Hello again Carol,

Further to previous message, I have been through my "stuff" again and can confirm that in the parish records, the father of the 1809 Robert Wilson Askew, is James Askew of Bouth, but I believe that this is the father of 1791 James. I think I may have sent you the names of the other children that I think would be Rbt Wilson's siblings, but as yet cannot validate this. The earliest of these is William, 1787 and the latest Rbt Wilson. Cant prove it, just feel it. (Not very scientific, I know, but I really do)

Gill
Hello again Carol,

The search continues but I have the following info. I did find Robert Wilson Askew in the Colton parish records, born early 1809 and died later that year. As yet, dont know parents. A Robert Wilson Askew is, as you say, the youngest son of James and Mary. Also, Robert and Mary Corr had a son, Robert Wilson Askew, born in 1884, who died in 1889 of meningitis (I have both certificates). There is also a Robert Wilson Askew from Colton, born in 1895, who I believe is also Robert & Mary's son, but no verification at present.

I am in touch with another lady who is researchig the family and between us we believe we might have the answer to the mystery of James Askew. However, at present it is totally conjecture. He is not to be found in any parish record in the Colton area, Broughton, Ireleth, Aldingham, Ulverston, Lowick, Dalton etc. Therefore we are considering the possibility that he was either orphaned or illegitimate, and then adopted by another family member. This seems the only logical answer. If we find anything further I will let you know.

Nice to hear from you again.
Regards,
Gill

Thank you Martin for that info - I will have to see where it fits in with mine. If you have any questions I can answer don't hesitate to ask.

At the moment I want to answer a question of Gill's. Gill you are mentioning a Robert Wilson Askew born in 1809 (I think - the thread isn't in from of me). The Robert Wilson Askew I have is the youngest child of James Askew and Mary Hughs, was born in 1840 in Colton and I found a wife for him - Mary Corr . That's from the Pedigree Resource File on Family Search.org

There is another solution. The father is James Askew and the censuses differ in his date of birth. The earliest ones put him as being born in 1795-6 but a later one says 1791-2. If the later one is correct then it would be possible for him to have a son in 1809 (tho he didn't marry till 1817??)but it would be possible. I have found it often in these large families that when a child didn't survive very long, the name would be reused, especially if it had meaning to the parents, which I would think would be the case here. For us coming along later that can be very disconcerting! I don't know if this is correct - at this point it is supposition. I was rereading the thread and picked up on the date of birth (1809). If you have any confirming info, please let me know - it sounds as if you have.

I've done it again - up way too late and have to work in the morning, so have to stop here. All the best! Carol

Hi Gill!

First off - no need to feel presumptuous - you aren't. Anyone who is interested in this stuff is by nature interested in anyone else who is interested in it and you will find them the most sharing lot of people you could hope to run into.

You are in a unique position (each of us is) and as such either know some things others don't and therefore has something to contribute - or has questions that others can perhaps answer - so they should be asked!

To your question: I have Elizabeth Askew as the third child of James and Mary. I have found a christening date for her in the IGI: 15 Aug 1824 in Colton. I don't have it in front of me now, but that would list the parents, so I think it's correct. She is also on the lists of siblings - at least some of them (again, I haven't looked just now)on Ancestry.

In my notes I have her as born July 1824 in Ulverston whereas many of the Ancestry trees will say 1825. That's what I told you about before - this info is probably originally from a Census. The July could be from the Free BMD Index.

I have to quit now to go to work - but will look it up with sources as soon as I can and get back to you.

I did find your earlier reply afterward - thanks for that. I'll respond properly to that later as well. Thanks!

Maybe I misspelled my email address - (I was in a hurry)so here it is again:

lorenzfamily@hotmail.com

All the best - Carol (another of the many cousins!!)

Hello Carol,
Nice to hear from you. After I first posted a message I started to think about it and wondered if I was being a bit presumptuous - you have obviously been doing this for much longer than me. I have got a lot of my info from censuses but also the parish records of Colton church - and Yes, Julie Hudson and I have been in touch but also with her, I feel a bit presumptuous. You both have put in so much effort and have so much knowledge that it seems a bit of a cheek for me to but in. But anyway - here goes.

