Hi, I have Anthony Ashby as my gx6 grandfather, born abt 1692 at Dallowgill, N. Yorkshire. My particular line seems to have moved down to West Yorks in the mid 19th century and moved from farming to coal mining. My father was Herbert Ashby, born 6/9/1925. I probably cannot add much to what you already have, but would love to know if you have found anything else about Anthony.

Hi,

I am looking for any information that might help my search for the origins and death of Robert Ashby. He is found on the 1841 census living in Denmark St in Bloomsbury, Middlesex, England, with his wife Lucy and his son William Thomas Ashby (on the transcription they have given the surname as Ashley). His date of birth on the census is abt 1816. It says he was not born in the county of Middlesex.

On his marriage certificate of 23rd July 1838 his father is given as William Ashby. I can find no other record of Robert. However, he must have died before 1849, as his wife Lucy married again in The Strand, to a John Garness.

Andy

My mom, Vada married Dewey Fidler in 1935. They are both deceased. Aunt Francis, Uncle Vaughn and I belive Aunt Lucille is deceased also, not sure she has a daughter in the Louisville,Ky area. All I can remember right now is that her name is Janice, can't remember the last name. Only seen Aunt Lucille once. At one time my sister had given me the address for Janice, her daughter. I will look.
I was told that Hattie was cherokee, would like to find out the heritage, behind this. If you can. I am very glad that I came across this artical. Catharine was born in 1830, and ended up marrying a Ben F.
Hi Andy
No Robert Ashby in our family as yet but my Ashby's came from Bishop's Stortford at about the right time for his birth and then moved to Sloane Square Middlesex. So a very long shot indeed but at least it gives you a possible location for Robert's birth.

Happy hunting

Dee

This may be of some help. I know of two different Ashby lines from Halifax Co. Va. My line line, Cuthbert Ashby b 1784, d after 1850 in Washington Co Va. John W. Ashby , Cuthbert's brother, b. abt 1779 d 1857 in Stokes Co. NC.

The other line, Joseph Ashby Sr b about 1759 Halifax Co Va d 1848 Halifax Co Va. A son of this Joseph, John Ashby, moved his family to Cole Co Ill in early 1800s. This line has been researched by Nellie Ashby Collins and Melanie Ashby. they can be contacted by e mail.
I took a closer look at this couple on my tree and realized that the marriage date is 1780 but Judith's birth year is 1770. I checked a few other trees and found the same result, plus one son, Robert, born in 1776. I rather doubt that the marriage was delayed four years after his birth and Judith clearly was not at child-bearing age in 1776.

So probably the bride's birth year on the marriage record is incorrect. Further information would be appreciated.

The maiden name of his wife has helped me greatly with my research today.

Interestingly, I've possibly traced my Ashby side to France which means an account upgrade beckons! I'm glad I started this.

What would be the best way to trace the Winney line from present to my Great Grandmother's generation? I haven't had much luck finding any children in that family.

Re: John and dau Nancy Lamb-Native American?

John Ashby and Elizabeth Reading of Coles County had a daughter Nancy who married 1. George Lamb in Coles Co., IL Dec 24, 1828 2. Pridemore she married Sep 2, 1855. She died Aug 06, 1856. She is buried in Coles Co and will I have a pic of her tombstone up on my site soon. bear with me ... John had a slew of kids. My Ashby family is public; Nancy was a brother to my Edwin Ashby. The story of indian blood has circulated I think in every family. lol But George Lamb may have had indian in him. If there is, it might be earlier than John Ashby, Nancy's father. His dad Joseph Ashby was an orphan at age 5 in Virginia, taken care of by his aging Grandpa Joe Ashby. So far, I haven't found any indian indications but locating 5 yr old Joe's parents is proving most difficult.

Hi, Jesse Ashby (right birth/death dates & places) was my GGGGGG grandfather! My grandmother had membership in the DAR (daughters of the American Revolution), who DID recognize Jesse as serving as a private in Captain Daniel Morgan's company. He was married twice with a total of 11 children! I am descended from his daughter Sarah, from his first wife Nancy Williams. (his second wife was Tanner Ruby) My great-father, Perry Herman Ross, moved from Kentucky to Calif where we still are. He moved due to asthma from allergies.

Forwarding a request regarding the Ashby/Simmons family of Utah

I am posting this inquiry from Karen DeWees regarding Ashby/Simmons family of Utah. I do not think they are on this board so if you have pertinent info, e mail them directly. See below.

Jerry & Karen DeWees 1941dewees@windstream.net to me
show details Oct 7 (4 days ago)

I have a multitude of records from the Ashby & Simmons family. They both were Mormon families and I have many records since Ashby’s left England and Simmons left Scotland. Even about the ride over on shipboard.

Both families became members of the Mormon church and lived in or around Salt Lake City. It goes back to 1600 & 1700 on both sides of the family. I am interested because my mother was taken out of Salt Lake City after birth from mother Peal Violet Simmons and father Lawrence Ashby. She was taken by the Mizelle family and never officially adopted by them. Several years ago I found her 1/2 brother Cameron Ashby. They had same father. Lawrence Ashby’s father was Samuel and mother Cora B. Ashby. Pearl Violet Simmons did marry to a Tate, I believe and never had any other children other than Mildred Paula Simmons/Mizzelle. A great mystery in the family. Why did the Mizelle family take her and what were the circumstances involved.

