I am the great great great grandson of Mary Ann Ames whose second marriage was to George Ashdown in Wellington.

I believe you are probably correct in saying (in another email of yours I have seen) that George was never formally married to Mata Pakamu Tamatuhiata. The assumption made by the researcher who compiled her biography held at the Wellington Public library is probably incorrect in saying that George predeceased her. The biographer assumes this from the fact that she later married someone else.