James Askew was my great great grandfather, his son George (Christopher's twin) was James, my maternal grandfather.

To be honest when I started this research I was just bumbling around in various censuses and IGI etc., having completed only a 6 week course at the library. I could type but was also new to computers so you can imagine!

I believe Mary Hughs is the correct spelling because I have found a wedding in the parish records at Colton of an Alice Askew and John Casson, with the witnesses being John HUGHS, (? Mary's father or brother), Sarah Askew, James Askew, Thomas Askew and Betty Askew. Trouble is I cannot sort out those other than James. I can find lots of Askews with father James between 1787 and 1809 - but no way of finding out which James and where everyone fits in.

I also had James & Mary's marriage as being at Hawkshead but probably in the early days I just took it as being true from something I found (see how pathetic I am - Im more careful these days.) Ive tried everywhere I can think of including Coniston, where she was born.

I also wondered about Godman Askew but couldnt figure it out so ignored it.

I like James Askew and Elizabeth Wilson for our James' parents but if Julie cant verify it what chance do I have?!grandfather.

One thing of interest you my like to know is that my husband and I visited Haverthwaite churchyard where my other grandfather James Huckerby is buried and found the grave of George and Alice - and also buried with them were "their children" Christopher, Hannah. , Alice, Isabel and Bessie so I presume this means these girls did not marry. However, I do not have them down as having a child called Christopher so thats a mystery to me.

So as you can see Carol, I dont really have any info that you dont, I have followed James' children, their marriages and grandchildren etc. but you probably have these.

However thanks for your email address and in the unlikely event of me finding something new, I will be in touch. It is lovely (and to me, surprising, ) that other people are involved in tracking this family too.

Regards,
Gill

PS I do have photos of George and James his son if you are interested.

The reason I believe Hughs is correct is tha, James Askew (? probably "our" James), Thomas Askew,Betty Askew and John HUGHS - ? Mary's father or brother.

However, although I have lots of Askews

Hi Julia!

I don't know if you'll see this but in case: If you look into the 1841 Census you'll find "Gorge" and Christopher as the 7th and 8th children of James Askew and Mary Hughs. George (I assume that would be the correct spelling)would be my great great grandfather. In several subsequent censuses I have noticed that one stayed at home for quite a while and the other left home quite soon - so does not show up in later censuses.

All the best!
Hi Gill!

I'm back - and also have some questions for you as well.

I go back to James Askew and Mary Hughs as well, and am more than willing to share what I have found. Some I have found together with Julie Hudson - we have figured out that we are second cousins. She has mentioned a "Gill" several times, in connection with James Askew if I remember correctly. Would that be you? (Plausible, you have to admit!)

To establish the connection: This James and Mary are the parents of (among others) twins named George and Christopher Askew. I have a DOB for them as 6 Dec 1838 in Colton. They show up in various family trees on Ancestry and interestingly, one of them had this date for Christopher and was guessing at a close date for George - not knowing they were twins. This you can find in the "Weetman Family Tree" on Ancestry. That tree is owned by an "ian760" - and I would guess that he is descended from Christopher since he had the exact date - or he found it another way. I haven't asked him yet.

If you go into the 1841 Census they are both listed as being 1 yr old and the Census taker put a bracket around their names, which could have been his way of saying they were twins and thus the same age. (Twins run in the family)

Ages in a census are apt to be off by a year. I had a case where I knew the exact birthdate of a great great grandfather (it was in 1864) and I was at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and the person there told me that it would show in the Census as 1865 - and it did. I have encountered this many times since in a Census where the person's age is listed as opposed to date of birth.

This George married Alice Steel (and his twin nmarried her sister - Agnes Margaret Steel)and their eldest daughter, Mary Ann Askew, is my great grandmother.

