arm and he was limited in use of that arm. I remember as a child he showed me the scar from the bullet wound. My grandfather was RB (Robert B. Asbridge) born 1908-1975, 67 years old born in Dyersberg, TN. He had a nickname "Jack". His wife was Gladys Gertrude, maiden name Peckenpaugh, she was born in 1910 and passed in 2006 at 96 years old. I saw the commercial on the television about the 1930 census at Ancestry.com and checked it and there they were my Grandpa and Grandma! I have attached the screenshot from that census, his listing is at the top. Robert "RB Asbridge, wife Gladys, and daughter my aunt Laverne. They lived in Dyersberg, Tennessee. I do know that in my youth I visited Dyersberg a few times and attended my grandfathers funeral in 75 when I was 15. I also have a great, great, grandmother that I met when i was there but dont recollect her name but they all called her "maw". She was over 100 and still sit out on the porch chewing tobacco and had a spitoon there next to her rocking chair. Her skin was a deep red like leather. My father said she was mostly Cherokee Indian, which is in my bloodline. How that was I do not know but am interested in seeking my past. Later, in years I'm not sure exactly, late 50's, my grandparents moved to Lansing, Michigan and that is when I was born in 62. I now live in El Paso, Texas after my time in the U.S. Army.

Hi Diane,
Great to hear from you. I do have you on my family tree and have met your aunt Josephine a few years ago. We are second cousins once removed with George Ashbridge 1862-1957 as our common ancestor. I have photos of him and documents from the bobbin mill which his father Thomas ran. Later Thomas's eldest son Joseph bought the mill. I have been lucky to get photos and documents of both of these family members and wills from our ancesters way back to 1580. I am still hard at work doing research but the book is largly complete. I have traced our family back to around 1500 in Caldbeck. I discovered possibly our earliest ancester a Henry de Asbrigg who died in 1362 from the second out break of the black death. Our family name was spelt Asbrigg from this time until the 1600's when it was rewritten from the Norse spelling to English as Asbridge and then again altered to Ashbridge in the Victorian period. I have lots of information about our ancestors. Please email me at gary_ashbridge@hotmail.com where we can chat better.

Gary

Joseph Henry Asbridge's son Will was my great-grandfather. His daugher Lennie (my grandmother) told me stories of her family, when I was a little girl. She said that the Asbridges came down from Ohio, into Kentucky, and for a while settled near Princeton, KY. I have found several Asbridges in Princeton around 1850, but I have not been able to locate Joseph Henry on a census record there yet.
The earliest census that I found Joseph Henry in was for Obion Co. TN in 1860.
If you're still looking, from what I have pieced together, sons Joseph K. and Martin K. moved to Caldwell, County, KY prior to 1840. Joseph K. later purchased land and moved to Lyon, County, KY. Best I can figure, Martin K. (my gggGrandfather) remained in Caldwell, County. It's possible they took their father Joseph or their father took them from North Carolina to Kentucky or they moved as a family group. Best guess I would start in Caldwell, Co around Princeton unless you know the exact location of the Graveyard. There are quite a few Asbridge's in KY that may be decended from the same family.

Let me know if your search is fruitful, haven't made it up there as yet.

Do you have a location on the cemetary you mentioned?

I'm suspicious that someone may have gotten the son & father confused and Joseph & Sarah remained in North Carolina.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Hi Gary

Thank you for getting back to me. Thomas Ashbridge born in 1835 was also my Great Great Grandad. My Great Grandad was William Ashbridge (1883) who was married to Martha Carr (1886). Who is your Great Grandad in this line as I have the list of Thomas's children. I am not sure what else I can tell you as I havent actually managed to get much further than this I am afraid. Although I would be really interested to hear about what you have found out. Have you visited Caldbeck before? I used to go quite a lot when I was younger as I had some relatives that still lived there altough not sure if we do now.

looking forward to hearing from you.
karen
Hi Gary My name is Janice and I have just started family research in August so have only just seen your message on the Asbridge/Ashbridge board. My Grt Grt grandfather Nicholas Walker married Elizabeth Asbridge at Caldbeck on April 6th 1839. He was a bobbin manufacturer( as were a lot of Walkers from this area). They were married by Banns. After having five children, Elizabeth died in1854 and her husband remarried and had a second family.

Hi Mike I have been given your name by Gary Ashbridge. He said you have done loads of work on the Asbridge/Ashbridge family tree. My grt grt grandmother came from Caldbeck and was called Elizabeth Asbridge. Her father was called John. She married my grt grt grandfather in April 1839.They had at least 5 children if not 6.My grt grt grandfathers name was Nicholas Walker and he was a bobbin manufacturer of Friar Hall Sebergham but I have been told that it was actually in Caldbeck. I have contacted two sisters in Caldbeck called Ashbridge and they have told me these facts. I have just received my grt grt grandparents marriage cert from a relative of mine in London. I have only just started my family research in August and my head is whirring around on my shoulders with all the relatives that are popping up from all over the place. Please get back to me ?best wishes Janice.

Hello Andrea and Michael

The name As(h)bridge is thought to have originated in the small village of Caldbeck, Cumbria, UK. Records show that the name was spelt Asbrigg in the middle 1500s. The name means ash tree by a bridge. Between 1600 and 1750 the As(h)bridge family were numerous and prosperous in many towns and villages in the north of the then Cumberland (changed 1974 to Cumbria, when county boundaries were changed). From the mid 1700s many members of the family were know to migrate to other districts and counties. One branch of the family is known to have emigrated to Provo, Utah, their descendants spreading throughout the USA.
A George Ashbridge, said to have been born in Yorkshire, UK is known to have fathered a dynasty throughout the USA and Canada, where there is a Ashbridge house restored to it's original. Many Ashbridge's meet there each year.
If you wish I could send you my Ashbridge tree by Gedcon file, off list.
Yours
Mike Evans

Ashbridge / Asbridge family tree

I live in Cumbria (Previously Cumberland) England, and have been researching my Ashbridge family tree. It is believed this is where the As(h)bridge name originated.
The earliest that I have traced my tree back to is a Moses Asbridge in 1764, when he married an Elizabeth Hills.
He was a Mariner, as was some of his decendants.
I would be interested to know if anyone has info on any these that may have emigrated to America, in particular -
Thomas & Mary Asbridge, Mariner, some time after 1834?
or his brother John, possibly from Whitehaven, Cumberland.
