Jean - thanks for your swift reply. The e-mail address that my parents took down was not a correct e-mail address - a combination of their old age and deafness caused the problem!

Contacting them again would only produce the same result and you are right to say putting such information on as open a forum as this is unwise.

As our families seemed to branch away from each other about 100 years ago, and your research seems to have gone further back than mine, what information could you want from me that would be helpful to you?

Best wishes

David

Hello David

No mistake about the glassblower, I'm afraid. His name was Thomas, and deserted his wife, Nancy, and died in the workhouse. I am aware that they were all wire drawers, apart from him. He was before James and Ann.

Yes, my grandmother was Henry's sister. I did find out information about him. I believe nobody in your family knew about my grandmother either. I did speak with your father and aunt, and asked them to give you my e-mail address. Did they do that? It is far less public than this forum.

Jean

Are you the person who phoned my father and Aunt from Canada recently?

I am Henry Ashton's grandson. He was born on 19th December 1889 and died on 6th February 1929 when my father was six years old.

I have searched census forms and have traced the Ashtons back to James and Ann who were Thomas's parents. All the men seem to be wire drawers. I think your 'glass blower' is a case of poor handwriting on the census form and he was another wire drawer.

Best wishes

David Ashton

Ashton's of Maidenhead, Berkshire

Hi,

My grandfather's name was William George Ashton and he was born in Maidenhead on 23rd July 1926. He passed away in July 1989 age 63. I have been unable to find a record of his birth, which leads me to believe the name he used during his life, was not the one he was given at birth.

I know that he had a brother called Frank and two sisters called Violet and Eileen. I have found which I think relate to the two sisters and a record relating to a George William Ashton. All three seem to have the same mother, but I am stuck as to how to tie them together and would really welcome any help/suggestions.

Many Thanks,

Aaron
I am also looking for any connections at all to this family, especially to two more recent descendants, Henry (1892)and Ann (1886), born to Thomas (1861) and Elizabeth Parr) (1860). All born and lived in Warrington. Thomas (1861) was a wire drawer. I do not know the dates of death for Henry and Ann and I am looking for their descendants. I do not know if Ann married. She died in the late 50s or early 60s.

I am also looking for my great great great grandfather, Thomas, who was married to Nancy (nee Kay). I believe he may have deserted her and died either in England or he left the country. They lived in Warrington, and he was a glass maker in 1826.

Hi Marty
You could start by asking more questions of your mum like birth town, family members etc. Even the smallest clue can get you somewhere sometimes then maybe search census lists, electoral rolls etc. Would be easier if you had an exact place of bith then you could search the birth data bases
Not much but I hope this helps
Karen - Perth, Australia

Your best bet is to look for Cornish settlements in Ohio, and not Baptist. There was a Cornish settlement in Akron. Oh with Carkeets as residents at one point. It is also an industrial town.

Yeah, that's what I do. Look at the others affiliated with the family who had Ohio associations. My grandpa's family was from a specific town in Switzerland. The others that came from that same town migrated together for the nxt 200+ years. Check other names living next your relatives who were associated and you could find some clues. Good luck.

Does anyone have any information about George Ivan Ashton born about 1910/1911 unknown location but married in Sydney in 1931, had 2 children in 1932 & 1935 then he went to Tasmania as he shows on the Hobart Electrol Rolls for Denison in 1936, remarried in Tasmania & had 2 daughters, he died in August 1970, somewhere between 1936-1970 he was knighted (Sir)(unknown what for). He was also the FOUNDER of Ashton's Toy Shop in Elizabeth St, Hobart in the 1950's which later became Ashtons-Toyworld in Victoria St, later this was just Toyworld. He may have been a President of a Hobart Yacht Club. He lived in Sandy Bay.. Hope someone out there can fill in the gaps. Sue

I am interested in finding any persons who has knowledge of the above union. One George Henry Ashton married Maria Hilda Muller. All I known is that George Henry was supposedly a POW in WW1. When not sure. I also know that there were an uncle (mine) in Germany call Bruno and a cousin called Hans. I saw them once in the 1960's just before the wall was erected. I think that they lived in the Eastern Sector of Berlin

Don't know if this is your George but am related to a George Henry ASHTON born 1873 Brant, Devonshire, ENG s/o John & Mary Ann (HOUGHTON) ASHTON. He would have been around 41 by 1914. Do not know who he married and have very little on his siblings other then they were; an unknown female child, Victor Charles, William John and Mary Ann.

His father, John, was the s/o William & Margaret (DENDLE) AHSTON from Barnstaple area of DEV, town of Pilton.

...don

This one, the only way I know he was born in Ohio was from two of Adams Co. MS census. His family migraged from Cornwall, had this child in Ohio, (child was Henry Carkeet born 1833) and then went on to Natchez MS.

Going back to 1833 is goes a long ways back. I have a Grant Co. WI Birth Record, earliest to 1891, compiled by David W. Taft, it's an index, and to find one in the 1830s is next to impossible. Henry's paretns were Baptist would this help in knowing where they were, and do you know if the Baptist have early Ohio records archived somewhere?

...don

Thanks, will see what I can find.

I have been told it is a strange surname and off hand only know of two there, Henry's family and a Corbin Coby Carkeet Fox family. I know where the Fox family fits in but also think there are more surnames from Natchez MS, that came from same part of Ohio.

Great to hear from you. I'd love to share info. How far back have you traced the family? Please contact me directly at legmdavis@aol.com
Here's a few tidbits about your Charles:

Apparently lived with Isaac Newton Ashton, and gave him the revolver he used to kill himself in 1882.
----
Wheeling Sunday Register, 31 Jan 1886, page 1:
Charles Ashton has received his commission for the postmastership at Oro post office, on the Mt. Pleasant pike between here and the above named town.
----
Wheeling Register, 12 May 1891:
Chas Ashton and family, living near this city, are seriously ill.
----
Wheeling Sunday Register, 12 Jul 1891:
The many friends of Chas. Ashton will be sorry to learn that he is seriously ill with typhoid fever with no hopes of recovery.
----
Wheeling Register, 14 July 1891:
Martins Ferry
Charles Ashton, who died at the home of his father in West Virginia last Saturday evening, was buried yesterday afternoon at Weeks' Cemetery. He was a member of Ohio City Lodge, No. 54, K. of P., this city, and the Jr. O.U.A.M. The funeral was in charge of the K. of P., who met the remains at the ferry and followed the remains to his late home and thence to the cemetery. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss. He was a steady, moral young man, and his family has the sympathy of the community.
