Great !
We have a lot of work to do..........

I don't know how to pin down where he originated.....it must have been Kerry somewhere.
All we really know is that he was born in Kerry in 1849.(per RIC Records)

It's not a lot to go on , as there must have been so many Ashes, and we have no Birth Registers to help us !!!
And we don't really know that Townland he's from.
We are really only guessing at Camp........
but it's a good guess Grandfather Thomas Ashe ( Mary's Dad) knew old James Ashe, of the pub. Does she not have any info ? I suppose not.

I sent you some info that James Ashe returned from USA to look after his mother then bought/built the pub.

Richard,
We thought it might be you! It's like finding a needle in a haystack , so many Ashes.

First marriage was 11/11/1878 to Anne Mary Fitzgerald in St Munchin's Church. He was a Police Sub Constable and her father was a Police Pensioner. They must have met through the RIC.

Second marriage to Bridget Frances Geeves (Bertha). I believe it took place in Feb 1890 in Dublin. She was originally from Wicklow born c1866. I also believe that she died in Limerick in 1905.

I am going to try to send you a private message with our email address on. If you reply with your email address I can send you documents that I have. It might take a while as I have not scanned them in it.

Good luck with the searching!!

Marion

What's the date of the first marriage ?

Is it 11th Nov.1878 as per the RIC record ?
I wonder where he got married ?

I checked the Anascaul marriage records 1867 -1870.

But he probably married in Limerick, in 1878, that's where Anne Fitzgerald must have been from.
And he was stationed in Limerick in 1879.....which was the date he joined up the RIC.

J

Thanks so much for your link to all those Ashes. I'm bamboozled by the number od descendants !

But i'm afraid that i'm stuck with the RIC man , Michael Ashe,my great grand father, born in 1849 ( per RIC records). i can't seem to get beyond that .
It was very kind of you to give me that link , thank you.
It seems Michael Ashe married 11 Nov.1878; as per the RIC records.

He married a second time on 11 Feb. 1890.
I understand he married a woman called "Bertha" in the second marriage.

see this post which expressly refers to the ashe Pub in Camp :
hanafin family genealogy brosnan & ashe.

James Ashe returned from America, because of his ill mother. His father would not allow him to go back to the USA and gave him land in Camp where he built a pub.

Here is the full text of the entry:

March 11, 2000 at 4:00 pm #209

archives

Hi Dave. I just saw your post on GenForum and am replying here mainly because it gets too confusing to remember where the last message got left, and believe me, researching these families is confusing enough without adding to it!

Here’s some of what I know so far. I’m waiting for information from my parents, which may expand on what I have.

My mother is Mary Theresa ASHE Codd; sibs: Michael, 2 girls (died v. young – I’m not sure of their names), Patrick, Siobhan (died young), Carmel.

Her parents were James ASHE and Christina BROSNAN;

James’ parents were Michael ASHE and Julia MANNIX. His sibs were Mary, John, Bridget, Michael, Margaret (Greta), and Patrick.

Christina’s parents were James BROSNAN and Ellen FLAHERTY. Sibs: Tadhg (Timothy), Margaret (Maggie), Catharine (Kate), Johanna, Hannah, Ellen, Michael, and Mary.
Grandma was the youngest; she was orphaned young. Michael was married to Mamie SHEEHY. I’ll have more on this group soon.

Michael ASHE had one full sister, Margaret. There was a 3rd sibling, but I’m not sure where he/she falls. Their parents were James ASHE and Mary DEANE of Curragh (Mary (1)). It gets a little complicated here, because Michael and Margaret were born somewhere in NY State, but the family returned to Ireland when their mother became ill. She died sometime after they returned. James planned on returned to the US, but his father, also James, wouldn’t let him because of the children, and gave him land in Camp where he built a pub. It’s still there. Here’s the complicated part. James (my gggrandfather) married a second time to a woman named GRIFFIN. I don’t know her first name yet, or anything else about her. She died roughly a year after they were married; no issue. James then married a 3rd time, to Mary DEANE of Upper Camp (Mary (2)). James and Mary (2) had a large family: Mary (m. Patrick GRIFFIN and emigrated to New Zealand), James (inherited the pub, m. Julia O’BRIEN), Patrick (aka Patsy or Pointy), John, Tom, Johanna and Bridget and Greg. Greg emigrated to Chicago. The only thing I know for sure about the age order is that Mary was the eldest and Greg the youngest.

Now for more twists. My ggreat-aunt Maggie ASHE married twice. The first time to John DEANE (ch Mary, Bridget, Ellen and John), then John O’KANE. John DEANE was a brother of Mary (2), thus making Mary, Bridget, Ellen and John both first cousins AND aunts/uncle of their mother’s half-siblings!

Patrick GRIFFIN who married Mary ASHE (James & Mary (2)) was a nephew of Kate GRIFFIN, who married another of Mary DEANE (2)’s brothers!

It goes downhill from there. I still get headaches trying to figure it out, and I have a printed tree! I only hope the Brosnans are not as tricky.

Anyway, the whole point is that right now, the only link I have to the Gregory Peck/Tomas Ashe line is by marriage only, and at that, it’s not through any Ashe relatives save my grandfather! However, given the convolutions of the tree (only touched on above!) and the small size of the Dingle Peninsula, I imagine there has to be a connection, which I’m determined to find.

I have seen the tree you mentioned, and I e-mailed Mr. Ashe, but got no response. But I’m still working on it – I have a long way to go before I consider this tree complete!

now whether any of the above is connected with the Ashes of the High road , Thomondgate, and the Michael ashe of that address and subsequently Thomas Ashe of the same address is beyond me.
JFT.

