Dear Carol

I am the great great great grandson of Mary Ann Ames whose second marriage was to George Ashdown in Wellington.

I believe you are probably correct in saying (in another email of yours I have seen) that George was never formally married to Mata Pakamu Tamatuhiata. The assumption made by the researcher who compiled her biography held at the Wellington Public library is probably incorrect in saying that George predeceased her. The biographer assumes this from the fact that she later married someone else.

The adventures of "Dicky" Barrett and George make for great reading. For instance, search "Dicky Barrett" "Ashdown" and "pa" on google.

regards

Andrew Kincaid
Melbourne
Australia
(b.
Thank you very much for the help. Charles was born in 1881, so he doesn't show up in these records, and I'll do some more digging for that last bit of information.

What is interesting is Margaret's Irish enthic origin - Charles' wife , Flora's mother was also Irish. For what its worth, Flora's mother was Sara Mry Cherrie born in Ireland abt 1826.

Thanks again,
Jim

That sounds like the information I'm looking for. From the 1900 US Census (Pasadena Township, Los Angeles County, CA), I found on a Margaret J. Ashdown (DoB May, 1844), living with a son, Charles L.(DoB April 1881) and daughter, Dotty M. (DoB Dec 1885). I was named after my father (James Henry) whom I believe was named after his great-uncle, James Henry Ashdown. The links I am looking for are to Margaret's husband, William, his family, who settled in Canada, from England, and Margaret's family (Raymond).
Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jim Ashdown

Re: Eliza Jane Ashdown, nee Scrace - from Kent

Hi,
I have the following:
Eliza Jane Scrace married Henry Ashdown December 25, 1880 at the Church of St James in Tunbridge, Kent. I have found the following 4 children:

Rose Ashdown, born abt Jun 1883, died abt Dec 1893.

Thomas Henry Ashdown, born abt Mar 1885, no death date found yet. My mother knew of him, but had no other information. I am assuming he died before 1950 as he was not mentioned in Eliza's obituary. He supposedly went by "Tom".

Susan Jane Ashdown, born abt Mar 1888, no death date found yet, possibly married to Archibald M K Tourle, (born abt 1879), possible daughter Norice Ivy Tourle, born abt 1909. My mother knew of Susan, her married name was told to be Sourle, and another family member thought that Eliza's maiden name was Sourle. Susan was listed in Eliza's obituary with the last name of Tourle.

James Frederick Ashdown, born abt Jun 1891, died abt Mar 1892.

Rose and James were never acknowledged as children of my great grandmother. I found that all 4 of these children had the same two parents names. This may be a co-incidence; I have not verified Rose and James.

I did find it interesting that Henry and James died the same time. I also wondered why Thomas and Susan remained in England instead of coming to the US (in 1903) with their mother after she remarried. They would have been in their mid teens. I suspected that Thomas and Susan lived with grandparents, but was not sure how to find them in the census. It surprises me that Thomas and Susan lived with the Gainsford side of my family as they would have been "step" relations. I have not yet found who Thomas married, so I would love to share information with you!

I do have more on the Scrace side; also the Gainsford side; but no more than I have listed here on the Ashdown side. I have found that Ashdown is a rather common last name, so did not want to speculate too much.

Looking forward to hearing back from you!
Karen

I know very little about this part of the family. I know about Daniel and his wife Anne and their descendents, but before that is a big blur.
Yes it could be possible, or it might not be?
I would need to know more about the dates and places of your Ashdowns to hazard a guess. Kent is rather a large county. I have ancestors that went to Australia, U.S.A. and Canada. So I would require more info on your side.
Sheila

Lauren, I think you may be my uncles wife?

Anyway, I've only recently started searching the family history and have thus learned that George was indeed born in England, but not when or quite where. He is also listed as Geuo Ashdown and I haven't been able to turn up any info at all under that name. His spouse, Elizabeth was born in Sidington, Essex, England. Though, again I don't know what year. And I've been unable to find a maiden name for her. They were listed as living in Bromley, Kent, England at one point... and according to their son's (Frank) birth records they moved to Utah sometime before 1881, but I can't find any records as to when.

I know... tons of help here! LOL Sorry, but as I said, I've only just begun.

Alonzo Edwin Ashdown of Natal, South Africa

Elizabeth Jane Cooper, daughter of William Cooper and Elizabeth nee Dunstan, married Alonzo Edwin Ashdown sometime in the 1870s, as far as I can work out. She had four children by him before they divorced in 1895. Can anyone give any information at all about this gentleman? Does he appear in your family tree? (I'm assuming his family was of British origin, as were most of the settlers in Natal, at this time.) Elizabeth Jane's older brother William McPhail Cooper, married an Alice Ashdown who is very possibly related to Alonzo.
I'd be very grateful for any leads at all!

Charles and Flora were my grandparents. They had six children; Charles, Lawrence, Mildred, James (my father), Helen and Flora.
From what I have been able to find, my grandfather's mother was Margaret (Raymond) Ashdown, wife of William Ashdown, both Canadian.
Flora's parents were Lewis Peterman and Elvira Jane (Powers) Ashdown. I am still researching that branch.
Any links on Charles are appreciated.
Regards,
Jim Ashdown