I first found James Askew as married to Mary Hughs - the way you spell it, and have wondered if it was really "Hughes" and was misspelled, or if it was truly spelled "Hughs". Since I wasn't sure I have so far listed her as "Hughs or Hughes". Do you have any family (or other)records going back that far that would be definitive in answering that question?

There is a James Godman Askew that pops up in several of the family trees and I had initially adopted the "Godman" till I looked into it some more. This also in conjunction with Julie - we are both now of the opinion that James Godman Askew is not "our" James Askew, so I have removed it from my family tree on Ancestry. I think I was able to find his parents and they had first names that have not recurred at all (This was a while ago - but one was Roger and we have no other Rogers)It seems to have been quite the thing for the parents' names to be handed down. I know it is only circumstantial, but the rest of the data also seem to fit.

Someone on Ancestry has the place of their marriage as Hawkeshead, Lancashire on 27 April 1817. I know Julie has gone to the original records and can find no record of it's having been in Hawkeshead - and I can't find it online either. I do find an extracted record on Family Search.org that spells her name Hughs, and lists the date as 27 Apr 1817 and lists the place as ,Lancashire, England. I tend to trust extracted records (as far as there hasn't been a transcription error - and I have found some) since they are entering info from original sources.

Julie found a marriage for a James Askew and Elizabeth Wilson (I'll have to look up her email for the specifics)who could be the parents of the James who married Mary Hughs. It also seems to fit - on similar grounds. We have nothing solid to go on, BUT James and Mary's first daughter was an Elizabeth and the youngest son was Robert Wilson Askew. Again circumstantial.....but it does seem a possibility. I just don't know how to go about verifying it.

So who are you descended from - from all the many Askews??

Where can I be of help to you??

Here is my email address in case you don't want to stick to the message board. (They do have their uses tho - so keep an eye on it as well.)

lorenzfamily@hotmail.com

Take care! Hope this isn't overwhelming (there is SO much more....)

All the best, Carol

ello Carol -

I only began family research 7 months ago and have only today found message boards. However, my great great grandfather was James Askew who was married to Mary Hughs. I now have quite a lot of info on the family (although not as much as I would like) - it may not be anything new to you but I am happy to share it. Could you contact me with any queries, and perhaps you may be able to help me.
Regards. Gill

I did not know that George Askew's father was Seth Askew. Anyway he married Sarah Jenkins the daughter of Charles Jenkins born ca 1791 son of Winborn Jenkins Jr and Susannah Benthall. This Winborn Jenkins Jr. received pay vouchers during the American Revolution in 1780's. I joined the SAR on him. I have that George and Sarah Askew had at least 4 children George E., Celia E., Mary C., and Andrew J. Askew.
I am interested in which area of Hertford Co., NC they came from. Charles Jenkins sister Mary married John H. Askew in 1814. I do not know who he is related to.

Hi skl ----

The book by Alice Ann Askew is a real problem because the author is now deceased and the book is "out of print." Why people spend decades researching and writing good genealogy books and then not providing for them to be republished when needed or reprinted after death is a complete mystery to me. The copyright apparently resides with the departed’s family, and they have not released it to the public domain.

My Askews were in the same county in early Georgia as were the descendants of Josiah Askew (1740-1818) of Edgecombe, NC. Some of my kin believe that we are descended from him, but my on-site research in Hancock/Morgan GA points to our instead being descendants of Casey Askew of Virginia. To distinguish between the two families, however, I have had to do extensive research on the five sons of Josiah/Edgecombe (James, John, Uriah, Josiah, and William Sanford) who were all in Hancock, GA at one time or another.

To assist myself, I have been trying to get a copy of the Alice Askew book for the past four years now and so far have only been able to find short excerpts and/or have second hand quotations read to me from kind helpers. In spite of not having the book, I have, however, managed to piece together a pretty good accounting of the Josiah/Edgecombe clan.. and particularly that of your line Josiah Askew (1779-1844).

I believe that you may be able to locate the nearest public library that has a copy of the Alice Ann Askew book (they are few and far between!) by using the following book location website:

http://www.worldcat.org/advancedsearch

The closest copies to me, as I recall, are in Macon and Atlanta, GA.