Let me know if this is a possible link to the family. Karen DeWees, daughter of Mildred Paula Simmons/Mizzele

Adam, just a suggestion, you might want to join the FTDNA Ashby surname project of which I am the administer. (Family Tree DNA) www.ftdna.com We measure Y-DNA that is passed along the male line. Male Y-DNA is virtually unchanged generation after generation. We don't currently have a sample from any Ashby male in the UK. The majority of Ashby's in this country came from England and I am certain there will be numerous matches between the American & British Ashby lines. So with a few swabs of the inside of your cheek you can make a giant genetic leap across the pond. Please feel free to contact me directly using the e mail addy listed below.

Be Good,
Ernie Ashby
ernieashby@gmail.com

Seeking updates and corrections to my research below. Please keep your responses on this board for all readers to see.

1. PRESLEY7 ASHBY [Suspected Lineage (unproved): JAMES6, FIELDING5, DAVID4, THOMAS3, THOMAS "OF FREDERICK COUNTY VA"2, UNKNOWN FATHER1] was born 1814 in Oldham County, Kentucky, and died 1891 in Bullitt County, Kentucky.

I'm looking for information on Delphine Patricia and Winifred Ashby.

Delphine was born September 14 1929 in Los Angeles CA to Willard Ashby & Mabel Jackson. She made a trip to Honolulu, danced in the Nutcracker in Sparks, NV, then drops off the map. I heard she may have gone to Seattle.

Winifred was born in 1913 in Kentucky to Alonzo and Amanda Ashby. She lived with Willard & family, then dropped off the face of the earth.

Anyone having any information on where they went, I'd appreciate it.

This is a genealogy Website reserved for the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history. Genealogists start with names, dates and places – the basic information - then use oral traditions, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain yet further information about a family to demonstrate kinship of its members. The results are often displayed in charts or written as narratives.

I’m afraid a genealogy Website cannot help you identify your target(s). Simply put, you have not provided enough basic information – names, dates and places. Furthermore, your target(s) might still be living. And revealing personal information about them might very well cause legal problems for the person doing same.

Good luck finding an unnamed Ashby father (b. Abt. 1954) and unnamed mother (b. Abt. 1954) living somewhere in Illinois on October 12, 1976. On that date the unnamed mother gave birth to an unnamed female child. The child was placed for adoption at an unknown place.

Again, good luck with your quest.
Re: Corporal George Ashby, b. Greenwich. Zulu War

Info from Les Cole on Genes reunited:

