Information on John Ashbrook

Hello. I've just started putting together the genealogy of my mother's family. My maternal grandmother was Mary Ashbrook, daughter of Henry Clay Ashbrook, son of Aaron Ashbrook. I've traced the line all the way back to John "the Antelope" Ashbrook. If anyone can give me further information on John Ashbrook's life before leaving Ireland, it would be most appreciated. Thank you. Also, any information on the Ashbrook family currently in VA, OH and KY.

Sophia Ashbrook (1831-1880) & Edmond Beasley

Hey Ashbrook peeps! :)

I'm looking up my family tree (who would have guessed THAT?) and am stuck on Sophia Ashbrook (1831-1880). I've seen where she married Edmond Beasley on 1/16/1857 and had a bunch of Beasley kids, but that she also had Sebron Francis Asbhrook, Nancy W. Ashbrook, and John Wesley Ashbrook all before her marriage date to Edmond Beasley. My guess is that she was previously married to an Ashbrook. Is that a good guess? LOL... i have found NOTHING on her Ashbrook husband OR on her having a maiden name other than Ashbrook. Is it possible that she had 3 children out of wedlock and they just took her maiden name? Seems so scandalous for that time period! If anyone has any information that can help, I would really appreciate it!

I am not sure that you will get this, as it has been awhile. I have given up, and then restarted again. I only know that my grandfather, Vincent Ashbrook married Ethel Finns (but found her under Fines, Fins, Kins she could not read or write, except her name that my dad taught her) Around 1920 is when they were married. My father is alive and will ask more questions. I know they lived in Harlan, KY in 1930's. He was born in Russell Co. and she was born in Wise County Virginia. They had 14 children together. My father Morton Kyle Ashbrook was the 13th born. There are only 3 left living. Vince was born approximately around 1888 or 1892 (found 2 dates) Russell County in VA. He was a lot older than Ethel. She remarried twice after he passed. she passed approximatel in 1978. I know that she moved here in Indiana with her children around 1960 or so. I am not sure if they are related to your family or not. I am going to try to get some information from my father about any uncles or Aunts named Ashbrook. I think I have found his father, and his grandparents, which is William B. and Rosa Ashbrook.

I found a website that I believe may have connected her to John Ashbrook and Mary Chenoweth. The website is http://www.chenowethsite.com. Please let me know if this is the same America Ashbrook. I hope this helps, keep in touch.

Hi, I'm interested in a 2 or 3 generation descendant chart of John Ashbrook who came to America from Ireland. My ancestors were buried in the Ashbrook burial ground in Glendora, NJ and so I wanted to know a little more about John Ashbrook. You can email me at rware1@gmail.com.

Thanks much,
Rich Ware

Hi JoAnne.

I hope this email finds you well. I know it's been almost 7 years since you posted regarding John Ashbrook (11 May 2004), but I only joined mid last year and have just now stumbled across it. My direct ancestor was John Ware Sr. who was apparently buried in the Ashbrook grave yard in Glendora. Also his wife, Sarah Marple and his father Andrew Ware were probably buried there. I am writing a short review of John Ashbrook in my larger history on John Ware Sr. and Andrew Ware, and was hoping you could send me a short review of Ashbrook's life and anything you have on the Ashbrook grave yard. I want to make sure my facts are correct.

Thanks very much,
Rich Ware
Wheat Ridge, CO
rich@richwarephotography.com
After digging into some old family photographs, etc. I have found a page of an old family bible. The scanned file can be found in my family tree. It reads:

"Tho. Ashbrooke son of Peter Ashbrooke and Martha was born the fifthteenth day of October 1763."

It lists the following children of Thomas Ashbrooke:
Sarah Martin Ashbrook (b 1789), Mary Edwards Ashbrook (b 1791), ?Jame Wholeman Ashbrook (b 1793), Peter Muling Ashbrook (b 1795),Martha Woodson Ashbrook (b 1797) Thomas Washington Ashbrook (b 1800) Nancey Embrow Ashbrook (b 1802), Jordan Martin Ashbrook (b 1805), Bowling Robertson Ashbrook (b 1809)

I am still researching how/if this Peter Ashbrook is connected to the earlier Ashbrooks in Chesterfield.

Thomas Ashbrook

So I went to the county courthouse today (I live in Chesterfield!) and found the will for a Thomas Ashbrook, which listed Edna as his wife, and 9 children:

Peter M. Ashbrook, Thomas W. ,JORDAN M., Bowling R., Sarah M., Polly E.,?Jame (daughter), Martha, Nancy E.

This is listed in the will book 12 which is dated Sept 1830-April 1834.
The will is hard to read but it appears as if he died on April 9 1832.

I'm wondering if he is a descendent of Peter Ashbrook. I printed off Peter Ashbrook's will as well while I was there.

Laura
Hi Carole,

It was me who sent the message on Jordan M. Ashbrook. I appreciate you checking your records. He was born around 1803 and lived in Chesterfield, Va. He married a Martha Hancock in 1835. I have been searching for his fathers name for awhile now and have not had any luck. I'm planning on going to the county courthouse to do some research there. If any one has any information on this name, or maybe an M. Ashbrook born around the same time, I would love to take a look.