If you would like information about your Askew line, I would be willing to exchange information.

regards,

robert holley
miami, FL

Hi Julie - again -

All the Askews who married seemed to have a lot of children and used the same lot of names, and one of the favorites was Christopher, along with George and James and etc. That means you will have a lot of them in the same area at the same time. I have run into a similar problem with my Dad's line in Scotland and have found that the only way I can pick them apart is by the wives names - if you(I) can find them! I know there are other Christophers out there besides the one I told you of.

Carol

Hi Julie

I think I am working on the same family as you are. In the 1841 British Census there is a Christopher and a George Askew - both 4 years old at that time. The census taker put a bracket around their ages as they were the same, so I think they are twins (runs in the family) Christopher goes on to marry Margaret Agnes Steel (b abt 1831 in Colton) and George marries her sister, Alice Steel (b abt 1839 also in Colton). They both had a daughter Mary Ann and the Mary Ann who is the daughter of George Askew is my great great grandmother.

In the Census of 1841 their parents are listed as James Askew, 45 at the time, and Mary age 40. I believe Mary is Mary Hughes.

I have just put together the children of George and Alice and haven't gotten back to his father's siblings yet.

A family tree on Ancestry lists the children of James and Mary Askew - source: the Census of 1851 - I have the names noted but not the ages. If you can go onto Ancestry do a search for George or Christopher and it should pull up the "Honeywill Family Tree" - it lists them. I can also get back to you when I get that far - but that won't be today.

James Askew b 1791 Colton
m. 27 Apr 1817 Lancashire
d.1876 Lancashire
Mary Hughes b. abt 1801 Lancashire
d. Mar 1876 Lancashire

Happy Hunting!

Carol

I am in possession of a bank check written to Seth G. Askew in 1927, by my great-grandfather, George Cherry Parker. It was written on Farmers-Atlantic Bank of Murfreesboro, NC. Seth Askew signed the back of it, where there were two stamps -- The Peoples Bank and Bank of Conway. W. J. Wilson also signed the back of the check. This check was written "for house rent." I found Seth G. Askew, farmer, along with wife, Annie L. in the Kirby Township of Northampton Co. on the 1920 census. Two doors down was William J. Wilson and wife, Jennie. Wilson was "overseer of a farm." On a map, Kirby is between Conway and Murfreesboro. My ggfather was working in the little hamlet of Milwaukee, and traveling back and forth from his home in Norfolk, Virginia (in his 1924 Model T. Ford.) He was renting a room or a house from Seth G. Askew, in May of 1927. He was a carpenter and woodman, by trade. I'm hoping your Seth Askew was my check recipient's father, or at least a close family member. I'm hoping you see this query since you wrote yours 9 years ago. And I hope you will reply. Thanks!

Hmm, I don't really remember. I do know that my line of the Askew family traces their lines to her. But I may have been told wrong, my family does tend to get things mixed up.

Try searching through mine. As far as names go, the oldest one I can remember is Theron Hugh Askew. He's my great-grandfather. I'm not sure about where he was born. I believe the year of death is 1988 because I know he died a few months after I was born.

I'm trying to find links between my own Askew Family tree which originates in England (Suffolk, London and the Askew's in America.)

Specifically:

When did the Askew's come to America? Who were they? Where did they come from?

Mike

I'm researching my Askew line and have found reference to this book by Alice Ann Askew (Josiah Askew of Edgecombe Co. NC). Josiah Askew (1776-1844) born in NC, died in Georgia is said to be discussed in this book on pages 51-59. Does anyone have information about where I can find the book?

my Askew line:
Nicholas Askew 1660-1728, m Sarah Oglethorpe
John Askew 1695-1751, m Margaret Boone
Josiah Askew 1740-1818, m unk and then Constance Mercer
Josiah Askew 1776-1844, m Nancy Jernigan
Henry Jernigan Askew 1814-1905, m Eleanor Maddox and then Martha Maddox

Any information about the book or the line would be greatly appreciated.

skl
california
