Mary Ann Miller was born in Quebec City in 1836 to William Miller (1810-1872) who was a native of Workington, Cumberland, England and his first wife, Mary Short. (William remarried in 1840 to Frances Hayden (1811-1883). Mary Ann married in 1852 to James Smith (died 1860) and had three daughters; Mary (Smith) Wotton (1853-1933), Frances (Smith) Slater (1856-1927), and Sarah Jane Smith (born 1858) and possibly a fourth daughter whose name is unknown. In 1862 Mary Ann remarried to Joseph Ash (died 1907) a soldier in H.M. 17th Regiment of Foot which left Quebec in 1865 for England. The couple had at least five sons viz; George (1866-1921), Joseph (1868-1933), John (b. 1871), James (b. 1873), and William (b. 1878). After 1866 the family is believed to have been in England and then the West Indies and by 1868 in Newfoundland before coming back to Canada in 1871 and settling, by 1871, in Sarnia. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Mary Ann's younger half-sister Ellen (Miller) Lutman (1849-1935) lived with her family in London, Ontario after 1875.