George would relate how his Grandfather, John Ashby who lived in the north of London, would walk to visit his parents, Joseph & Caroline Ashby, at their Greenwich home, because he did not trust the trains. It is thought that he lived by Spitalfield market. He would also say that Joseph had a fleet of ships and used to import oranges from South Africa. He was also adamant that Joseph supplied oranges to Queen Victoria and that he had a plaque over his door to that effect. George fought in the Zulu wars of South Africa. 11 Jan 1879 British troops under Lord Chelmsford, entered Zululand 12 Jan 1879 Assault on the Kraals of Sihayo kaXango [1st Battalion, 24th Regiment of foot ] 22 Jan 1879 Battle of Nyezane [2nd Battalion, 3rd (East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs)] 22 Jan 1879 Battle of Isandlwana [1st & 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot 22/3 Jan 1879 The defence of the mission station at Rorke's Drift, Natal [2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot 11 Feb 1879 News of the battle reached London, and arrangements were made to send reinforcements without delay 12 Mar 1879 The Attack at Ntombe Drift [80th Regiment of Foot (Staffordshire Volunteers)] 28 Mar 1879 The Assault of Hlobane [90th Light Infantry (Perthshire Voluntees)] 29 Mar 1879 Zulu Assault on Woods Encampment at Khambula [90th Light Infantry] 2 Apr 1879 Battle of Gingindlovu (Eshowe Relief Colomn) [2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment] 23 jan - 3 Apr 1879 Siege of Eshowe [2nd Battalion, 3rg Regiment] 1 Jun 1879 Ambush of Prince Imperial, Ityotyozi River 3 Jul 1879 Reconnaissance across the White Mfolozi River 4 July 1879 British victory at Ulundi 28 Aug 1879 Cetshwayo captured 31 Aug 1879 Cetshwayo kaMpande, the last Zulu king went into exile on board the "Natal" which sailed for Cape Town. 12 July 1882 Cetshwayo left Cape Town on board RMS "Arab" for London. 6 Jan 1883 Cetshawayo returned to Zululand, and was reinstated as King. 8 Feb 1883 Cetshawayo died The British wanted to form a Confederation of the fragmented south African colonies and states. First to fall into the Confederation was the Boer Republic of Transvaal, annexed in April, 1877. With the acquisition of the Transvaal the British Government inherited a despute over a strip of border territory between the Boers and the fiercely independant kingdom of Zululand, ruled by King Cetshawayo. The British perceived Cetshawayo and his Zulu army as a threat to the peace of southern Africa, and thus impeding the ecconomic development of the region. Officials in southern Africa, by misrepresenting Cetshawayo and the nature of his rule, misled the British Government into supporting the invasion of the Zulu kingdom. This invasion, instead of fragmenting the Zulu kingdom as was the intention of the British Government, united the Zulu people in support of Cetshawayo. The British forces consisted of 1st & 2nd Battalion of the 24th regiment (2nd Warwickshires), and the 2nd Battalion, 3rd (East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs). The Buffs went to South Africa in 1873, took part in the Zulu wars, then went on to Singapore. and in 1882 to Hong Kong. The British met with disaster at Mount Isandlwana and Rouke's Drift. 1300 men and officers, who were left in an undefended position on Mount Isandhlwana, except for 60 white troops, were all massacred. Then, 150 British and colonial soldiers trapped at Roukes Drift, held at bay between four and five thousand Zulu wariors for twelve hours. Eleven Victoria Crosses were won in that action, the most ever awarded in a single incident. The bulk of the defenders were from B Company of the 24th regiment. On July 4th 1879 at Ulundi, the Zulu's were defeated and their king Cetshwayo kaMpande was made prisoner. David Heffernan, Unit 1, Sirius Street, Woodruffe, Palmerston, N. T. 0830 [Tel 089-323357] retains possesion of George's war medal, and has newspaper cuttings relating to George's war record, and to his medal. Jeanette E Hunt (nee Heffernan) has the Ashby family bible, Address is Mrs J E Hunt, 28 Morea Street, Osborne, 5017, Southern Australia, Australia. [Tel 2481120] George was a Corporal, serving in the Frontier Light Horse. Around the edge of his medal is inscribed "Pulleines Rangers". It appears that the Frontierr Light Horse was lead by Colonel Buller, and they saw action at Hlobane, were two soldiers were killed. Could one of these be Emma's brother? Emma Ashby's brother (name uncertain) was killed in the Zulu war in southern Africa. George befriended this brother during these campaigns, and on returning to England, looked up his family in Croyden, where he met Emma. They subsequently married on the 26 December, 1881, at the Church of All Saints, Upper Norwood. They then left England on the 2nd January, 1882, sailing on the "Drummond Castle" which was bound for Capetown, and settled in Ladysmith, South Africa for about 4 years (which was also near to the place where Emma's brother had died). They then left South Africa on board the ship "Wilimenia", which sailed from Port Natal and arrived in Australia on the 15th June, 1886. (See report in "Observer", 7th August, 1886) [See GRG 53/145 reel 2 vol 5.]. Address on arrival was c/o T D Pine, St. Vinc. St., Pt. Adel. and with employment application in S.A. PRO for S A Railways letter EO3376/86 when he gave for reference the names of Mr. A E Cooper of Natal and also the District engineer, Natal Goverment Railways. Jane died 11th Nov,.1846 and he married Caroline 3rd Jan. 1847 (quite a quick after the death of Jane.)
Notes from Les Cole (distant relation):
Joseph Ashby was received into the Marine Society on the 19 June 1805 Aded 15 years, height 4' 6", light hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion. He was discharged on the 5 August 1805 to the Alkmaar as a servant under Capt Davey. The Alkmaar was commissioned in June 1805 as a storeship at Sheerness. The Marine Soc was founded in 1756 for "poor boys of good character" for pre sea training in one of their training ships moored on the Thames off Greenhithe. Joseph served on the following ships HMS Alkmaar 4th Aug 1805 until 18th April 1807 served as a boy sailor 3rd class HMS St Albans 18th April 1807 until 30th Oct 1812 under Capt I.F.Devonshire R.N. It appears that at half-past five the deceased, who was 70 years of age, and who had been ill for a long time, was in the kitchen of his house, his wife talking to him in jocular manner. About two minutes afterwards he fell from the chair on which he was seated apparently lifeless. A alarm was raised, and Mr Pink, surgeon of Crooms Hill, who happened to be in the shop at the time, went to his assistance, and on seeing him pronounced life to be extinct. Joseph Ashby's will , proved on 27th November 1860 by Caroline Ashby, relict, who was sole executrix, and was valued at less than £200. Caroline was the sole beneficiary. George Ashby related how Josph Ashby snr, who lived in the North of London, would walk to Greenwich to visit Joseph & Caroline because he did not trust the trains. Joseph snr may have lived by Spitalfields market. (Letter from Shirley Walsh)

Hi, I'm not sure who is reading this, but I just NOW tried to look up Dave on Facebook - we dated for years back in high school and college at U of MD. We had an amicable breakup, didn't keep in touch, but I thought I'd try to look him up and say hi. I remember when his best friend(and mine), Rick, died in a boating accident, I NEVER thought Dave would die soooooo before his time. If, at all possible, can you please e-mail me at mysticgirl96@yahoo.com and let me know what happened. I am SOOO sorry for your loss, it's a loss to me too....