Thanks,

Laura

I was sent a message asking about Jordan Ashbrook but I was unable to get back to the message. My Ashbrook line has Peter Ashbrook for 3 generations. We do not have a Jordon Ashbrook in the family. You may have to check the "Antelope" John Ashbrook line. If you have a Chenowith in your line you are the John Ashbrook line. Our line has Baugh, Slayden. Good luck and good hunting. Carole

I am related to the other Ashbrook line from Virginia. Thomas Ashbrook came to Virginia in 1653. If there are 3 generations of Peter Ashbrook, then this is my line.
Thank you for the info. I gave my Antelope John Ashbrook info to David Ashbrook because this was his line.
Carole Ashbrook

My information comes down through his son Aaron and Aaron's son Levi. If you are interested, please contact me and I'll see if what we have might help you.

Mattie was married to a William Rossie Wilson in 1918 and had three boys: Estil, Lester and Elbert Leslie WIlson of Kentucky. Elbert Leslie is my grandfather.

Names associated with Mattie are: Thomas Ashbrook, Anna Lois, Garnet, Habart, Garner?. I'm not sure if these are parents names or siblings.

Mattie is my great-grandmother and is rumored to be at least half or full-blooded Indian. Tribes are to be determined, but again rumored to be Shoshone/Chippewa/Chickasaw Indian.

She died around the age of 95 in 1978. Born 1883.

ANy information or matches that anyone may have would be greatly appreciated!
If William and Harriet were married in Sedalia did they go back to Indiana for some time? Found them in 1870 in Indiana with children born there. It has to be the same people I think. Also think I have found Harriet just a little more checking. Found Julius Antoine at age 5 staying with my Grandparents. Think he was a nephew. Mary did send to me the marriage dates of Ashbrooks let me know if anyone needs it and I'll post it.
Sherri

Sherry, I think I may have found Harriet, at least I hope so. I found a Harriet Barnes age 6 in 1850 in Caldwell Co., Ohio. Her parents were John and Sally Barnes: sister Emeline 14, Betsy 12, son Addison 10, Anna (Aura) 8 . Since there was a John Barnes (Brams) at the wedding maybe this is her. I have never found any Brams at all that were even close. Could this be it???I'd like your opinion. Also found an Elizabeth(Ashbrook) Hix married to Alexander in Marion Co. Ind. 1860 with 2 Ashbrook children Charles J. 19 and Hulda J. 16 living with them. We know this is not William and Harriet's children must be aunts and uncles or something. This Elizabeth has to be the one in the cemetery. What do you and Mary think??

I am not suggesting that the Hulda and Charles were William and Harriets, rather the brother and sister of William. They seem to name children generationally. W & H has a daughter named Hattie b. 1879, the adopted Hattie was b.1896 I think that was her daughter. (Just my opinion)Then Lola and Richard named a daughter Hattie, which she changed to Patrica when she got older. I remember my mother Mary (the baby) talking about Hattie and Big Hattie. Not her sister also named. Would you be willing to send me any and all photos you speak about. That would be so great. Could the Charles with Elizabeth Hix be Williams brother?1841- 1836 seems logical. My mind is spinning, more after I rest up. Spent all weekend looking up the adams that Lola married. The really gets a hold on you huh??? Thanks for your prompt reply. I am going to Independence to the library early May and hope to be able to find some stuff. I'll be happy to look for you let me know your wants. Do you think the person at the cemetery could fill us in on the Adams like he did for you on the Antoines? I will write if you send Info.
Thanks

Sherry, My opinion only, but it looks like the adopted Hattie 1896 could have been the daughter of the Hattie born in Ind in 1879, to William and Harriet. Time and all seems kinda likely. But it is just a guess. Would love a translation of the letter, if you would be so kind.
Sherri

I have a good feeling about this, if we can just tie up the loose ends. I get so tired and so excited at the same time. So many dead (so to speak) ends. I searched for your Thomas until I dropped cause of the book and all but nothing yet. Thanks, Mary

William was living in Marion Co when he enlisted. I'll see if I can't put Elizabeth with william. Do you remember just where her grave site was? Seems like it was right there with My Ashbrooks. Have you researched the Thomas of the revolutionary war? Is he with us at all? You said your Thomas was born in Virginia. For some reason I always thought Kentucky on mine. Maybe I should try Virginia. How long are you able to do this before going totally nuts? LOL Thanks for the yell I needed that.

and my BLACKBURNs and ASHBROOKs may be related to Peter Hicks of IN, yet you say Peter Ashbrook is not related to the John Ashbrook with daughter Mary who married William BLACKBURN.
Benjamin BLACKBURN married Mary HARTLEY
Drury HICKs married Margaret BLACKBURN
Hicks and Blackburns in Indiana, Peter Ashbrook in Indiana, same county, ashbrook Cemetary where a Hix is also in the Cemetary. Coincidence or fact that 2 ashbrook groups, Blackburns and Hicks are connected somehow.

Our Joseph Ashbrook seems to have been born about 1737, so may well be a brother to your Mary Ashbrook. Where did you get your information on Mary?

David