Marion, Interesting ! yes , I am looking for the records of Thomas Ashe, father Michael Ashe. I got his RIC record originally from the Public Record Office , Kew.,London. Then recently I got the RIC record from the Garda Museum in Dublin. it just gives the same information.
My problem is finding where he was from. I was looking for the first wife's marriage cert,.... but you have it and it doesn't give a location. I suspect it must be from around Camp...as he knew Jamsie Ashe, owner of the pub there.
The family is listed in the 1901 and 1911 census records. At least that gives all his children.....but again doesn't give a location where he came from.
I will try to do some on the spot research in Tralee soon.
Richard, son of Richard........(and The Ashes) of the High road !!!!!

I have just joined this site. It appears that we are both trying to do the same research. I have just made contact with someone who has Thomas Ashe, your grandfather on his family tree. I am waiting for more information from him. Let me know if you want to share info. Having read your query, I take it that you got Michael Ashe's RIC record from Belfast. I have a copy of his marriage cert (1st marriage - Anne Fitzgerald). It only gives his father as Thomas Ashe (farmer) but does not say from where. I think I'll have to take a trip to Kerry during the summer to look at the church records.
Marion (Niall's wife)

Anyone have information on Gregory Peck's Great Aunt, Mary Ashe, who was married to Jack, (possibly with surname Curran) who was a farmer about 6 miles east of Dingle? Mary Curran was married to my Great Grand Uncle, John Kelliher, b. 25 Jun 1855, in Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland. According to family notes, Mary Curran had an Uncle Jack, who was married to Mary Ashe, Gregory Peck's Grand Aunt.

Hi David,

Yes, this is all part of my tree.
My grandmother, Kate (Ashe) Brosnan passed away on May 17, 1997, however (not 1977).

The dates that her parents (Matt & Mag) passed away, I never knew. I knew they died in the 1940s, but never knew the exact dates. How did you get this information?

I recently learned that Matt’s sister Mary Ashe (born about 1855) was married to Timothy Keane (from Acres), and died in Springfield, Mass October 17, 1946. They were married February 07, 1875 in Holyoke, Mass. Timothy Keane died sometime before 1901.

Matt’s sister Joan Ashe was married to a Meaney (from Claire).

I did not know at all about Hanora and Margaret. They must have died very young..

Would you know if there would be any records available that would be give me more information on Bridget Healy? I’m wondering who Bridget’s father was and also when she died? I know Bridget’s mother was a Rita Hickson.

I have Ashe on my grandfather’s side of the family also. My grandfather, Tadgh Brosnan was the son of Patrick Brosnan (1877-1957), of Minard West, and Johanna Ashe (1875-1956) of Doonties, Kinard. Johanna’s parents were Greg Ashe (Kinard) and Mary Griffin (Greenfields?). I have additional information on Greg Ashe, but no more on Mary Griffin, unfortunately.

I believe I may have corresponded with you several years ago, and I believe we are 4th cousins.

Thanks,

Brian
Linda, Donal died suddenly in December 2000. I'm sorry you didn't hear. He's buried in Rath Cemetery in Tralee. I was still in California at the time. One of the last messages I got was an invitation to a steak dinner at Ashe's Pub in Camp, which is run by a cousin of mine. I live in Tralee now, and one of these days I'm going to go out there and order him a steak. Don't know what Tom will make of it - I don't eat steak!

Edel

Got the information. These words filled in blanks on the original typed form. It was a Declaration of Intention meaning formal citizenship had not yet been achieved, the process was beginning.

Michael ASHE, 30y, a Laborer, white with a fair complexion, 5'6" tall, 140 pounds weight, dark brown hair and grey eyes having no visible marks [tatoos, scars, etc]. He was born Dingle Ireland on 17 Feb, 1881 and currently lived 3536 Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis Missouri. He left Queenstown Ireland aboard the CARONIA and last resided Dingle, Ireland. He renounced King George V of whom he was a subject and arrived into the port of New York on 1 June, 1911. This document was signed 7 June, 1911. Write to me at nutmeg@bartnet.net if you wish a JPG of this document. MegG near Tulsa, OK

I just saw your message from 2006 about Missouri Naturalization Declaration of Intentions for MICHAEL ASHE (b. Dingle 17 Feb 1881), # 6139, page 439. I have this person in my family tree. I suppose the film has been sent back. However, if you happened to copy the information down and can easily retrieve that, I'd appreciate the info. Otherwise thanks, I can get the film myself!

Suzanne in Oregon

I am helping my Aunt Frances Lake Leedy McKinney to find info on a William Kooles of Aseville NC. He owned or operated a Bar B Q Inc. in Aseville. She had a son there named: Russell Stephen McKinney. Born at St Josephs Hosp. on Oct 12, 1950. Did his father raise him? She does not know who raised him. He would be my cousin.

Hi Peter Thanks for that, but i have the marriage certificate for Samuel & Mary's marriage now. would be interested to find any other Ashe's though I think Sam's dad was also Samuel & Mary's dad was James Ferguson.
My late husband came from Creagah & i have managed to trace his ancestors back to 1460 but am finding it a little more difficult on me mummy's side. I lost all the data i had inputted with Ancestry cos i didn't re register when they changed it around!!!! infuriating but addictive eh? Regards Laurine

I am looking for information on my paternal grandfather James Curtis Ashe. I believe he was born in Maine around 1920. He served in the USAR during WWII. he married a Marie Flynn and has a son Brian Sean Ashe. Brian was my father. All the above mentioned folks are deceased. Any information would be helpful.
